CALDRON 1963 THORNTON JUNIOR COLLEGE HARVEY, ILLINOIS To the Students of Thornton Junior College: This year at Thornton Junior College can be most important for you. It should be a time for setting definite goals and for making decisions for future vocations and professions. It is a time to be used in achieving scholarship and in developing a_ philosophy of life. Worthwhile and lasting friendships will be built. The stature and reputation of a college are built and maintained not just by the faculty but also by the students. The many fine graduates of Thornton Junior College have given it recognition as a college of excel- lence. The faculty is constantly revising and expanding the program to improve the opportunities for its students. You can take pride in having a part in this excellence. We hope your achievements here and in your future endeavors will be such that the college can take pride in your accomplishments and that you can look back with pleasure to your attendance at Thornton Junior College. Lee E. Dulgar Dean j - Dy ; } Hatisncaditspie) Te Harrie oer HT ; DEAN OF MEN Mr. Byron Kee Last year Mr. Kee served as the freshmen class counselor. In this capacity he gained valuable experience in handling the problems of the students. He also served as a co-sponsor of the Men's Club and this year he is continu- ing as the sponsor. It is evident that Mr. Kee is well prepared for his first year as the Dean of Men, for he not only knows the administra- tive functions of his position but is also regarded with respect by the students. i ‘ eer 3 ded eI eee Can, DEAN OF WOMEN Miss Adelaide Childs This is Miss Child's second year as Dean of Women at Thornton Junior College. She ‘serves a needed function, that of making it easier for the freshmen women to adjust to the change from high school to college life. She is equally interested in assisting the sophomore women with their problems, for all the girls can have problems which may well require the assistance of an interested faculty member. | ‘: Spt Hit Pinata fetid Thay i Pei Pee HET BY i SENATE Second Row: Karen Callanan, Marilynn Lau, Wayne Marley, Mary Ann Johnson First Row: Carl Lindstrom, Marsha Swanson, Norm Mangano, Cynthia Poli This is the first year for the Student Senate. It is composed of the presidents and vice-presidents of the following groups: Coed Club, Men's Club, freshmen class, sopho- more class, three elected from the sophomore class, and one representative from the college publications. In addition to sponsoring the Gym-Jams, the Mixers, the Homecoming Dance, the Boulderino, and the Prom, the Student Senate also has the responsibility of distributing the student activity fees to the various school activities. Sponsors for the Student Senate are Mrs. Helen G. Fesler and Mr. Raymond C. Sherman. In addition to assisting the officers of the Senate, they also serve to coordi- nate the actions of the Senate with those of the administration and the faculty. - tg Cynthia transmits winning blow i n JERRY MILLER, CAST MEMBER HA aa one + i ue) os MEN’S CLUB OFFICERS Second Row: Wayne Krass, Pete Wasilkoff, Dennis Miller, Neal Franklin First Row: Dave Drechsel, Norm Mangano, Carl Lindstrom This year the Men's Club is under the direction of Mi. syron Kee, who is also the Dean of Men. In addition to sponsoring the Mother-Son Banquet and the Sleigh- bell Ball, the Men's Club also provides Smokers, at which the members can see a good movie as well as eat a more than satisfying number of hamburgers. By sponsoring the Smokers, the Men's Club enables students, who normally would not meet, to get together. These Smokers also serve to break those long and mono- tonous hours of study, for they are held on week nights. The officers are elected at the close of their freshman year. In the fall of the next school year, after the officers have become sophomores, the freshmen board members are elected. The officers for the current year are Norm Mangano, president; Carl Lindstrom, vice-president; and James Gawlik, secretary-treasurer. 