GUY PHILLIPS This, the thirty-first edition of the THORNTONITE, is dedicated to Mr. Guy Phillips, Head of the Mathe- matics Department at Thornton, and a member of the faculty since 1923. Mr. Phillips has inspired many students, through his influence he has become a part of Thornton's tradition and history. He has never taught a mathe- matical principle without applying it, or an ethical one without living it. Page 4 Both students and faculty know him as a gifted teacher and a helpful friend, a gentleman in the highest sense of the term. His exemplary sense of fairness gives the individual every chance to prove the opposite point of view. He is of irreproachable character, honest and frank, he is smilingly willing to help, he works hard, thinks clearlyg he sets a high standard of work-

manship as a classroom technician, and he has a real sense of humor. In 1919 Mr, Phillips received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota, special- izing in mathematics, and in 1922 he received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. From 1920 to 1921 he was superintendent of schools in Mcfflusky, North Dakota, and in 1933 and 1935 he taught at the Central High School in Evansville, Indiana. In 1956 Mr. Phillips was married to Miss Anna Gurston, Secretary to Dr. Williiixn 12. McVey, Super- intendent ot Thornton Township High School. As extracurricular projects, Mr. Phillips has heen a member of the school committee on hoys' activities and chairman of the faculty representative committee.
