'4With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firm- ness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are ing to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan-to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations? One' hundred years ago, President Lincoln spoke these wordsfn upon the aftermath of the Civil War. The goals he set forth to carry out with understanding and a gentle hand have not yet been fully accomplished, just as one hundred years of reflection have not yet solved the riddle of exactly why the Civil War came about or what exactly had been accomplished at its end. During this centennial period, 1861-1965, historians com- memorate this ugreatest of all convulsions of the American spirit X in trib tes to the reat men and battles that were a art of it.