11 COED COUNCIL i es SSS PRESENTING T.J.C’S SORORITES Third Row: Pat Christ, Marcia Davis Second Row: Shirley Maina, Shirley Kennedy, Olivia Shutter, Jean Winter- ringer, Karen Nelson First Row: Adelle Cook, Barbara Wells, Donna Lovrich, Judy Peerbolte, Verna Watson GAMMA Second Row: Karen Callanan, Diane Bano- vich, Mary Jane Buckner, Millie Vetterick, Madelaine Aubert, Carolyn Chenoweth, Charlotte Nash First Row: Gail Evans, Catherine Dunn, Carol Schmidtke, Geraldine Zboreak, Linda Lilley, Joyce Kappel DELTA Second Row: Frances Vena, Mary Zuber, Ruth Becker, Sandy G. This is best accomplished by stimulating an increased usage of the lang- uage. Another method is by exposing the students to pictures as well as printed material from France. Through these media members are brought closer to the realization that France, its language, and its people are an important part of the world we live in. The Club is sponsored by Miss Florence Wunderlich and is open to those students taking first or second year French. This year's officers are Ron Pritchard, president, Ursula Olling, vice-president; Sandy Johnson, sec.-treasurer; and Bob Dahl, sergeant- at-arms. - 17 DER DEUTSH VEREIN ¥ ‘ | Back Row: Dieter Meister, William Zimmerman, Dennis Erickson, David McClenahan, Ronald Phillips, Jack Dorn, Dennis Johnson, George Euland, Ed Sylvestrak, (not shown) Linus Clark Front Row; Tim Osterlund, Tom Sheldrake, Janice DeYoung, Sharon Oldaker, Janice Yates, Mike Jerding, Joe Farrell, Ray Caldweld The German Club, Der Deutsch Verein, is sponsored by Miss Jeannette Hills. Its purpose is to acquaint students with the German language and customs. It is a chance for all students of German to combine fun and enjoyment with a study of German. It provides these students with an opportunity touse the German that they have learned in classes. One of the highlights of the year is their participation in the annual Christ- mas party of the foreign language clubs. This year they put on a skit featuring an angel choir and its instructor, Beethoven. Current officers are Sharon Oldaker, presi- dent; Irv Wilkins, vice-president; Pat Christ, secretary; and Dieter Meister, treasurer. 18 EL CiIRCULO ESPANOL Back Row; Judy Lambert, Susan DeBoer, Frank Nuessel, Bill Horn, George Waters, Ed Denson, Elaine Kavelaras Front Row: Janet Franknecht, Marlene Wood, Carolyn Pond, Mary Ann Johnson, Diane Hodge, Carole Stark, Terriann Quirk The mastery of Spanish is a significant accomplishment and is made even more so by our proximity to South American countries, whose official language is Spanish. For the most part the Spanish Club is composed of those students currently taking first or second year Spanish and who have enough interest to join this Club as well as to attend classes. The sponsor of the Spanish Club is Miss Florence, Wunderlich who encourages her students to join the Club and further their exposure to the culture and customs of Spain. Miss Wunderlich is assisted in this function by Elaine Kavelaras, president; Frank Nuessel, vice-president; Mary Ann Johnson, secretary-treasurer; and Bill Horn, sergeant-at-arms. 19 Top Row: Mike Jerding, Carol Maczka, Chuck Mosser, George Waters, Kiiri Tamm, Douglas Smith Bottom Row; Charlotte Nash, Sharon Milet, Isla Rothenhoefer, Diana Staat, Mary Ann Johnson, Jeanne Nelson, Gail Dunker THE COURIER The Courier is the school newspaper which majestically appears in the Union Room every other Friday. The Courier is also available in the library and office. It is in this paper, which is sponsored by Mr. John Stanfield, that we can find out the latest news as to school events and social activities. This year's Courier staff, which is headed by George Waters, had an extra difficulty in meeting their deadlines - lack of staff members. Even with this handicap the Courier staff has done a fine job of turning out a school newspaper. 20 THE CALDRON Yes, we the Caldron staff, under the direction of Mr. Roy Swanberg, are responsible for what you behold. Itis our attempt to record what happened during the past school year. There are many’ things which are not in this book because of the lack of space but just the same there is much in this book of inter- est, some of which may be new to you. - Back Row: Linus Clark, Dayton Ward, Roger Weseloh, Randell Wenig, Ken Pe Say 43 ting. Members are elected into the society purely on the basis of their scholarship, and no weight is given to popularity, leadership, or extra curricular activities. Students are elected as soon as they have proved their scholarship. This may occur either in the freshman or sopho- more year or after the student's graduation, in the case of alumni members. The motto of Lambda Epsilon, Lux Esto, or Let there be light, is indicative of the enlightenment and knowledge upon which civilization and progress depend. It is toward this objective that the Honor Society is dedicated. This year's officers are Carl Lindstrom, president; Judith Lambert, vice-president; and Orrell G. Kauffman, secretary-treasurer. 