SCHOOL LOYALTY We’re loyal to you, Thomson High. We're purple and gold, Thomson High. We'll beck you to stand 'gainst the best in the land For we know you have said Thomson High. Rah! Rah! So crack out the ball, Thomson High. We're becking you all, Thomson High. Our team is our fame protector On boys for we expect a victory from you, Thomson High. Bring out that dear old flag of purple and gold. Lean on your sons and daughters fighting so bold. Like men of old and giants Facing reliance, shouting defiance. Oskewawa! Amid the broad green plains that nourish our lands. For honest labor and learning we stand. And onto thee we pledge our heart and hand Dear alma mater, Thomson High. Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1958, would like to dedicate our annual to the memory of our former classmate and friend, Frank Zuidema Jr. We shall always remember his cheerful smile and his good-natured disposition. He was always willing to contribute his share in all our class projects. Although he was with us about a year he became a part of our class and he was liked by everyone. Frank was a fine Christian boy, who always set good examples for us to follow. In dedicating this annual we hope that we can live up to these standards set by Frank, that we will be better citizens in the future years. To try to tell in these few words my hopes for each of you, the graduating class of 1958, is a difficult task indeed. My thoughts turn back to these past years of work and mischief and happiness, of ups and downs in our day by day contacts. But of all these, the ones I shall remember best are your accomplishments. Today I rejoice with you. May you go forward in your life's work while striving each day to make this abetter world in which we can all live in peace and freedom. May God go with you. Nrrti. H.S., being of sound mind, body, and of highest intelligence; do hereby declare and publish in the presence of witnesses this our last will and testament. To the rest of the students we leave the teachers in hopes they will learn as much as we have. To the juniors we leave our bookkeeping books in hopes they will make good use of them. To the sophomores we leave our ability to be quiet while in Homeroom. To the freshmen we leave our worn out dictionaries. Dale Zenk - wills his physique to Danny Kness. Gene Fehler - wills his red hair to Mr. Underwood. Jerry Senneff - wills his old Chevy to the highest bidder. Bill Feddersen - wills his ability to keep out of trouble to Joe Frosch. Donna Miller - wills her quietness to Bette H. in hope that Bette will will take the hint. Dick Miller - wills his ability to get along with all those girls to Terry Sturtevant. Janice Geerts - wills her ability for cheerleading to Joann Jurgens. Carolyn Ditsworth - wills her ability to dance to all the underclassmen boys who don’t know how to dance. Vernon Medendorp - wills his dieting will power to Martin C. Everett Appel - wills his many charming talents to the junior class. Dick Kness - wills his ability to answer dumb questions in Bookkeeping to anyone dumber then him. Judy Noordhoff - wills her diamond to Lilly Kay to make her sparkle and In the fall of 1954, 16 shy Freshmen enrolled in Y.C. H.S. During the year, Wayne Bronkema moved away but Vernon Madendorp moved to Thompson from Erie leaving 16 Freshmen. On September 17th we were initiated by the Sophomore Class to become full fledged members of Y.C. H.S. That evening we were honored at the Freshman Reception. After a hard struggle we passed on to the Sophomore Class. During the year we gained three classmates - Donna Miller, Dave Rutherford, and Frank Zuidema - and lost three classmates - Patsy Spencer, Dave Rutherford, and Judy Gordon, leaving our class with 16. We sponsored several dances under the supervision of Mr. Underwood, our class advisor. Our main event was the initiation of the green Freshmen. Altogether, the year passed quietly and quickly. shine. corn. (cont.) Our biggest year in Y. C. H. S. was our Junior year in which we had many activities. Everyone welcomed Judy Brown to our class in October. Our losses this year were Judy Brown, Frank LaShelle, Norma Swett, Gene Ottens, and Frank Zuidema, leaving our class with 13. To help earn money we sold pop and popcorn at all the home basketball games. Everyone was happy when our class rings arrived in early November. On April 5, 1957 the Junior Play, The Million Heir, was presented before a large crowd. We also published the school paper, the Yorkster. Gene McDuff furnished the music for our Prom, on April 26, which had a theme entitled Young Love. This year we entered the Senior Class. Our only loss was Margaret Wade, leaving us with 12 Seniors. At the beginning of the year we sponsored the Freshman Reception. On November 22, 1957 we produced an excellent play, It Walks at Midnight. Class Night was held May 23rd. Baccalaureate