Varsity lands a fifth place in league standing With players like Glenn Becker, Ted Flournoy, Leroy Jackson, Glenn Weaver, and Joe Warnell, it's a Wonder that Thornton's Varsity football season Wasn't more successful. The squads came through with a 5-4 record to finish the season in fifth place in the South Suburban League. The Bloom game highlighted the season as the Wildcats, led by mighty Joe Wal'HCll, trounced the Trojans, 27-21. All the players named above made the SSL All-Star team. Ted Flournoy Was named most valuable player. Coaching the varsity were T. B. l-luddlestun and Bob Blaha. Seven juniors deserving of recognition were Bill Doster, Barney Eilers, Morris Johnson, Dave Kolton, Burton Patrick, and Jim Swiatek. Wilalkits, trained by Joe Keane and Barney Benedetto, finished the season with a 5-3-1 record. The team scored a total of 199 points. Thornton shut out Thornridge, 4-2-0, Bloom, 32-Og and KKK, 33-Og but lost to Blue Island, 6-0. At homecoming, Lockport and Thornton tied at 111-- 14-. Leading TTHS to a 5-3-1 record were Vernis Mims, Jim Capolillo, Robert Jackson, James Grant, Robert Covert, and Jack White. 108

VARSITY. Ted Flournoy, 26, cuts to the right to avoid Waukegan tackler while I oe Warnell throws a key block on l1is opponent. Thornton's freshman team had a dismal season, Winning only one game, losing five. After bowing to Kankakee, 21-12, and to hard-playing Joliet, 20-O, Thornton dropped its third league encounter in a row to Thornridge, 12-0. Thorntonis mighty little team fought back hard to clobber Argo, 27-0, only to be beaten by Blue Island, 14-6, and Lockport, 18-12. ln spite of the season record, coaches Ted Czech and Dick Bruno considered the entire squad of sixty-three as having a terrific amount of potential. Outstanding players of the season were co-captains Pat Brewer and -Lewis Swanson, halfback Greg Pardee, guard Bob Swietlik, and end Wally Olczak. Thornton's junior varsity football team blanked Joliet, 20-Og beat Argo, 48-195 and lost to Kankakee, 13-7, for an overall mark of 2-1. Frank Bauman and Bill Purden coached. SOPHOMORES. Mike Leake, 33, makes a block on Waukegan as ,lim Capolillo, 23, is ready to help his teammate.