26 EDUCATION CLUB Back Row: Phil Cothroll, Eleanor Platell, Marilyn Lau, Charmaine Carlson, Diane Carlson, Carol VanderWoude, Sharon O'Keefe, John Inman Front Row: Barbara Carlson, Janet Franknecht, Lorraine Moore, JoAnn Sholar, Connie Miller, Gail Evans, Pat Dutell This was the second year for the Education Club, which is under the sponsorship of Miss Helen Fesler. The Education Club is a local chapter of the Student Education Association, a subdivision of the National Education Association. The organization is composed of those students who are planning to go into the field of teaching. The goals of the club are to perpetuate an interest in teaching, to help its members to realize their goals, and to point the way to a job in their field of interest. The club members who were elected to hold office for the past year were Pat Duttell, president; Janet Franknecht, vice-president; Marilyn Lau, secretary; and John Inman, treasurer. 27 Dorothy Borys Nancy Godin PS ee st i wee 30 TOP ROW Coach Pete Schloss 21 Gil Flores 31 Marv Keeling 53 Winston Bowman , 58 Jerry Rehr 66 Millerd Munger 70 Bill Harper 76 Bill Staat 87 Pat Bennett MIDDLE ROW 36 Jim De Vries 71 Morris Johnson 23 Henry DeBose 30 Art Gaetano 16 Dan Fox 33 Jack Stalley 13 Jim Russo 11 Bud Browning oy Orland David 72 John Lorenzi BOTTOM ROW 55 John Klein 67 Wayne Krass 81 Rich Panozzo 74 Ray Esparza 78 Glen Weaver 62 Dave Dreschel 50 Bill Bower |GO! Most of the club members won their letters while on either the basketball or football team; but there are also letter winners from baseball, tennis, and track. During the school year the Lettermen's Club sponsors the after game dances, which are held in the gym after home basketball games, and also sponsors the annual banquet which is held in the spring for members of the club. The sponsor is Mr. Peter Schloss, who has held that position since the club was formed. This year's officers are Dan Fox, President; Henry De Bose, Vice-President; Kathy Hagen, Secretary; and Nancy Godin, Treasurer. 38 FIELD AND TRACK 33 Field and track sports place.emphasis upon endur- ance, although skill is often necessary. These sports are rather broad in their scope, for they include races, cross-country, discus, and high jumping just to mention a few. This year's field and track sports were coached by Pete Schloss, who appears in the above picture. PHYSICAL EDUCATION BOULDERINO ROT ER Be pe a ot atl PR Oe foe gee oni Boulderino is the name given to the annual tug of war between the freshmen and sophomore men. This chilly affair takes place in the spring when the waters of Thorn- ton creek, which runs between the opponents, are ice cold. Each year a record of the winning team is recorded on the trophy, a grave stone, which is kept in the Union Room. _ ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERINTENDENT Dr. J. D. Logsdon is the superintendent of Thornton Township High Schools and Junior College. This position involves a great deal of responsibility, and Dr. Logsdon has proved, during the six years he has been here, that he is more than capable. Dr. Logsdon received his B. Ed. degree from Illinois State Normal University and his M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Chicago. The honor roll is a goal that students work for throughout their school year. 80 FRESHMAN CLASS Mary Ann Johnson, secretary-treasurer of the freshman class; Wayne Marley, president of the freshman class. This year's Freshman Class has well endured the change from high school to college. This change is one that requires that the students adapt themselves to spending more time at their studies. Few freshman classes have adjusted so rapidly, for it is evident by their serious expressions and their long record of study that most of the freshman have realized the importance of a college education. 