Lnzluafry . . . pure inleazn . . . ,aricle . . . pride in 340:-nfonh name . . . Aer recorolo aclieue- FACULTY Not a thing of hricit and mortar, hut a democratic and progressive institution of iearning whose function is to inspire the youth of the community with the wiii to achieve honestly in the outside worid, to provide them with the mentai and physicai attrihutes necessary to do so, and to guide their growing personaiities as they graduaiiy attain such power and scope - that is Thornton Township High Schooi. Rather, it is Thomton's group of highiy trained administrators and teachers whose enthusiasm, sympathy, and understanding accomplish these aims. Thornton's facuity has iong heen recognized as one of outstanding exceiiencc and cxempiary versatiiity and experience. Visitors to the Thornton campus marvei at the amount of individuai attention which they see given to each student, and at the atmosphere of ciose camaraderie and feiiowship which they ohserve hetween the facuity and the student hody ot such a iarge institution. in a survey taicen recentiy, ot the eighty-eight teachers in the high schooi facuity, it was found that forty per cent of them have taught in Thornton more than ten years, thus accumulating for themselves an unexceiied icnowiedge of the community and its youth, of the prohiems to he met in Thornton ciassrooms and the hest soiutions to those teaching prohiems, as weii as innumerahie friendships and ioyaities on the campus, among coiieagues and students, and among the citizens of the town. Understanding comes with iong experience. Fresh, new viewpoints and dittering theories maize for discussion, improvement, and progress. Thornton teachers come to the institution from aii parts of the country. At Thornton they contrihute their ideas to group approval, hiend them to seiect the nest points of them aii, and use their personai initiative and their group cooperative eitorts to transmit the henetits to the student hody. Fifty-eight per cent of Thornton teachers come from diiterent schoois within the horders of iiiinois- fourteen per cent come fr , . om our neighhor state of indiana. To this group of hme experience is added another which come from Kansas, Montana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucicy, New Yorit, iowai aitota and Pennsylvania Missouri, California, Ohio, North Caroiina, South D Most vitai to the continued energy and high competence of Thorntonsitacuity, and therefore to the progress of the schooi, is the program of avocationai recreation I d emp oye hy its memhers. Twenty-six per cent of Thornton's teachers use indoor and outdoor sports to refresh mind and body after the fatigues of a day in the ciassroom. Next popuiar ot' avocations is music, reading is approved after thatg and traveiing is the fourth choice. A wide range of interests and taients is dispiayed in the toiiowin 2 resuits of the survey on avocations: social woric, photography coiiections ranging from h arrow eads to hrst editions and pottery, interior decoration and repair, care ot' dogs, landscape gardening and tiower growing, aviation, magic, creative writing, mechanics, hoat huiiding, artcratt, painting, cooicery, ianguage study, needieworit, and Giri Scout ieadership. Each of these recreations adds its hit to the heaith of a part of the teaching hody, and thus contrihutes a great deai to Thornton's assurity of a future as successful as the past. Educators have ever reaiized the necessity of travei to acquire new horizons and new perspective, new interest and icnowiedge, and fresh understanding ot the human attitudes with which the teacher must worit. in the past two yars. seventy-two per cent of Thornton's facility have traveied, visiting every state in the union. Sour of the teachers went from coast to coast during the summer. The favorite terminais for vaca- tions were the far Yvest and New England, to which two sections thirty per cent of the facuity journeyed. The Northern states and Canada were favored nextg the deep South was visited hy the next greatest numher of teachersg and iastiy the Middie Xvest. More than thirty-tive per cent of Thornton's teachers traveied away from the mainland of North America or out of the United States during the past two years, visiting ireland, Scotland, England, itaiy, South America, Centrai America, the West indies, Canada, Hoiiand, Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, and France. in the past three or tour years seventy-three per cent ot Thorntonis teachers have engaged in outside study, ni which nnmher twenty-seven per cent are rieparlmentai ieariers in the facility. Resniting parity from these iignres, and pnrliy from the high standards which Thornton maintains concerning facility competence, the teachers of this institution hoid a remaritahiy high ievei in their percentage of higher degrees. Fifty- one per cent of the faculty hoid Master's degrees. Page Seventeen
