From 1951 to 1968 he served as President of tlze Board and recently has moved to the position of Chair- man of the Corporation following the election of Mr. Williams as President. During Mr. Bartlett's long tenure as President he asserted the leadership which brought about a great many changes in tlze physical plant and academic life of the school: the addition of the Alumni Gymnasium, the new Dormitory, and the new Faculty Houseq the remodeling and renovation of the Main Building, the Kitchen-Dining Room area, and the Science Laboratoriesg and the conversion of the old Gymnasium to the present Chapel. The Students, Faculty and Stall of the Academy wish to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Bartlett for his many years of enthusiastic and devoted support in helping to bring about tlzese important advances. BEN AMES WlI-LlAlX1S, JR. President of the Board of Trustees At the 134th annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of Thompson Academy, Mr. Ben Ames Williams, Jr. was electea' President. We shall be forever grateful for his invaluable assistance in filling out our college applications, sending out transcripts, and writing recommendations. In addition, we shall never forget his inspiring and enthusiastic teaching. For his loyalty and support, we, the Class of 1969, dedicate this yearbook to: MR. GEORGE WRIGHT gfyreaiztzfrn ...J-A We, the Class of 1969, shall be forever indebted to Mr. Pinto, without whose help this yearbook would not have been successfully completed. For his devotion to his students, for his understanding of our problems, and for his kindness to all, we take this opportunity to express our appreciation to: MR. JOHN DECIUS PINTO .Zzfllettzo ' ROBERT FRANCIS KENNEDY MARTIN LUTHER KING DWIGHT DAVID EISENHONVER 1925 - 1968 1929 - 1968 1890 - 1969 This page of our yearbook is dedicated to the memory of three great Americans. All three, Dr. Martin Luther King, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Robert F. Kennedy, lzad a dream, and, as all of us know, each man dedicated his life to the fulhllment of his dream. Dr. King dreamed of an America where black men were free from social prejudices and hatreds. He was a man who dreamed of an America where his brothers and sisters could not be denied an education because their skins were black. Martin Luther King's dream was all of this and more, and he died trying to make his dream a reality. General Eisenhower, although he was a military man, dreamed of peace - a lasting peace among nations and among people. He carried this dream to the people of the world, first as Allied Supreme Commander during the Second World War, and tlzen as President of the United States. During his eight years in oUice, President Eisenhower never ceased pursuing his dream. Robert F. Kennedy dreamed of a world of peace and progress for all people but particularly he was an inspiration to the youth of America. Because he rep- resented the ideals of the younger generation, we all saw in him hope for a national leader that could understand Olll' thoughts and resolve our problems. Eaclz of these men, as different as they might have been, represented an idea that could only better mankind. The passing of each means that we have lost a crusader for our own betterment. ja Yfzfafe 1 X ROBERT R. KITCHING On November 12, 1968, Mr. Robert R. Kitching completed 40 years of service to Thonzpson Academy. Mr. Kitching came to the sclzool in 1928 to be head of the poultry department. For years, Mr. Kitching was responsible for raising all the chickens and eggs consumed at the school. Semi-retired since 1963 when the school .stopped farming, Mr. Kitching still lives in the Main Building and can be seen every morning doing his chores about the school. All of us here at Thompson would like to take this opportunity to salute Mr. Kitclzing for his outstanding dedication to the school. We hope that he will continue his service to Thompson and that we will be able to salute him on future nzilestotzes. zqfzkzzizzfvirafzbn ami fwujy -...fx 'UL aw- ' 4gfZ'i?' MR. FRANK D. DIBBLE H eadnmsler Mr. Dibble is completing his second year as Headmaster here at Thompson Academy, but it seems as though he has been here much longer. This is suggested by the great changes that have taken place in the last two years in the academic curriculum and in the athletic program. A better preparation for college is offered now, and, as a result, a greater number of Thompson students are matrieulating at institutions of higher learning. The enlarged athletic program has enabled more boys with varied interests and abilities to participate in competitive sports, including the new soccer team, as well as the additions last year of cross country, hockey, and lacrosse. These innovations have greatly improved Thompson Academy and have made it a school where boys can obtain a well-rounded preparation for whatever task they may seek to undertake in the future. We, his students, would like to thank him for what he has done for us and wish him well in his future efforts to make Thompson Academy an outstanding institution. MRS. RITA DIBBLE Mrs. Frank Dibble is the woman behind Thompson Academy's headmaster. Her energy and enthusiasm have been noticed and felt by all on the island. Mrs. Dribble spent her childhood in Holyoke, Massachusetts. After attending local schools, she went on to the Springfield Museum and Library. There she learned the functions of a library. This experience proved invaluable in the im- provement and restructuring of the Thompson Academy Library. Mrs. Dribble also displayed her considerable cooking talent, in a time of crisis, by cooking for the whole school for two weeks. We, the Class of 1969, wish to take this opportunity to express to her our warmest appreciation for her contribution to the school. 