9351 North Washington Thornton, Colorado HORIZONS And the greatest challenge I will encounter Is that of getting to know myself. As I take on this challenge I shall gather my scattered selves into one I shall have hope, and, with this hope, I shall have fear, As one cannot exist without the other. And, if, by chance, my hopes become confused With my fears, I shall open my eyes to visions of beauty, My mind to wonder, and My life shall be overcome with a feeling of poignancy Too deep to be gathered in a single world; Therefore, I shall search for another world, Just over the horizon. Frus- trated and confused, they waited patiently in line for the results of their new sched- ules. Many students were subjected to classes they did not want. As the year pro- gressed, conflicts were evened out and soon forgotten. 7ary From The Everyday 5 j5JJ To The Away from the busy schedules of the every- day life at T.H.S., some students enjoy their lei- surely hours away from the city. Friendships are built through ev- eryday life at T.H.S. Con versa tions and activities lead the way to friendship. 2 Powder Puff Shows What Every year at Thornton High School, the senior girls play the junior girls in the traditional spirit week Powder Puff football game. This year the seniors defeated the juniors by a score of 6-0. Here are two different versions of what happened. Viewpoint from a senior player: The senior girls viciously destroyed the junior girls offen- sively and defensively. TherSeniors were outstanding in all aspects of play. Unfortunately, the juniors had far too many penalties which left them with more yardage lost then yardage gained. If the juniors would have been more organized, they might have been a slight competition for the seniors, but, as we all know, the juniors just didn't have it in them. Sorry juniors — maybe next year you’ll be able to beat someone!!!!!!!!!! Cynde Fleck Senior P.P. Player Viewpoint of a junior player: Even though the game was rigged. I felt that it went pretty well. The juniors held up very well considering their opponents were blood-thirsty, unorthodox, and a complete abomination to the word football. Do not get me wrong. The seniors only touchdown was indeed well earned, but the two previous plays that helped them gain the necessary yardage were not. Despite the all too ap- parent viciousness bet ween a few of the players, the com- radere never really ceased during the entire game. There- fore, I felt that all the girls involved should receive a hand, Except for the seniors, of course, who should receive a fist. Marcy Williams Junior P.P. Player 8 9 Spirit Week Adds More Spirit b Thornton High 11 From The Mountain, With such joy wc now stand. Trembling on the threshold of a beautiful life: Eager and alive. The old things will fade away, Lingering in the recesses of the mind. Giving way to the boldness and the challenges of a life that belongs to us. The experiences we’ve shared have shaped us and we are now ready to go on Because we are young, and vital. And before us lies a new horizon. Annette Hick ins Reach For The Horizon That o 12 Yj The Campus Uses Homecoming Brings King and Queen: Dick Jones and Robin Swanson Senior Attendants: Jim Farrell and Deanie Wesebaum 14 Junior Attendents: Kevin Kinnear and An- Sophomore Attendants: Mark Bernal and tone tie Linza Jennifer Bradley The annual Thornton High School Homecoming Dance was held in the Commons from 7:30 to 11:00 on Saturday, Octo- ber 6. The dance was an enjoy- able event with many students attending it. Joyful Horizons 15 A New Horizon When I was young Everything was strange and new. Each little piece of knowledge, every event great and small, was all important. As I look back now, life becomes a blur of memories strewn together by a chain of thoughts. I love everyone of them: Happy or sad, Each meant a different thing; Each began a new part of life. But I musn’t be disappointed, For I know that ahead of me there lies a new horizon. Holly Pickles 16 Administrators Broaden Leadership Is Action Not Position Student Horizons Stan Johnson. Dean of Students Richard Bohlender. Registrar Dr. David Korn. Staff Development Direc- tor Sue Miles, Dean of Students The high school is a com- plex and dynamic organiza- tion which is influenced by all facets of the community. The high school appears on the surface to be an insensi- tive?, bureaucratic institu- tion; however, I like to think of it as a family of individ- uals all striving towards a common goal or “horizon!” This family, by descriptors, is labeled as students, par- ents of students, teachers, administrators, custodians, cooks, secretaries, etc. All of these individuals have a definite and powerful influ- ence on the school. Impor- tant, then, to remember is that we must work with each other and together to reach that “horizon.” Rein Mattes Principal 19 Fine Arts Broadens Students' The fine arts courses at Thorn- ton High involve complex projects. Many interesting creations are com- pleted in this area of the curriculum. The courses consist of painting, draw- ing, printing, pot- tery, jewelry, fi- bers, and sculp- ture. Aesthetic Horizons Music is something everyone cares about. One can find talented students in this part of the school. Every one joins to- gether in classes to create terrific musical sounds. Many work long and hard at their music and in the end it was all worth it. Business Students Mr. 01 in Sundberg as the Business Department head, makes sure that everything runs smoothly. The Business Department has many different classes which enable stu- dents to have wide contact with many opportunities for future ca- reers. Mr. Sundberg works with the other business teachers to cre- ate a positive learning situation leading to future business hori- zons. Achieve High Goals The Business Depart- ment has a lot of fun teaching their stu- dents all about the business world. Some of the different classes available are Accounting I and II, Distributive Educa- tion I and II, Typing I- VI., Business Filing, and Shorthand. The students really appre- ciate the help they get from their business teachers. 