CLASS HISTORY With heads held high and dauntless spirits the class of 1954 entered Thomasville High School. Try as we might, there was no Way of keeping the upperclassmen from knowing how scared we were. It was during our freshman year that we elected Sybil Hinkle, Gary Sherrill, Kathryn Jones, and Tommy Brackett as our class oflicers. Also, we had the distinction of being the largest of the four classes, numbering 156. One of the greatest losses was that of Hardy Henry, head football coach to Uncle Sam's Marines. As sophomores we joined the ranks of the ex- perienced and laughed at the frosh, although we still felt secretly insecure. Sybil Hinkle was chosen as runner-up to Betty Ann Warner at the annual Growler Dance. Sybil also headed the Bulldogettes as one of their co-captains. It was at the close of this year that Gary Sherrill was elected Vice-President of the Stu- dent Council. By the time our junior year had arrived, we had begun to feel like old-timers. Sybil Hinkle was again chosen President of our class with Gary Curly Sherrill serving as veep, Jackie Primm, secretary, and Betty Ann Lord, treasurer. We also regained Mr. Henry to our staff to assist Coach J. C. McLain. This year was made memorable in the defeat of Lexington by our gridiron squad. In December a member of the class of '54 again starred. Sybil Hinkle was elected Miss Thomasville Highi' at the Growler Dance. Facts and Fun for the fourth time won a first- place rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Surpassing all previous sales, the class of '54 set a record in the junior magazine drive. Then we were introduced to the techniques of writing a term paper. But then, those circlets with the bulldog crest arrived and we were bound to T.H.S. forever by our long-awaited class rings. Delegated to Boys' and Girls' State were Gary Sherrill, Richard York, Frank Huggins, Cateen Hodgin, and Sybil Hinkle. The highlight of our junior year came on the night of April 24. The theme Deep Purple was used for our junior-senior prom. Decorating for this big event only added to the thrill of the prom itself. And then-in a twinkling almost-we were seniors. The journey from awed freshmen to erudite seniors was reaching its climax. Robert Tugboat Farrington was class president. Presi- dent of the Student Council was Gary Sherrill while Imogene Poole, another of our classmates served as secretary. Heading our publications staf were David Myers, editor and Sybil Davis, business manager of Facts and Fung Kathryn Jones and Bobby Stevenson held top positions of the Growler staH. Kathryn Jones was crowned as queen of the Homecoming Game. Donniese McCarson was crowned Miss Football of 1953. Both girls were members of our class. Marian Dickens was chosen D.A.R. Girl. This year the Mills Home football team combined with ours to give us a more powerful team. This combination helped to give us one of the best cooperating teams we have had. On December 17 Kathryn Jones was chosen as Miss Thomasville High at the annual Growler Dance with Ann Jester and Jackie Primm as runners-up. These girls were added attractions to our class. The senior class chose as its colors powder blue and dark blue with white carnations as our class flower. God first, others second, self last was selected as our motto. We shall look back with fond memories on the junior-senior prom, the senior play, and perhaps the greatest moment of our lives-graduation. With humble hearts we say thank you to our sponsors through the years for helping us along the way. Our appreciation to them and to Mr. Horton is so great that we have no alternative except to make them proud of us and to know their efforts to make us better citizens were not in vain. We say farewell to Thomasville High School, but we shall remember it with love and gratitude. And whenever we review the memories of our schooldays in the scrapbook of our minds, there'll be a tugging at our heartstrings for the things that are gone forever. Imogene Poole Historian