82 eee ee Top Row- Left to Right Ed Denson Rich Kotara Winston Bowman Dan Bissonnette Norm Warns Al Rossi Wayne Billadeau Bottom Row- Left to Right Marvin Whitkanack Evelyn Dunnam Madelaine Aubert Les Burgess Frank Petkus Top Row- Left to Right Mike Faoro Bud Browning Paul Bentley Gene Lindell Bottom Row- Left to Right Shirley Kennedy Diane Baer Carole Stark Karon Burk iiedahabanteete te ee ee nee Top Row- Left to Right John Lorenzi William Vanderbok Howard Jerz Jim Bush Bottom Row- Left to Right Joanne Nelson Karen Sanford Pat Hannon Jean Winterringer 83 84 Top Row- Left to Right Pete Wasilkoff Bernard Rosebrough Abdul Muthleb Barry Biard Bottom Row- Left to Right Carmen Lendi Lynn Colombo Carol Maczka Maryanne Carlson Top Row- Left to Right Roderick Martin Rich Simac Alas Battenberg William Swanson Bottom Row- Left to Right Jayne Blessing Marian Coggeshall Ursula Olling Lynn Vollmer Top Row- Left to Right Linus Clark Jerry Crowder Robert ‘Turek Bottom Row- Left to Right Joe Fos ter Mary Brainard Ronald Lukas Top Row- Left to Right Art Jellema Russell Blaauw Paul Flaherty Millard Munger Bottom Row- Left to Right Bob Fisher ‘Tom Girard Martin Petrak Charley Bacon Top Row- Loft to Right Bob Van Kalker ‘Yom Ieimlich Fred Drolen Jerry Kernagis Bottom Row- Left lo Right Jack Grzeski Carolyn Chenoweth Dawn Dennett Rich Naszkiewicz Top Row- Left to Right Jim DeVries Melvin Wilkens Bob Nordstrom Tom Berry Bottom Row- Left to Right Pat McCauley Millie Vetterick Sandra Geschke Klaine Kavelaras 85 86 Top Row- Left to Right Kd Miller Hubert Ozment Dennis Erickson Howard Schoenleben Bob Kane Bottom Row- Left to Right Bruce Gephart Bernandine Cerny Carol Hill Vurnice Jordan Top Row- Left to Right Neal Franklin Richard Fritsche Mike Michalski Joe Garbacz Boltom Row- Left to Right Carol Vanderwoude Mary Salisbury Karl Todd Top Row- Left to Right Daniel Hard Dennis Kunka Orland David Ronald Lundstrom Bottom Row- Left to Right Diane St. Pierre Doris Bogue Judy Krause Edythe Jackson Top Row- Left to Right Art Studenroth Jerry Cagle William Zimmerman Alan Haan Bottom Row- Lefi to Right Phil Cothroll Morris Johnson Robert Brown Top Row- Left to Right atrick Barry Fred Ehlert Ken Bailey Bill Kamykowski Bottom Row- Left to Right Karen Callanan Janice DeYoung Pat Christ Nancy Anderson Top Row- Left to Right Bob Zum Mallen James Keeney Dennis Delanty John Leensvaart Bottom Row- Left to Right Sandy G. Jim Massick, George Dorey (chairman), Nancy Godin (Secretary), Bob Dratwa, Martin Maher, Marv Keeling. Bottom Row: Barbara Fanning, Dorothy Borys, Sharon Smiljanic, Paula Eilers. The student elections at Thornton Junior College areconducted by the Student Election Commission, composed of students in the Junior College. The Commission is sponsored by Miss Marie Weis, political science instructor. To be eligible to vote in elections a student must be registered either as a freshman or as a sophomore voter. The members of the commission have the responsibility of con- ducting the registration. The members of the commission also act as judges during the election and have the duty of counting the ballots immediately following the close of the election. They must do this in the presence of the sponsor of the election commission or in the presence of the sponsor ofthe student council. Should a question arise involving the validity of a ballot, the final decision is made by the sponsor present. Ballots are kept for a period of seven days following the election and then destroyed. This enables a recount within the seven day period. We the students at Thornton Junior College owe our thanks to the work done by the commission to keep the elections at Thornton fair and honest. 98 THE LIBRARY Miss Doris A. Halverson (pictured on the right) is the librarian at Thornton Junior College. She has the responsibility of insuring the students at Thornton a well organized and up-to-date library. There is a complete selection of reference books as well as 153 different maga- zines for which the library subscribes. This material long with the large collection of novels gives the ambitious student facilities for reading and relaxation. Miss Halverson is assisted by Mrs. Gertrude Ring as well as by various student helpers who work as library assistants. 99 The Evening Division of Thornton Junior College has a larger enrollment than the day school, with 127 students entered in technical courses and 954 in the various academic courses. The Evening School also offers courses of special interest as well as trade extension courses, giving a total enrollment of 1797. The Evening School is under the supervision of Mr. Arthur Stejskal, Director, and Mr. Melvin DeGraff, assistant Director. Together they face the job of organizing classes and schedules for the large number of students in the Evening Division. In the picture below Mr. Sherman explains the operation of an office machine to members of his class. . 