Without the excellent advice and leadership given by the capable and understanding men of the Board of Education, X Thornton Township High School would not have the excellent rating it holds today. The members of the Board are elected by ballot by voters of the township, the secretary and attorney are elected by the group, and the treasurer is elected by the three trustees of Thornton Township for V a term of three years. The Board meets the third Friday of each - month to discuss the numerous problems of the school. Wfalter Haines 7 l'rank P. f.UXVl Some of the important duties of the Board of Education are to employ faculty members and determine their salaries, and to determine policies, budgets, and expenditures of the school. In 1919 Mr, Phillips received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota, special- izing in mathematics, and in 1922 he received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. From 1920 to 1921 he was superintendent of schools in Mcfflusky, North Dakota, and in 1933 and 1935 he taught at the Central High School in Evansville, Indiana. In 1956 Mr. Phillips was married to Miss Anna Gurston, Secretary to Dr. Williiixn 12. McVey, Super- intendent ot Thornton Township High School. As extracurricular projects, Mr. Phillips has heen a member of the school committee on hoys' activities and chairman of the faculty representative committee.
