WI 1 H in Page 24 mfg E ed Ahhhhh! Delicious scents greet you as you pass the homemaking department, and assure you that the girls are prepar- ing elegant morsels of food. So, it makes you hungry? Maybe you'1l be one of the lucky people to be invited to a dinner, and watch neatly clad girls serve the meals which they themselves have prepared. The cooking classes prepare and give teas for various organizations through- out the year. The Homemaking Apart- ment serves as a very suitable back- ground for these occasions. Re-styling and making simple and then more complex garments is the work of the students in the sewing classes. Each year the sewing classes present a tea, at which the girls model garments which they have made. The mothers are the special guests. Miss VVilma Reed is at the head of the Homemaking Department. o f 0 mea 9111190 ? ,. X Today, as never before, the young people of America realize the many benefits to be gained from the knowledge of a foreign language. As the nations of Europe can now be reached in a few hours by airplane, many Thornton stu- dents are likely to realize their dreams of traveling to foreign countries. Courses in French, Spanish, and Ger- man offer the student an excellent oppor- tunity, not only to learn to read and write the language, but to speak it as well. Even after one year's study, boys and girls taking the same language are able to carry on simple conversations among themselves. Latin, the fourth language course offered at Thornton, provides the stu- dent with a basic knowledge of our own language, since English is largely de- rived from it. Although it is almost impossible to speak Latin, persons per- suing the study of it find it very inter- esting and helpful to them in their other subjects. The language department, under the direction of Miss Mildred E. Anderson, is doing much to contribute to the in- creasing interest of Thorntonites in foreign affairs. With the United Nations organization and the good neighbor policy in full swing, people everywhere look forward to many pleasant relationships with foreign countries all over the world. Mug. ....,.....-A . x , eomefric enibwea Mathematics began back in the year 17,000 B.C. when it was originated by the Greeks and the Arabs. And now, in l947, it is still challenging us. Thornton students are fortunate in having such a wide variety of math courses offered to them. Algebra is offered first, and is an elective of stu- dents in any year. If a student takes it in his freshman year, he may follow through with geometry in his sophomore year, advanced algebra and solid geom- etry in his junior year, and college alge- bra and trigonometry in his senior year. Thornton students realize that a good background of mathematics is essential to success in many fields. The efficiency of Thornton's math department depends to a great extent upon the supervision of Mr. Guy Phillips, who is the department head. Ml ?7TwiT'Nl'1 l ' x ,....J N M
