HJORT ANNIQ Atom' Drum Major , ' ROY BIQATY I 1 S l 1 ,.-Ib Beginning with but Six students in September, 1936, the band made its debut in chapel on Decem- ber 7th with 16 members. On April 2nd with the glee club and orchestra the band gave its first pub- lic performance. Participating in the State Music Contest in Savannah on April 16th, the band won three Hrst divisions and one second division. Music was furnished for Class Night, thus starting a tradi- tion that has continued. In 1937-'38 the band furnished music for foot- ball games, Kiwanis luncheon, Santa Claus parade, Memorial Day exercises, second district music fes- tival, National Contest, Concert at Vashti, Legion Parade, opening of baseball season and various con- ccrts. In 1938-'39 the band in uniforms for the Hrst time performed at football games, Legion Armistice Day parade, Rose Show, Santa Claus parade, Legion dinner, district contest, state contest, national con- test, opening of baseball season, and several concerts. The band participated in the year 1939-'40 in foot- ball games, Santa Claus parade, district Music Con- test, State Music Contest, opening of baseball season, Rose Show, Greater Albany Celebration, Legion Armistice Day parade, dedication of Municipal Auditorium, and different concerts. In 1940-'41 the band furnished music for foot- ball games, Armistice Day parade, Santa Claus parade, concert for milk fund, and also Rotary con- certs at Bainbridge, Thomasville, and Valdosta. ln addition it has been our yearly custom to furnish players for the All-State Band. Besides the usual activities participated in by the band each year, the band agreed to furnish the American Legion the musical portion of their month- ly meetings for the entire year. These programs were played by the small groups and soloists of the organization. In all of the concerts and programs played this year, patriotic music was featured. 1942-'43. Due to conditions and transportation the band canceled its annual fall concert. However, it played all home football games and two games away from home-Bainbridge and Moultrie. Patri- otic work has been the chief consideration of the band this year. It has played for army convoys passing through Thomasville, Armistice Day parade, parades of the Georgia State Guard, as well as the annual Santa Claus parade. The band has continued its program each semester in both the senior and junior high schools featuring novelty numbers. The over- ture, entre, act, and finale of the glee club operetta will be played by the band this year. Members of the band have furnished many numbers for the serv- ice clubs this year. Due to the war all contests have been called off for the duration.