4.4- MR. RAYMOND THOMAS MR. Mil- ford proved to be too great an adversary for Thompson as the team went down to a sound defeat. The Homecoming game had a more pleasant outcome as Thompson showed the crowd their real worth, defeating Cardinal Cushing 25-0. The next game was against the Harvard Freshmen. Har- vard always presents a problem, and this year was no exception. Harvard beat Thompson I4-O in a game that was hard fought all the way. Berwick was another hard fought game but once again a larger team proved to be the deciding factor as Thompson lost its third game. The team returned to the island to play Holderness. Although the team started off slowly, they picked up momentum and took the game by a score of 29-14. The last game of the season was Thompsonls finest. Go- ing up against previously unbeaten Winchendon. Thompson brought home a 19-8 victory. Thompson went scoreless for the next two games until Co-Captain Doc Adams put one in against Providence Country Day. Still Thompson was without a win until the Christian High game. In this game the score remained tied at O-O until the second overtime. Then Tom Bergeron put in the winning goal for Thompson. This was recorded not only as Thompson's first win, but also as Thompson's iirst shutout. The rest of the season brought no more joy to this first soccer team, but a new sport has won itself a place at Thompson Academy. Cross Country became a serious sport this year, and, under the guidance of Mr. Willis, the team participated in five dual meets as well as the New England Prep School Tournament. The season opened with a win against St. Andrews in a close meet, 29-27. In their second outing, Thompson again came home victorious beating Belmont Hill by score of 32-28. Thompson then lost their three remaining meets in close contests to teams from Thayer and Milton and a iired up St. Andrews team. We are looking forward to having Cross Country back next year, and hope that Mr. Willis' dedicated group will again represent Thompson in still another field of athletics. This fall the J.V. Football team under the coaching of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Horan developed some fine players who will help to continue Thompson's tradition of outstanding football. Tom Cassano and Greg King were co-captains of a team that finished the season with a 3-1 record. After six weeks of practice, the J.V.'s met Milton Academy and defeated them 20-6. The next game was against Thayer Academy and resulted in the only loss for the J.V.'s. The next two games were convincing victories for the team as they rolled over Belmont Hill 14-8 and Governor Dum- mer 30-14. The time and effort that these boys put in on the practice field showed up in the games as their execution of plays and effective defense won them the respect of all the teams that they faced. Next year many of these boys will move up to the Varsity where the experience that they gained playing J.V. Football will help them to bolster the team. The Varsity Basketball team had a very successful season this year winning eleven games and losing only two. Lead by the co-captains Jose Mendez and Cyril Hodge, the two high scorers, this team showed everyone that Thompson is a basketball power. Under the fine coaching skill of our Headmaster, Mr. Dibble, the team developed an exciting style of play that proved to be effective against all but two of the defensive efforts of the opposing teams. The starting five was comprised of four seniors, the aforementioned Mendez and Hodge, plus John Miranda and Pete McAndrew, and sophomore Dave Dibble. These players, along with strong substitutes such as Jim Thomas and Sandy McLaughlin provided some ofthe most exciting, highest scoring basketball for T. A. in recent years. We are all looking forward to next year when members of this year's J .V. team join the Var- sity for another fine season. The Hockey team in its second year had a much improved record over last yearis team. The final statistics gave the team a 4-3 season. In the beginning it appeared as though the team might go all the way as they took their first three games, but then stiff competition came from three of the last four opponents and Thompson was not equal to those more experienced teams. This year's team boasted some fine hockey players in Wayne Jackson, Billy Rafuse and Paul Ross. Jackson and Rafuse were captains this year and unfortunately will be lost to graduation, but Ross is an underclassman and will be back to play for Thompson next year. Also high among the scorers on this year's team was Billy Gannon who had three goals and two assists for a total of five points putting him fourth behind Rafuse with sixteen, Jackson with eleven and Ross with seven. Thanks to the coaching of Mr. Rose, Thompson can now claim an established hockey team with a bright future. