He has served the Board faithfully for 36 years. Mr. A. H. McDougall, a consult- ing engineer, has been on the Board for 35 years. Mr. McDougall is a former vice-president of the Whiting Corporation. Mr. Walter Haines, Thornton Township Collector, was elected in l942. Mr. Edward R. Waterman of South Holland, a farmer and bank- er, has served since 194-2. Mr. Frank P. Last September, Dr. Clifford R. Maddox, former superintendent of instruction and freshman class prin- cipal, was selected by the Board of Education to succeed Dr. William McVey as Thornton's acting super- intendent. In 1926 Dr. Maddox came to Thornton as an instructor. Two years later he was appointed fresh- man class principal and superintend- ent of instruction. Dr. Maddox received his BS. de- gree from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, in 1916. ln 1925 he received his M.A. degree and in 1933 his Ph.D., both from the University of Chicago. Mr. Joseph B. Stephens is acting assistant superintendent and also business manager of Thornton Town- ship High School. He came to Thornton in 1924 as a physics in- structor and has been a class prin- cipal for all but his first year. Mr. Stephens is now completing his PH.D. in Education at the Uni- versity of Chicago, where he received his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees.
