Students fly to foreign lands on wings of AFS This year, the American Field Service enabled two students to go abroad - Sheri Nelson to Sweden, Rich Wrede to Greece - as foreign exchange students. In addition, the club finds homes for any foreign exchange students coming to Thornridge. Sponsored by Miss Mary Ann Macan- der, this year AFS welcomed Sigvard Johannson to TR and presented him with a class ring, a yearbook, and a sub- scription to the Bagpipe. Among the club's many activities are the Pepsi and donut sale and the Lasagna dinner. Students are nominated by publication advisers on the basis of writ- ing skills and grade average. Outstanding students maintaining high grade averages are nominated to National Honor Society. Members then are selected on the basis of faculty rec- ommendations, leadership qualities, and participation in extra-curricular activities. bf' Twirlers glitter with glamour Entertainment is a key word in the vocabulary of members of any perform- ing group, and TR's Twirlers are no ex- ception. This year's six-member team devoted every Monday and Wednesday evening and period 5A each school day to practicing routines to entertain fans ,.,.fM s-.4 4....Z7-- during half-time of football and basket- ball games. Besides their half-time and pep assem- bly performances, the girls entered the National Baton Twirling Association competition, held on April 5.
