Superintendent of Thorton Township High School and junior College. ulaerinfenclenf NVQ the students ol' Tlrornton Town- ship High School, have for our superin- tendent a quiet, mannerly, and distin- guished gentleman, whom the world has chosen to call Dr. Yllilliani Estus MeVey. For twenty-eight years Dr. MeVey has served well both students and faculty. He has given freely ol' his knowledge to all who needed it, and generously of his aid to all who asked it. He has been a friend to those who wanted a friend and a leader for everyone to follow. For Dr. MeVey is not just the superintendent of our school, he is Thornton. Page 9

Page 8 Frank P. Cowing Walter Haines Edward R. lfVaterman The path to success is laden with many pitfalls unknown to us. Friendly leaders are needed to guide our puzzled minds. We find them here, along the way. Marv! of glclucafion G. H. Gibson A. H. McDougall Constant vigilance, wise leader- ship. To the Board of Education of Thornton Township High School, those four words express the very essence of the momentous job they have undertaken. It is a job without thanks or praise, and they have un- dertaken it voluntarily, receiving no material gain for their efforts. The Board is made up of five men, namely, a company president, a con- sulting engineer, a township official, an attorney, and a banker. These men, from several representative walks of life, all have a common de- sire to keep Thornton in the hon- ored position that it has attained. The company president, Mr. G. H. Gibson, was, before retirement, head of the Chicago Steel Car Company. He has served the Board faithfully for the past 35 years. The consult- ing engineer, Mr. A. H. McDougall, has been a member of Thornton's Board of Education for thirty-four years. The township official, Mr. Walter Haines, the attorney, Mr. Frank P. Cowing, and the banker, Mr. Edwin R. Waterman, in conjunction with the two previously mentioned mem- bers, have such responsibility as em- ploying faculty members and deter- mining their salaries and regulating the budgets and expenditures of the school. To these men, who have served us so well, we owe a great debt of gratitude.

W-X Page 1 0 Miss Helene Wilson, Dean of Girls, has always been a source of inspiration and help to Thornton's girls. She has willingly given her 'time and effort in solving their problems, and has worked with them as a friend. Miss Wilson was elected during the past year to the office of President of the Illinois Association of Deans of Women. She has been Thornton's Dean of Girls for fourteen years and is constantly busy as Sponsor of the Girls Club. She is a faculty member of Purple X. As a reward for her untiring effort she has the respect and admiration of every Thornton girl. 7 , l L 5 l Room 108-B is usually the scene of much activ- ity during the course of any regular school day, for it is the office of Mr. O. F. Umbaugh, disci- plinarian and Dean of Boys, head of the English Department, and faculty adviser of KIP and Purple X. The combination of the duties of these positions comprise a full day's work, as Mr. Umbaugh will readily tell you. Years of experience, however, have given him the ability to handle his work efficiently and with a complete understanding of the problems of teen-age boys and girls. As Dean of Boys, he helps to show Thornton's male students the way to a clean-cut and eventful high school life. As disciplinarian, he comes in contact with almost every problem faced by the average American youth, and in most cases is able to do much toward straightening out the trouble. As the close of school draws near, Mr. Um- baugh concludes another year of faithful service and understanding guidance to the students of Thornton. Helene E. Wilson, B.A., M.A. Uni- versity of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Oxford University. Dean of Girls.
