He built his back- field around Sawyer at quarterback. Day, shifted from end, and Mitchell, a new comer, played the half. The fullback position was easily filled by Stackpole, a hard running and plunging back. The line had to be strengthened so Gillespie and Boucouvalas played the ends-both capable men. Cobb and Regina played the tackles very effectively and Mac- Donald teamed With Boothby for the guard positions. Philbrick played most of the games at center until he was injured and then he was replaced by Mercier. With these capable eleven men we began our 1932 schedule. The first game of the season was the annual practice game with Biddeford which was a hard fought contest that ended up with a score- less tie. Neither team showed much strength but this game put us in condition and in our next start we dropped Sanford to the tune of 12 to 0. Next came the game with Deering: a direct reverse of the type of game played last year-we ran away with them, 33 to O. 1541 THE TRIPOD - 1933 if 1 Ihls xtar Iht Rtd Rxot of South Portland had tht but ttlm that lf hls put on tht Htld for iomt trmt Ihornton xx vs undtftattd and thls Q mt mtlnt 1 lot to XXt won tht gunt hx .1 Iont pomt that mme drrtttlx off ot Pnutk Suxxxtr 1 tot I ht Stort xx is 7 to 6 and tht gimt xx is tlsllx tht btst md hirdtst fought gimt of tht Qtwson X7x't thtn rt turntd to QICO xx htrt xxt mtt Chtvtrus on tht folloxxrng Saturday Ind 'Inntxtd 'tnothtr XILIOFX I3 tt O Iht tolloxxlng Qaturdix tht tt1m rin xxrld ln tht -I4 to f IIAIIUINIHQ of XVtQtbrooIt Porthnd xx is ntxt Ind htrt xxt pulltd out 1 xlctorx afttr 1 poor ISIFSC hilf showxng On ntxt g1IllTd'1y xxt vxtrt Qupptmtd to h1xt 1 sttup IH Prxtburg but thrs turntd out to ht our hrg surprlit From tht xtry Qt1rt tht gimt was hard fought ind not muth d1ITtrtntt xvli shoxxn httwttn tht two ttams fXfttr Ste sixvlnfv bltk ind forth Ihtrnton m1nagtd to put atross tht xxrnnmg touthdoxxn md thls Itft U1 our only ohsticlt Brddtford Iurktx Dix s,t1rttd out 1 rarnx dwrk dlSI'N3I day but httort thc g1mt itirttd tht Sun hrokt through ind xxt had Qpltndld playlng condr H0119 Ihornton Q 1tt1ck optntd up t1rIy 1nd xxt wtrt ahtad I3 to O at tht INII Our Qoirrnq xx 11 oxtr hut Brddtford nmnagtd to put ICFOSS Z1 scort so tht 1nnu1I itrugglt goti down ln hmtory as 1 xxctorx for Thorn ton fXt tht tnd oi mothtr xrttorlous stuson four of our hoys xx on tht honor ol htmg plittd on tht fXII Conftrtntt tltvtn Ihtst hoys art C ohh I'moutoux1Ios Sxxvytr md Du Cxoich Boxvrt noxv has J rttord of LOICIllI'lg two untltftutti ttims IH 1 roxx durmg hls Stay it Ihornton XVt hopt ht w1II rtptu lgun ntxct ytlr I ttttrmtn C ohh C lplllli tItct Rtglnm Ppoothhx Phrlhrxtk Mtr ltr Cnlltspnt McDonald Boucot1x1Ios Smxxxtr fiptnn Dmy XI1tchtII Pm.. The first hoop encounter that the Academy had, started off what was to be one of the best basketball seasons that Thornton has had for quite a few years. Five well trained men, and some very good reserves, came through with a decisive win of 45 to 31 over the Alumni group. This showed that if they could win against a strong team like that, they could also win from other teams equally as strong. Utilizing the knowledge gained from their apt coach, R. Edgar May, they bowled over a fighting Sanford five with a win of 156 THE TRIPOD - 1933 First Row: Coker, Sullivan. Capt. Polackwitch, Higgins, Boucouvalas.