100 fo oreo eee : COLONIAL GkaNig’ Student explains map in Mr. Petty's Geography 102 class. On Friday, November 30th, there was a fire at Thornton Junior College. The fire, which was preceded by a minor explosion at 5:50 p.m., took place in the chemistry store- room between rooms 236 and 237. It damaged all the chemicals which had just been listed in a 30-page inventory. An es- timated $10,000 loss was suffered in the storeroom and the adjoining classrooms. It is not often, that there is even a minor fire at Thornton, and it was fortunate that ‘this fire was limited to the chemistry store- 102 room. The most apparent effect of the fire to the students and teachers was the odor caused by the burning chemicals, which filled the halls in that part of the building for weeks. In the spring or fall, or whenever the weather permits, the Harvey police may decide to crack down on the students or other unfortunates who park their cars in a no-parking zone, or for more than an hour in one of the numerous one-hour zones. The police officer checks the marked tires every hour for violaters. The students rush about erasing the chalk marks or move their cars every 55 minutes. An observer might be tempted to ask, What is this - a contest between -the cops and the students? Well, it's a little game we play. At the first convocation of the year, Scott Morrison, conversation pianist, pictured on this page, entertained the student body with his presentation. Mr. Morrison used makeup to create the illusion that the composer himselfwas appearing. During. another convocation Dr. Bergen Evans said that merely knowing is not enough. We must doubt; we must question; we must be willing to stand for these things which we believe, in face of great adversity. At our last convocation Mr. Sidney Lens spoke to us about the African Volcano, its cause and potential. DAD-DAUGHTER BANQUET bs.” | e On February 13, at Cavallini's in Midlothian, Alpha Sorority presented The King and I, this year's Father- Daughter Banquet. One hundred eighty-seven dads and daughters were served roast beef or fried chicken dinners in a royal atmosphere. Donna Lovrich, entertainment chairman for the banquét, presented a Queen for a Day skit with Jack Bail (Carol Vanderwoude) as master of ceremonies and a special guest appearance by Mith Miller (Donna Lovrich). Other chairmen for the banquet included Marcia Davis, general chairman; Judy Peerbolte, programs; Verna Watson and Barbara Schurr, publicity; and Sandy Karow, decorations. 105 % HOMECOMING _DANCE The Thornton Junior College annual Homecoming dance was held away from the school this year. On November 1st, the Governor's Mansion in Hazel Crest, Illinois, saw approximately 125 couples dance to the music of Ed Johnson and the Mayfairs. The highlight of the evening came when last year's royalty, Sharon Scholz Marley and Milt Marley, crowned Nancy Godin and Jim Russo king and queen of the Homecoming week-end, Kick-Off 1962. 106 i ea } 3 Se URGE REED axed The scene of this year's annual Sleighbell Ball, was the Crystal Ballroom of the Shoreland Hotel, held on December 15th from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Norm Mangano, Men's Club President, was general chair- man for this annual event, which has always been considered one of the top social events of the pre-Christmas social whirl at Thornton Junior College. Ed Johnson and the Mayfairs, who supplied the music for the Homecoming dance, were also on hand for the evening of dancing and gaiety. THE STAGGETTE This year's annual Staggette dance, Cotillion Candle- light, was held at the Silver Lake country club on the night of March 30, 1963. The enchanted couples danced to the music of the Ralph Bergger band. As tradition held true, the Staggette court and coranation proved to be the highlight of the evening as Gerry Zboreak, mistress of ceremonies, held the crowd tense before revealing the Maid of Honor and the Staggette Sweetheart. Kathy Hathaway, the 1962 Sweetheart, had the honor of giving the rose to Donna Lovrich who was chosen Maid of Honor and the crown and bouquet of roses to Cynthia Poli, Staggette Sweetheart for 1963. It was truly a night to remember. 108 Last year's prom was held at the Steger- Lincolnshire country club. The theme of the prom was C'est la Nuit, ( This is the Night'-). The prom committee was under the direction of Larry Kaiser. Other active members were Nancy Godin, John Kwasny, and Mary Szacik, just to mention a few. Lane Emery and his band provided the music for this enchanting affair. After the dance most of the couples went to a restaurant or night club; and to do things up right they went to the Dunes, bright and early that same morning. 109 THE PROM GOES ON 110 INDEX OF ADVERTISERS Paorera ewery NtOTeUn Nae Gig k Geile 6b.
