'N L. l I A Page 20 ,. 1 l . ll 13:25 rammar rem and J' l Nr , Oh, those fortunate seniors! They have all the luck when it comes to Eng- lish. If, during their first three years, they have made an A or B average, they may choose dramatics, debate, public speaking, or journalism instead of fourth year English. The fourth year course consists of English Literature and further work in composition. The senior can now recall the good old days when he was a freshman. He was then introduced to a wide reading program, which developed an apprecia- tion for good literature. He obtained his books from either the English Rental Library, which contains 22,739 volumes valued at 5B23,538, or from the main library, which contains ll,8S0 volumes valued at 31,398 over last year. The stu! dents may also use the main library for reference work under the supervision and guidance of two librarians and stue dent assistants. .

I During his sophomore year he strug- gled through those everlasting nouns, verbs, and conjunctions. He will always remember the first speech he gave in literature class and the first composition written during his junior year. Now he is a senior! If he desires to look behind the scenes or charm an audi- ence, he, no doubt, will choose dramatics. Perhaps he prefers to discuss different world-wide problems with others, then by all means, he should choose debate. On the other hand, if he is interested in writing, the journalism class is the log- ical place for him. He may either work on the school paper or the school an- nual, or both if he desires. The English department is Thornton's largest department, and is made up of nineteen teachers under the supervision of Mr. O. F. Umbaugh. I 5 ew i 2- V 9 .S
