11F4lD11D11 11B1fML11L To the Thornton Academy student body in September 1932 there wasn t much hope of having a championship team like the one that our school boasted of the year before Our whole backfield was wrecked with the exception of Captain elect Sawyer The line vxas shattered around the ends and was strong only in the middle This was the prob lem facing Coach Bowie, but again he showed his great coaching ability and molded another championship eleven into shape. He built his back- field around Sawyer at quarterback. Day, shifted from end, and Mitchell, a new comer, played the half. The fullback position was easily filled by Stackpole, a hard running and plunging back. The line had to be strengthened so Gillespie and Boucouvalas played the ends-both capable men. Cobb and Regina played the tackles very effectively and Mac- Donald teamed With Boothby for the guard positions. Philbrick played most of the games at center until he was injured and then he was replaced by Mercier. With these capable eleven men we began our 1932 schedule. The first game of the season was the annual practice game with Biddeford which was a hard fought contest that ended up with a score- less tie. Neither team showed much strength but this game put us in condition and in our next start we dropped Sanford to the tune of 12 to 0. Next came the game with Deering: a direct reverse of the type of game played last year-we ran away with them, 33 to O. 1541 THE TRIPOD - 1933 if 1
