The influence that Van has had on perhaps 3000 youths in these 34 years is inestimable. He has touched and sometimes molded their lives with his wisdom, his interest, and his humor - always confident in the worth of all individuals. He has understood and appreciated the community, threading his tenuous way through diverse opinions and eventually uniting the citizens to build the best ed- ucational program possible. He has lent his personal effort to community projects, sometimes beyond physical endurance. Through 34 years he has made the words TK and Van synonymous. Trojan A native of Hart, Van came to Mid- dleviile in 1934 to teach biology and math. He was assistant football coach and later baseball coach. In 1940 he became principal and also taught math and government. He assumed the superintendency in 1952. As superintendent, he has seen the Boys’ Gym and Band Room added to the High school, also the McFall and West Elementary buildings. May the rewards of his retirement years be, measure for measure, as he has given. 5 In Memory of Bob and Joe Joseph Buehler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Buehler of Freeport, was the second member of the Junior Class to be killed in a car accident. He died on September 16, 1967. Joe was a promising youth and a wonderful friend to those who knew him well. He was a respected member of his community and class. And the stately ships go on To their haven under the hill; But O for the touch of a vanished hand. And the sound of a voice that is still. from Tennyson’s Break. Break, Break” Robert Seger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Seger of Irving, was to have been a Junior at TK High School when he was killed in an automobile accident on September 2, 1967. Bob will long be remembered by his fellow students as a member of the Varsity Football Team, Vice- President of his Sophomore class, president of his Eighth Grade class, a promising student, and a dear friend. 6 This IS Trojan Country 68 percent of Thomapple-Kellogg’s students are transported over 1,000 miles of bus routes, which weave through the 125 square mile district extending from Freeport to near Caledonia to Gun Lake to near Hast- ings. Awaiting all the students is a curriculum vary- ing from refresher Math to Calculus, from Personal Typing to Senior English, from Gen- eral Shop to Fine Arts. Nevertheless, a book is a symbol of all learning. Many Forms It’s obvious that not all study is routine classroom dialog. Mike takes out a book... Four young men from Junior College and Davenport visit the school for a whole day, talking to students ... Linda, Margaret, and Mary assess their individual study projects with Mr. Perry ... Senior English students agonize over an in- class theme ... Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet inspire projects and posters ... Mr. Jackson’s room always glitters with bulletin boards ... Mr. Smalley gives individual help to Gary. 10 Strong in Business, Art, and Academics TK faculty and administrators work continuously to strengthen the curriculum and offer more choices. Typing, bookkeeping, and business machines combine to form the popular major in commercial.” ... The art program is growing in numbers, popularity, and techniques taught. Gaye is an advanced art stu- dent, Dave, a beginner ... But the academic standbys remain. TK offers a four-year higher math program ... Interest in Latin remains high and French is a-build- ing. I! Work With Heads Shop teaches many skills! Joe con- centrates on a plate he is drawing, Steve welds, and Mike works on a lathe. Eighth grade science students make mobiles to help understand the gene theory ... Darla and Phyllis have good luck with their pie ... In gym the girls do acrobatics ... Berny lifts weights to increase his power in foot- ball. There Was Happiness in Trojan Country. As one can see, everything wasn’t cut and dried: Donna. Vickie, and Sandi clown in Journalism ... Vicky, Cathy, Cheri Deli, and Cheryl sing it up on Slop Day ... Elaine and Cheryl chat on Dress-up Day ... Nancy, Joan, Randi, and Jan put on a skit for a Pep Assembly ... Dave and Dave say they are really going to clean up old TK ... Nora and Linda in an- other skit ... Dave and Berny have a friendly rumble. 14 Interesting Personalities Enriched Trojan Country Coach Tony Mason from the Uni- versity of Michigan gave a mem- orable assembly; he brought Ter- ry Barr with him ... Student teachers Dave Boersma, William Voss, Bernice Houseward and Norma Andries were enjoyed ... “Pete was Athletic Business Manager ... “Skip LeClearwas the genial photographer. Nineteen sixty-seven was the year of football champion- ships. as TK added two trophies to its collection. The Varsity won their fifth Expressway League crown in spite of their loss to Wayland, their first in the history of the League. The Seniors, Gary Van Elst, Bill Miller, Mike Booth, and Don Van Dyken, were the backbone of the team. A Trojan tackle was a formidable thing. The team had its share of honors when Gary, Bill, and Sophomore Steve Sanderson made the League All-Star Team. Teammates will always boast of playing with ALL-WOOD, All-State, and All-American Gary Van Elst. The undefeated frosh were champions too and the JV’s had a 7-1 record. Despite the 5-12 record, the outstanding performance of Sen- iors Bill Miller and Gary VanElst and the effort of the whole team made every game a fight to win; moreover, the occasional victories were savored more, for their scarcity. Gary and Bill were chosen as Expressway League All- Stars. Gary went on to become All-WOOD and All- State. The equally unimpressive record of the JUNIOR VAR- SITY. 14-12, does not tell the true story of the tough battles and near-wins. Steve Sanderson, tall and skillful, was the JV flash. The FRESHMEN had a fair year, as their record shows. The EIGHTH GRADE made good showing with 5 won and 3 lost. The SEVENTH GRADE were definitely in the cellar, with no victories. In a thrilling Tournament, the Eighth Grade team beat Maple Valley 46-16 and Wayland 43-33 before Hamil- ton defeated them 38-32. Sandy’s passes were always on target. — Five Cheerleading Teams The five cheerleading squads displayed their fine talents, cheering their teams on through the seasons. Four members of the Varsity squad, Jan Wood, Chris Ball, Randi Page and Janis Jop- ling attended cheerleading camp at Camp All-Ameri- can. For the Varsity the 1967-68 season was a busy schedule with pep assemb- lies, practices, and games. Leaving the squad because of graduation are Nancy Sothard, Jan Wood, Chris Ball, and Mary Carpenter. The Junior Varsity gained ideas for cheers and pep assemblies at a cheerleading clinic at Saanac. The Freshman squad assisted with pep assemblies, besides practicing and cheering at games. The seventh and eighth grade squads put on their own Junior High assemblies. It takes place in Oceania, which is under the rule of Big Brother and the Inner Party. Winston Smith and Julia defy Party rule by falling in love and getting married. They rent a room in the Prole section of London from an old woman, who tells them of life before Big Brother. They fall in with O’Brian, a member of the Inner Party, thinking him to be part of a plot against Big Brother, and fall neatly into his trap. Julia and Smith are joined by Parsons and Syme, who have betrayed Big Brother. They are reoriented into the Party, and Big Brother again reigns supreme.
