Students study language in class, but learn the country in clubs. In TR's Language Department stu- dents learn more than just to speak a for- eign language. While the first two years are mostly grammar, vocabulary, drills, and home work, the third and fourth years are different. In these classes stu- dents put their knowledge to work by reading books or short stories in foreign languages. Another phase is the study of foreign culture through books, films, and field trips to ethnic neighborhoods and restaurants. For students who want to know even more about other lands, there are French and Spanish Clubs. One project of the Spanish Club was to sponsor an orphan in Mexico. The French Club subscribes to many Parisian magazines to enrich the members' reading in French. Speech 'important Speech can play a very important part in anyone's life, so all freshmen are re- quired to take one semester of Speech I. However, for those who wish to, TR has a number of more advanced classes from Speech II to RadiofTV. In these classes students learn to improve their public Y part' of TR life speaking, to act or to direct a television production. from these advanced speech classes come many of the cast and crew involved in fall, winter and spring theatrical pro- ductions performed annually for the en- tertainment of TR's students. Above Left: Miss Schultz instructs Richard Paterik in Speech I. Fifty students participated in this ex- perimental program combining English and speech with greater emphasis on improving the speaking ability of freshmen. Mrs. Watts taught in conjunc- tion with Miss Schultz. Above: Kathy Davia and Linda Binder watch and listen as Sue Steffens describes a newspaper article in Speech I.
