ELTON LAWRENCE. For a quarter of a century his friendliness and congenial personality have endeared him to the students of TK. After twenty-two years of teaching agriculture and science, he used the wisdom and experience he gained to become counselor to grades nine through twelve. His executive talent came to light when he added the principalship of the Junior High School to his counseling duties. Mr. Lawrence's devotion and sacrifice have won him a place in all our hearts. 3 The completion of TK's expansion and improvement program provided facilities which contrasted greatly with the disorder that Andrea, Luana, and Jane found the first week, or two, or three. While the new and improved shop building, the new science classrooms, and the library affected us the most, we were aware of the new West Ele- mentary Building and the addition to the Freeport Elementary School. With the betterment of the school, the whole student body was given a chance to measure up in TK's rising level of education. foB Football was the password for fall. From the minute the team members burst through the paper hoop, held by Janette and Linda, until the last score was made, everyone was excited. This excitement reached its climax when Middleville was rated first in the state in Class C for the second straight year. We celebrated this event with a snake dance through the Main street of Middleville--but team members Norm, Jamie, Frank, Dave, Tom, and others went by truck. Along with everyone else, Coaches White and Page and Co-Captains VanElst, Rohrbacher, and Camp- bell admired their many trophies. At the end of the seasons--fall and football --each Senior player hit, for the last time, the dummy, which Bruce held. Some of those guys hit pretty hard! Through the year, we attended several Interesting and informative assemblies. An assembly given by the Community Chest featured former Detroit Tiger player Phil Regan, a native of Wayland. He was introduced by Rev. Schipper, co-chairman of the United Fund Drive. YFC brought Dave Grant to inspire us to higher moral values. In addition to the more formal assemblies, we attended weekly pep meetings. Here, urged on by the pep band, we generated enough steam to move our teams on to victory. Through assemblies, our school spirit grew greater, as did our appreciation of the people who made them possible. WlMi i Parades, snow, chilly breezes, and basketball games highlighted the winter months at TK. Before the snow came to limit outdoor activity, the football games were of paramount interest as Bonnie, Kathy, Jane and Jody can testify. As the basketball season progressed, enthusiasm bubbled over. Pep signs decorated the halls and the coach's door. Many people came to view the contestants and floats, one of which carried TK'S Homecoming court: Myrna, Kathy, Bonnie, and Mandy. When the snow arrived, it brought both beautiful scenery and the hope of snow vacation. SWy The one required subject for everyone at TK was study. Many students became adept at various subjects because of their good study patterns. Gaye focused on her art project while Jim increased his musical proficiency by practice. Jerry became skilled in the use of the shop equipment. Dottie was intent on gaining useful material from reference books. Diane, Randi, Chuck, Ann-Marie, Marty, Lynn, and Alice were in deep concentration here. In their last year at TK, the Seniors were busier than ever. Jody typified the many Seniors who gave service to the school. A number of Seniors excelled in various areas. Norm was good in the shop program while Tim Bender, Bill Sullivan, Tom Griffith, and Tom Sharp worked in the science area. However, the Seniors weren't always serious and studious, as Harv B., Tim B., and Dawn K. make obvious. The class had a good representation of athletes, and many, Rob among them, won awards for their outstanding performance. Throughout the year, the graduates-to-be enjoyed especially the pep assemblies, where they vociferously urged the team on to victory. Whatever the Seniors did, they did with extra relish, for soon they would be no more a part of the student body at TK. % r Vi The underclassmen lived in a world which, although dominated by Seniors, was still their own. All underclass- men--witness Alice, Mary, Lynne, Kris, Randi (Barbel was an except ion)--were required to take phys. ed. unless they were in band. Some underclassmen like Carolyn were hall moniters. Waiting in lunch line was a usual procedure for Terry, Carol, Cary, Ed, and Duane as was congregating in the hall for Cheryl, Kathy, and Stephanie. Underclassman intently watched their cronies on the JV team. They were less intent, however, on Slop Day, as Donna and Barb exemplify the way most of them looked. JttfuO 1-ltCjlv The Junior High students were busy with their varied activities, which included studies as well as recreation. Joyce, Sandy, Nora, and Howard were the officers of the highly rated band. The eighth grade orientation class had many interesting exhibits, including Mary's clay dishes, for Open House. On Slop Day, Tom, Jim, Terry, Bill and Berl were right in style. Since all Junior High were required to take plenty of exercise, as Dave and Keith agreed. The hall by the Boy's Gym was the social gathering place for many Junior High boys and girls. Spring brought an air of excitement and expectation to TK Sayoko Eguchi, an exchange student from Grand Rapids, accompanied the Seniors on their trip to Washington. Upon their return, they attended the Junior-Senior From, ’’Showers of Stars. Gary Gaye, Jamie Margaret, and Rob Mary were among the couples in formal attire. Spring brought the combination Spring Art and Music Show. The graduation committee made plans. At the close of spring, thoughts turned to summer and the next year, with Ted and Ter as leaders. ErcL Yoaa One page can but suggest the happenings of the hectic days as the year ended. Mr. Lawrence received a watch from the faculty, administration, and school board as he completed twenty-five years of service; the French and Journalism classes had sampled the gourmet table at Gull Harbor; and a Senior English class was only one of many in the throes of final exams. The emptiness of the corridor speaks eloquently as the last student and teacher have gone through the open door into summer vacation. M. R. DE HAAN 1891 - 1965 FOUNDER OF THE RADIO BIBLE CLASS There was a man sent from God. . . (John 1:6). Converted at the age of 31, Dr. M. R. Dc Haan, successful physician in western Michigan, turned his back on the practice of medicine to accept the call of God to preach the Gospel. After pastoring several churches in Grand Rapids, he was led to establish the now world wide broadcast called RADIO BIBLE CLASS. . . to bear witness of the Light. . . (John 1:7). Dr. De Haan possessed unusual gifts of Bible interpretation and Gospel presentation. I hrough his radio teaching, his many books and booklets, and his unique public ministry, he was literally used of God to bear witness to millions of souls in about 40 years of faithful Bible teaching. I housands received light upon God's Word and uncounted numbers were brought to the Light of salvation as this man of God proclaimed the Gospel. . , that all men through Him might believe (John 1:7). Though now his powerful pen is laid aside and his distinctive voice is silent. Dr. De Haan's work is continuing to grow, bringing the story of Jesus” to millions more through the expanding ministry of RADIO BIBLE CLASS. Today Rev. Richard W. De Haan, Teacher of the Class, is heard weekly on more than 600 radio outlets through- out the world as he carries on the work his father began on one small station in 1938. RICHARD W.