23 Foreign Language And I.M. C. The casual observer might feel that the world is a huge place. Why in America alone we have so many different languages, it's difficult to com- municate with everybody. The average student will not go through a day without hearing someone speak an- other language. Because peo- ple find it difficult to commu- nicate if they can't speak the same language, T.H.S. offers a large Foreign Language pro- gram. Three different lan- guages are taught. For the really interested students, some classes offer a four year program. 24 -M r Leaders In Communication Because the needs of our students vary so greatly, the staff of the I.M.C. has continually im- proved the re- sources available. Books, microfilm, microfiche, and per- iodicals are all easi- ly available. Thanks to the I.M.C. and its staff, students at our high school have found their li- brary a very useful place. 25 Home Economics Mrs. Shcrick’s class works on food-lab worksheets. Home Economics has been very involved in this year's activities. Among the activi- ties have been a variety of projects involving: cooking, sewing, budgeting, and life- planning. This year's studies have been valuable to all Home Economics students' fu- tures. Kara Tobin and Kathy Baker Shines Through Again work on their sewing projects. Language Arts Leads Students To Ho, Learning the art of language has always been the key to opening new horizons for mankind. The Language Arts Department has always geared its program to expanding students’ language abilities to the utmost. Interesting and challenging programs provide the necessary keys to unlock the stores of knowledge and the doors of opportunity to THS graduates. Above: Mr. Pickens helps review for one of his (in)famous tests! Center: Jackie Swensson. Chairman of the Language Arts Department confers with Billy Taylor. Language Arts Secretary. 28 zons Of Knowledge And Imagination Right: Sophomores. Chris and Scott, react enthusiastically to lessons on commas. 29 Math And Science Students Show 30 Their Skills - Hard At Work This year the math and science departments of Thornton High, have become more and more challenging. The science department has the Black Magicians and the math department has started two new endeavors. One endeavor is that students have become active in the Colorado Mathematics League, with 32 schools participating. The other activity is the CSU Math Day, where students compete for school trophies and individual awards. Physical Education 2 o' vr f- o 32 0 5 Vy ! Randy Berg lifts his barbell. Hockey players scramble. Shines Bright This Year Thornton High School’s physical education classes have been in- volved in many curricular activities. Whether the students are running, exercising, or learning a life-time sport, they are always having fun. The students are prepared for any physical opportunity and receive many benefits from the activities. 33 Tim Clark flexes his muscles. Social Studies Opens ClaSS oflheirprojectl SAmerican History Class Up New Horizons For Students This year's Social Studies De- partment expanded because of the increase in students. Re- modeling was done to make an- other classroom where the old Social Studies Resource center was located. The Resource Center was moved to the top half of the library. Mr. Pickens has spread his teaching skills to the Social Studies Department. 35 Helping Hands Barbara Armstrong. Art Resource Center Verntce Bain ter. Records Clerk Genevieve Bayless. The stu- dents pictured are involved in the technical process of Com- mercial Art. The other Vocational pro- grams are Printing, Auto Body, Drafting, Auto Mechan- ics, Carpentry, Electronics, Welding, and I.C.E. All the programs specialize in voca- tional occupations. i 38 Develop In Vo-Tech The vocational programs promote interest. Much ef- fort and work from each student is put forth toward turning out outstanding projects. Explanations from teachers are always a helpful guide for students and produce successful workers in the Vocational world. 39 JLsyir C ' (P71JL- a fr z s-t' Z 3L J ZJ 2 zij2J£v S h U- oC si JT gt_ -£ Jv (it ou c L. - CL CULe et- Y -y Cu - jjgt Vx J Maestro . . DEC A Devoted To Preparation Marketing and Distributive Education is a vocational program designed to prepare young men and women for careers in marketing, merchandising, and management. The high school students receive group instruction in general marketing techniques as well as individual instruction. The seniors in MDEmust have at least 15 hours of actual job experience per week under supervision of a local business person. Most senior MDE students work between 20-25 hours per week and earn S2000-S5000 during the school year. The work experience is a vital part of the total training program and the student divides his time between study in school and practical work experience. DECA is the club part of Distributive Education. The word DECA means Distributive Education Clubs of America. DECA members are involved in many fun and exciting activities which include retreats, an Almost anything goes Contest, district competition, state competitions. Vimre Gavito Photograph By: Brian DidplJ The end of school is coming up And soon the seniors will depart. Some will leave with much distress Others new lives soon will start. Some will find that special love With wedding plans in mind for Spring. All their friends will come with joy For the happiness their vows will bring. Some will look forward to college Enjoying their summer before. Hoping to find new friends and dreams And coming to learn much more. Seniors Some will get a prosperous job To make all their dreams come true. And live the life they've always wanted Until their life is through. Do we really know what will occur Or do we take a guess and hope. That everyone will be alright And under stress will cope.
