We perceived when near attainment of our goal Those Pines were remnants of some other age, That every pine tree was a Titan's soul, Escaped from war such as giants would wage. H It all started back in 1935 on one bright shining September morn when our proud mamas led us by the hand to our first day of SCHOOL. My, didn't we feel big! Our grammar school days were days that we'll never forget. Things like the modeling clay and the blue, red, white, and green report cards in the first gradeg the little store in the second grade and the entrance of Bill Titusg the new cylindrical fire escapesg the little clay beads we madeg those terrible typhoid shotsg the time a representative from each home room threw one shovelful of dirt on a newly planted tree in observance of Arbor Day, and the new girl, Eva Pearl Franklin, in the third gradeg the huge geography booksg the Valentine party Miss Smith gave usg the time the goat ate the cardboard mountains in the Heidi and Peter play, and the first Bible Class ever conducted in the Thomasville School System under the leadership of Miss Majorie Stith in the fourth grade, the fruit showers for the teachers, and the song Bobby Crawford made dear to our hearts, Beer Barrel Polka , in the fifth gradeg the records Miss Milner used to play- The Swan and To A Wild Rose , and the party we waited on for a whole year Qand never hadj in the sixth grade. I just love to reminisce about those days. Remember the first prom party we ever attended? I'll never forget-but I must stop and go on or we'll never get to junior High. PART II Our first days in junior High were little short of chaos. Instead of having one teacher all day long, we had a different teacher for every class. We were given little cards with the classes and room numbers on them, but even they didn't help too much. After the first six weeks we had settled down enough to consider ourselves high school students and the days rolled merrily on. QThe teachers, however, say that we have never settled down and probably never will settle down. Yes, indeed, our lovely little band was the topic of many a faculty meeting.j One time when we were in the eighth grade, Ferrell Gray and John Scarborough wore dresses to school in defiance of the girls' wearing jeans. Mr. Reid called us all to chapel and said that the girls couldn't wear long pants to school any more. In the ninth grade Polly Mann was elected the first girl president. I'll never forget those campaign speeches. We were promised everything from juke boxes in the hall to a holiday every Wednesday. For our graduation, the girls wore their first high heels. It sounded as if a bunch of horses had been turned loose. PART III We entered Senior High awe stricken with tales of how terrible Miss Wertz was. We didn't say one word in her class unless she spoke to us and then we usually didn't know the answer to the question. She must have heard how the juniors and seniors had fright- ened us, for one day she had a little heart-to-heart talk with us, told us a joke on herself, and since then everything has been all right. It was in our junior year that the 'football boys were State Champions, and in the same year the Band and Glee Club took their first trip to Milledgeville for the State Music Festival. Our experiences there would fill a book. When we got home, we started right in on the plans for the junior-Senior, that wonderful formal, that everyone had dreamed of ever since he was so high. At last the day came and we were at the top-we were SENIORS! Our Senior year was filled with things that will always remain crystal clear in our hearts, for it is an experience that no one can take from us. When I think of our Senior year, little things come to mind like the beautiful Christ- mas programs, the formal .dances at Yuletide, the football games, arguments for student government, initiations, class rings, our second Junior-Senior, class night, and finally graduation with its tears and sadness. Yes, it's been a long way, but now that it's all over and we look back, it seems as though it were not long enough. We have enjoyed every second of our twelve years, and to the new seniors we bid adieu and hope that their history will be filled with times equally as enjoyable as ours.
