European, Modern, and American History, which is required of every stu- dent at Thornton, are the three groups of history. Civics, which is required of every fresh- man student, is an elective for all stu- dents. It teaches about the organization of the government. Commercial law gives the pupil a glance at the legal affairs of our nation. Commercial Geography explains the influence of the locality and climate upon enterprises, business opportunities and ideals of the various peoples. Economics is concerned mainly with how the pupil can make a good living and how the government uses, controls, and makes money. Sociology deals with the origin and evolution of society and the different functions of human groups. The Social Science Department helps the students to understand not only the history and development of our world but also many practical things of life so he can improve our government.

I During his sophomore year he strug- gled through those everlasting nouns, verbs, and conjunctions. He will always remember the first speech he gave in literature class and the first composition written during his junior year. Now he is a senior! If he desires to look behind the scenes or charm an audi- ence, he, no doubt, will choose dramatics. Perhaps he prefers to discuss different world-wide problems with others, then by all means, he should choose debate. On the other hand, if he is interested in writing, the journalism class is the log- ical place for him. He may either work on the school paper or the school an- nual, or both if he desires. The English department is Thornton's largest department, and is made up of nineteen teachers under the supervision of Mr. O. F. Umbaugh. I 5 ew i 2- V 9 .S

o f 0 mea 9111190 ? ,. X Today, as never before, the young people of America realize the many benefits to be gained from the knowledge of a foreign language. As the nations of Europe can now be reached in a few hours by airplane, many Thornton stu- dents are likely to realize their dreams of traveling to foreign countries. Courses in French, Spanish, and Ger- man offer the student an excellent oppor- tunity, not only to learn to read and write the language, but to speak it as well. Even after one year's study, boys and girls taking the same language are able to carry on simple conversations among themselves. Latin, the fourth language course offered at Thornton, provides the stu- dent with a basic knowledge of our own language, since English is largely de- rived from it. Although it is almost impossible to speak Latin, persons per- suing the study of it find it very inter- esting and helpful to them in their other subjects. The language department, under the direction of Miss Mildred E. Anderson, is doing much to contribute to the in- creasing interest of Thorntonites in foreign affairs. With the United Nations organization and the good neighbor policy in full swing, people everywhere look forward to many pleasant relationships with foreign countries all over the world.
