May I Have Your Attention Please? by Charly Hogc It begins promptly at 10:25 every morning with the earth-shattering thump of the microphone being readied. Abruptly the voice starts, doing its test to sound alive as it rattles off a barely-audible collection of monotonous information. The announcements have begun. The announcements have been carefully prepared to inform students about the school and the events of the week. Instead, they seem to become a time for chaotic chatter, a chance to get two or three minutes of sleep, or a short period of boredom for many of those still awake. In the gym the announcements are broadcast through wonderful giant speakers which make them sound like some deep-toned medieval death chant in a bizarre alien language. Many of the faculty regard the announcements as noisy distractions and obnoxious wastes of time. Soon, after the sporting events and lunch menu is read, the droning grinds to a halt. The loud thud of the microphone being set down is heard. It is 10:30. 141
