I by Rhonda Bethea Yvonne Camara, campus supervisor, monitors the progress of 35 students at Thornton.These students have a history of attendance and academic problems. Her job as a shadow is to make sure these students attend their classes. You'll never know when I'll be there. warns Camara. But when I'm there, you'd better be there! Camara also stresses the importance of participating in class to these studcnts. I realize that sometimes these kids will go to class and just take up space. admitted Camara. However, by having the students turn in progress reports they realize where they stand grade wise, and what they need to do to pass. Many students benefit from the shadow program others do not, and have to withdraw. But that's not the idea of the shadow program. Show off or just Transportation By Larry Barton Students at Thornton High drive to school for a number of reasons. Whether it is to avoid the inconvenience and monotony of riding the bus or to show their friends what kind of car they have. Students either drive their own cars, or borrow their parents. In most cases they have their own because they have to drive to work or their parents want them to have one. At Thornton there are an assorted number of vehicles, ranging from pick- ups, musclecars, sportscars and the usual type of automobiles that the students drive. Some of the cars students have are bought by the parents,but the parents expect some sort of repayment,such as: good grades, to excel in a sport, or to take care of the car and pay for any damages that they cause to it. It's nice to have your parents buy you a car, but they expect a heck of a lot in return, stated junior Scott Kruger. Most of the students buy their own car. They like the sense of ownership and the responsibility that goes with owning it. I like having my own car. You can do what you want to do with it and you don't have to worry about asking your parents for money in order to dress it up, said Senior Troy Hagaman.