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL H- fm-'A First Row: N. Coates, Lynch, DelValle, Longo, Carter. Second Row: Bass, Paulsen, Hulak, Ridge. Third Row: Hickory, Abraham, C. Thomas, Ledwell, D. Cahoon, Hiller. This yearas J .V. Basketball team had an undefeated season as they compiled a record of 12-O. The J.V.'s had everything a good team needs. They had a powerful scoring punch from John Ridge and Bill Paulsen. Also, there was an aggressive defense led by captain Sammy Bass. Under the boards, Chucky Thomas and Doug Cahoon proved capable of holding off any threat from the opponents. Playmakers Tommy Hulak and Jerry Lynch set up and executed fine plays. In every way this was a well-drilled, well-balanced team. In the closest game of the season, the J.V.'s came from behind in the last seconds to beat Assumption by one point. This was accomplished after losing two of the starters by fouls in the third period. In another close game the J.V.'s were tied 26-26 with P.C.D. at half time. Then a skillfully executed full court press broke the game open as they went ahead and won by ten points. Much of the credit for this team goes to the excellent coaching of Mr. Horan who worked hard and saw his labors rewarded with a well-deserved undefeated season. ,71zZmnzufafBv1s,5eiiezJ C5vzWz2212.s' Healy, M. Returning lettermen Jose Mendez, John Mir- anda, Walter Berard and Bill Robertson promise to add experience to this year's varsity squad. In addition, new players such as Bob Tradd and Doug Papp should prove to be welcome additions to the team. As the winter snows melt and the teams take to a sometimes muddy Held, you will al- ways find Mr. Thomas and his assistant, Mr. Willis, out there with the boys trying to beat the clock and the weather to get in a good practice in anticipation of the first game. The one consoling factor is that the competition, too, is faced with the same problems. This year the competition should be stiff. The season opener against rival Christian High should be a real test of the capabilities of this year's team. We shall all be following the team through their twelve game schedule. -----...,., VARSITY LACROSSE Front Row: Mr. Farr, Ledwell, Cassano, Dan Walsh, Bergeron, Boskovich, Shavers, D. This year the Lacrosse team will be in its second year and we can look forward to another exciting season from this club. Sharing the coaching responsibilities with Mr. Farr will be his assistant Mr. Merry. Both these men were outstanding Lacrosse players in college and remain dedicated to the sport now. The boys on the Lacrosse team are learning a great deal from these two fine coaches. After a winning season last year, the Lacrosse team is out to better their previous record. With eleven returning lettermen from last year the team should have the experience that it lacked. Stick handling and scooping will be stronger this year and this should add to the chances for a good season. The season opener this year will be against the Tabor J.Vfs. In a way it will be a home- coming, for Mr. Merry began his Lacrosse playing at that school. Last year the Lacrosse team tied Tabor in an exciting game that was hard fought by both teams. This year's twelve game schedule features four home games which were not possible last year for lack of a suitable field. Thanks to the efforts of the grounds crew, a suitable field has been cultivated allowing for these home games. 11- iil JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL Front Row: Broadard, Colon, J. Baseball team under the able coaching of Mr. Horan should prove to be a fast and exciting little team. The J.V. teams of the past have managed to compile an impressive record for Coach Horan and this year should be no exception. With new players such as Tony Longo and Brian Zaniboni, this year's squad should be among the school's finest. Returning from last year are boys like Tommy Hulak, a stiff competitor, and Norman Coates, an aggressive player in any sport. Mr. Horan will have until May 2nd before his opening game and this should give him the time to mold his boys into a smooth playing unit. WEIGHT-LIFTI NG ,vw .lr t A' W ,. This year, with the addition of Mr. Tura to the faculty, great interest has developed in the fine art of weight-lifting. Each day a small, dedicated group of lifters descend into the depths of the dining hall building to punish their muscles. Bench pressing and curling are the two biggest activities of the weight-lifters, although others have branched out into other forms of exercises in- volving weights. Under Mr. Tura's guiding hand, the boys have developed a sensible program of lifting and slowly building themselves up. This planning is important to weight-lifting, and without the time and effort that Mr. Tura has devoted to weight-lifting, the line program that we now have would not have been possible. iikizb zqwarafv ff .M WM Front Row Mendez Mr Rose, Mr Pasquall Shavers Northrop. 1 Heath J Thomas Mr Pasquall Mr Rose I iibfzo flwaniv VARSITY FOOTBALL Headmaster's Trophy Coaches' Trophy Sportsmanship Award Most Valuable Player Award Most Improved Player Award Best Defensive Player Award Jose Mendez Wayne Jackson Salvatore Tarantino Freddie Shavers Raymond Boskovich Charles Northrop VARSITY SOCCER Most Valuable Player Award Most Improved Player Award William Gaynor Stanley Clark VARSITY BASKETBALL High Scorer Award Most Improved Player Award Best Defensive Player Award Jose Mendez John Miranda Cyril Hodge VARSITY HOCKEY High Scorer Award Most Improved Player Award Best Defensive Player Award JUNIOR VARSITY High Scorer Award Most Improved Player Award Best Defensive Player Award William Rafuse William Robertson Wayne Jackson BASKETBALL John Rid e William Paulsen lmvp 7 ll I Charles Thomas ' l l .
