LADY TROJANS The lady trojans express their joy upon Take State 50-39 Romp Over Pomona Thornton Trojans won the Class 4A state girls basketball champion- ship with a 50-39 victory' over Pomona at the University of Colorado Events Center. The win gave Thornton a 23-2 record and the teams second title since 1980. Second-ranked Thornton controlled the game by closing the door on Pomona’s strong inside game. Thornton's talented backcourt, including Sylvia Hernandez, Amy Diesburg, and Cindy Cornett, combined for 34 points. Cornett led with 13, Diesburg scored 12. This trio also built a 14-9 first-quarter lead. Cornett led the way with six points. While Hernandez and Diesburg scored four each. Thornton established a 25-17 half time lead on baskets by Diesburg and Tammy Ihnen and a free throw by Hernandez. Pomona finished the first half shooting 26%. Thornton, more selective and successful from the outside, shot 42%. .It appeared Pomoma's shooting would heat up in the third period. The Panther's out scored Thornton 5-2 in the first two minutes to trail by only three baskets. But over the next three minutes Pomona went cold. With Pomona's offense on ice Thornton took command building a 35-25 lead with 1:30 left in the quarter. A Pomona cold spell in the fourth quarter ended any hopes the No. 6-rated Panther’s had.