was held on the 25th of May with graduation on May 28th. This being the year of 1978 and I, Everett Appel, having just purchased a jet helicopter was flying around looking at the scenery one day when I noticed Judy Bronkema, the former Judy Noordhoff, working in her garden on a little farm that she and her husband Morrie own. I dropped in on her and over a cup of coffee we began discussing our former classmates and before 1 left 1 had decided to try and locate as many of them as 1 could. Before beginning my trip I flew back to Thomson picked up my good friend the Rev. Vernon Medendorp, pastor of the York Community Church of Thomson to accompany me on my trip. While in his home we began reading the Thomson Review. We saw an advertisement which read Dick Kness, Excavating and Bulldozing, Phone 2394. So taking the chance that Dick has taken over his fathers business we flew out to see if we could locate him. We found Dick’s trailer but his wife informed us that Dick would not be there until evening. Still having our Thomson Review we noticed another ad that Mr. Jerry Senneff was opening his own Trucking Co. in Chadwick, HI. So we decided to look Jerry up. We found him working on one of his trucks. We chatted awhile and he mentioned that Donna Miller owned a restaurant called Cross-Town that served the best meals in town, so we decided to have lunch there. While talking to Donna we noticed a redheaded gentleman come in the door. I immediately recognized the gentleman as being Gene Fehler. We talked to Gene over lunch and discovered that Gene was the owner of Fehler's Brush Company at Chicago, 111. He told us that he was speeding along on one of his trips one day and was stopped by a state police officer who turned out to be Dale Zenk one of our former classmates. Gene also informed us that Bill Feddersen was the Dean of the University of Illinois at Champaign, Illinois. Se we decided to fly down and see him. While visiting with him his secretary came in to tell him something. His secretary was none other than Carolyn Ditsworth. Carolyn told us that she had read in a Chicago paper that Richard Miller was in Chicago competing in the National Drag Races there. We flew to Chicago to watch him race. After the races we talked to him and he invited us to the Hotel Sherman where he was staying, for dinner, (cont.) (cont.) While eating dinner an attractive young lady came in who Dick immediately called over to join us. This lady turned out to be none other than Janice Geerts. She told us that she was operating a Beauty Salon in the hotel and was doing a very good business. After finishing dinner we flew home, as we had contacted all our classmates, and my secretary has contacted me with the message that my new oil well just came through. Today they tell us we are Seniors Twelve years we've worked for that day And now that it's here upon us We wish we could push it away. Carefree we go through our childhood Our teen-age days without much more And suddenly find we are Seniors With our share of burdens to bear For some of us school days are over Out in the world we will go Trying to earn our living Yet looking ahead to our goal. The classmates we've loved and been proud of Will drift farther and farther apart And as the years steal upon us New interests will come to our hearts. But as we go down life's pathway The memories we'll not let depart Are those of our High School days And the friends that were dear to our hearts. We enjoyed ourselves this year and are looking forward to our Senior year and graduation. We, the Sophomore Class of 58, think our year was really great. Some of the boys played basketball, even though they weren't real tall. The girls did a lot to help the team, because they always yelled and screamed. Our teachers were a lot of fun, and we are sorry this year is done. But we all studied hard to pass, to graduate to the Junior Class. We lost several close games. Galena beat us 58-57, we lost to Shannon 65-64, and Lanark beat us in a thriller, 60-55. One of our most heartbreaking losses came in the District Tournament at Chadwick. We came from 11 points behind in the fourth quarter to within one point of Shannon, 60-59, with two minutes left in the game. Shannon then got 5 straight points and won 68-62. Lack of height and inexperience hurt us this season. Next year we will have Junior center Dick Hook coming back along with a group of promising Sophomores and we should have a fine team. We had another good baseball team. We ended our fall baseball season with a 4 win and 2 loss record. Left-hander Gene Fehler won games from Pearl City and Shannon. Right-hander Johnny Creighton won games from Pearl City and Shannon and lost two games to Chadwick. Hard-hitting catcher Dale Zenk led our batting attack. We will be fighting hard to repeat as the Conference champions in the spring baseball season.
