Following the war he completed his undergraduate work at Amherst and then served on the faculty there for two years before going to Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. in 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Dibble and their three children have been most welcomed additions to Thompson Island. Mrs. Dibble serves as school librarian. Sandy, their older son, is a sophomore at Amherst College. Ann is a sophomore and Dave a freshman at Thompson. The members of the Senior Class wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Mr. Dibble for his efforts in our behalf and for his faith and confidence in us. .xg . 2 He a Q ki 4 Q , -8 , . MRS. RITA DIBBLE Mrs. Rita Dibble, the charming wife of our new Headmaster, has been one of the most exciting changes in Thompson life in many years. Her energy and enthusiasm have been noticed and felt by all on the island. Her talents of organization have been demonstrated in the library of which she has charge. She has also taken on the responsibility of arranging the decora- tions in the dining hall for our academic and sports banquets. In addition, she is one of the most ardent sports fans, attending virtually all of the games, both at home and away. Mrs. Dibble spent her childhood and most of her school years in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She attended Holyoke High School where she received her diploma and a scholarship to Springfield Museum and Library. We, of the Senior class, wish to extend our warmest appreciation to her for this, her first year at Thompson Academy. ' 1. The 1967-68 Varsity Football team played a series of exciting contests and achieved a successful record under the fine leadership of Head Coach Jon Rose and Assistant Coach David Farr. Our opening game against a strong Milford Academy team ended in a 7-0 defeat. The Home Coming Day crowd of parents and Alumni were treated to a brilliant 64-yard touchdown jaunt by Freddie Shavers which unfortunately was negated by a penalty. The second game with Exeter JV's demonstrated the real potential of our team as we gained our first victory by a score of 24-8. Touchdowns were contributed by Greg York, John Miranda, Freddie Shavers and Mike Cassano. In the third encounter, we easily conquered Roxbury Latin 30-6 with Shavers providing two TD's and Cassano and Craig Ellis each adding one. The next game against Harvard Freshmen B ended with Thompson on the short end of a 24-6 score, however, the score in no way indicates the great spirit and fierce determination of our players. Craig Ellis played brilliantly throughout the game even though Cit was later determinedj he had suffered a broken hand early in the game. Fred Shavers scored our lone touchdown. Providence Country Day provided our third win, 27-8 as Shavers, Cassano, Ed Heath and Bob Tradd each contributed six pointers. Holderness proved a stubborn opponent edging us by an 8-6 score with Cassano getting our only score. The final game against Winchendon was a thriller in the best sense of the term. Trailing at half time by a 20-6 score, Thompson fought back holding the opposition scoreless and adding 16 points to gain a well-deserved 22-20 victory. The coaches and all the players deserve the congratulations and thanks of the entire school for a season well done! The Junior Seahawks completed their 1967 football season with an undefeated record under the able leadership and coaching of Mr. John Horan and his assistant, Gerry Sweeney. With a majority of Sophomores and a handful of Freshmen, this team more than proved themselves. They had a strong offensive line anchored by guards Mark Albertsen and Bud Berard and a good pass receiving line with Steve St. Jock, Dave Dibble, Pearlie Coates, and Tom Knott. A great passing quarterback in Greg King, and running back in Skip Amendolare proved the per- fect balance to be a winner. Against two Junior Varsity teams, Milton Academy C14-143 and Governor Dummer C6-65, the smaller coefficient team completely outplayed them and held them to ties. The top highlight of the season was the comeback win over Belmont Hill. In this game, Belmont completely dom- inated the first half, leading 22-12. Touchdowns in the first half were scored by Tom Knott and Pearlie Coates on passes from Greg King. Starting the second half, a fired up TA team took the opening kickoff and Louis Muniz went 70 yards to score 22-20. The last points Belmont Hill scored were on a touchback 24-20. Then with one minute left in the game, Greg King filled the air with passes, hitting P. Coates, T. Knott, and S. St. Jock and TA moved downfield. With 15 seconds left G. King found S. St. Jock all alone in the end zone for the winning touchdown. TA added the point and earned themselves a very hard but rewarding 28-24 victory. GAMES T. A. 20 Roxbury Latin 0 T. A. 28 Thayer 14 T. The Varsity Basketball team started its season in a disappointing fashion losing two of its first three games. In all fairness, it should be noted that several key players missed the first two encounters due to illness. The team went on to win nine of the remaining ten games. One of the most explosive games this year was that with Thayer Academy. After the first half, Thompson was trailing 23-29. In the second half, the Seahawks exploded and won 65-56. High scorers of that game were Cyril Hodge with 33 points and Tony Albano with 16 points. The final record of ten wins and three losses is one of which the entire team may be proud. Graduation will result in the departure of six Seniors from this year's team: Tony Albano, Allan Brown, Rafael DelValle, Mike Legero, S-teve McAndrew, and Greg York. With two Jun- iors on the starting five, Hodge and Mendez, and three other Juniors, Jackson, McLaughlin, and Miranda, in several victories this year, Coach John Horan feels that he has a fine nucleus to rely on next year. Coach John Horanls hustling Junior Varsity team posted one of the best records at Thomp- son this season with twelve wins and one loss. One of the most stimulating and hard-fought games was with Christian High. At the end of the first half, the Junior Seahawks were trailing 24-29. In the second half with greater effi- ciency in defense and an improvement of offense the Junior Seahawks won 56-53. One of the outstanding plays and the turning point of the game was a three-point pass play, Tommy Hulak to Steve St. Jock to Pearlie Coates, who laid it in. This put us out front in the last two minutes and we were able to stay there. In addition to the previously mentioned players, other individuals who contributed greatly to the outstanding record of this fine team were: Tom Bergeron, Dave Dibble, Greg King, Jim Noon, and Jim Thomas. This year, Thompson Academy started a hockey team under the fine leadership and coaching of Mr. Rose. After weeks of tedious practice the team played their first game. This game was lost to Cushing Academy 9-l. This was the team's first game and they had difficulty working as a unit. Captain Bob Hildebrand scored Thompson's only goal with a twenty foot slap shot. Next the Seahawks met Milton Academy. Again the Seahawks failed to come up with sparkling play as they were defeated 10-O in an exceedingly hard fought battle played on Milton's home ice. In the final game of the season, the boys started to play as a team but they just couldn't seem to keep the puck in Thayer Academy's zone. The Seahawks lost this last encounter 5-2 with Tom Feeney and Robert Hildebrand scoring for Thompson. Peter Cotter played a tremendous game in the nets as he turned back 37 shots. Bob Atkins and Ray Boskovitch played a sparkling game at defense for the team as they repeatedly took the pressure off of our goalie. This was not a suc- cessful season for the team but in one sense it was a start in a sport that we can look forward to having increasing participation and success in the years ahead. GAMES T. After weeks of vigorous training the team journeyed to Winchen- don Academy to participate in the New England Preparatory School Cross Country Champion- ships. Because of their lack of experience, the team was expected to make a poor showing. How- ever, the team did quite well. At the end of the 2.6 mile course the team had established itself as a hard working group determined to do well. Robert Hildebrand, Lawrence Soto, and Dale John- son paced the team to fourteenth place in Class B competition. Frank Warren and Jose Mendez also placed for Thompson.
