5106666 Coffffecizbn and General! fczmce General Science-Eugene Baringer, Arnold Grzybowski, and Virginia Denzy get new concepts of the world in the Space Age from lvliss Rio's class. They helped plan exhibit. This year a course has been devised for students with speech problems stemming from nervous conditions, emotional upsets, and physical disturbances. Individual work was done in classes of three or four. Each student was given a program of study devel- oped by a certified state therapist. Numerous students worked on projects which were entered in the district meet of the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Faire others were selected to be on exhibit at Thornton's annual Science Exhibit on April ll.

Language! were balk beard and fem Latin-Sonia Espen, john Lvrla, Susan Blessing explain a Roman aquecluct for the benefit of an advanced class. Todayis language students are encouraged to take third or fourth year courses to give them fluency in speaking and reading. In be- ginning courses, teachers stressed conversation more this year than they ever did before. Tape recorders were added to language class procedures to help students to hear their own mistakes and those of others. Using the jack box for listening to tapes, six students at a time, was also something new. Thorntonis curriculum offers three modern languages-French, German, Spanishgplus the basic language, Latin. 26
