CLASS Four years seems like a long time, but to the class of i953 the four years in Thomasville High School passed all too quickly. Memory spans the years, however, as we look back over our high school careers. As freshmen, adapting ourselves to our new role as high school students was the major task. Highlight of the year was the winning of the South Piedmont conference championship by the T. H. S. boys' basket- ball team. Other events concerning our class were the election of Ruth Gray, Shirley Burrus, Sandra Jarrett, and Ann Allmond to serve as cheerleaders and the recognition gained by Charles Dickens, who won the local high school Soil Conservation speaking contest. As sophomores we became more active in work of the student council, high school publications, and clubs. Several of the class also entered into sports' activities. Nancy Stilwell was elected Miss Thomas- ville High School of l95l. Remembered most from the standpoint of studies were our first big themes on alcohol and experi- ences in biology classes. ln all aspects our busiest year came next. As juniors we at last were upperclass- men and ready to take the spotlight as student leaders. Class president was Freddy Perdue. That year members of our class were in- ducted not only into extracurricular clubs but also into the two honorary organiza- tions of the school. Officers of clubs, more cheerleaders, and majorettes were picked from this year's graduating class. FACTS and FUN received for the third time a first place rating from the Columbia Scholastic P re ss Association. Both the editor, Ann Allmond, and the business manager, Sylvia Beck, were members of our class. Climbing the ladder of success, Charles Dickens again brought honor to this class by winning first place in North Carolina in a national essay contest. On the other hand, many of our class members gained recognition in the sports' spotlight. We topped all previous sales' records during thegannual magazine drive. The year of hard work also found us busy with H l4 ISTORY the inevitable term papers. United States History class was our most remembered class. With the arrival of class rings we were recognized as a permanent part of T. H. S. Boys' and Girls' State delegates were Charles Dickens, Jimmy Johnson, Ann Holladay, and Sylvia Beck. A fitting climax to that highly success- ful year was the junior-senior prom. The theme of this highlighted affair was Moon- light and Roses. Before we realized it, we were seniorsl It was the last year for high school honors and achievement of goals. Tommy Ward was president of our class. Elected to rep- resent the seniors as D. A. R. Girl was Sylvia Beck. Other individuals gained honors on the sports' fields as notable athletes, in class- rooms as outstanding students, and in clubs and other extracurricular activities as leaders. Among activities to be remembered as seniors were the junior-senior prom, the election of superlatives, Kid's Day, and the senior play. The biggest moment in our high school careers is yet to come: gradua- tion. We also actively participated in the cele- bration of Thornasville's Centennial during our senior year. As we look back over the road traveled from unknown freshmen to senior leaders, we feel something that cannot be expressed in words. No longer do we feel inferior, but we feel secure and eager as we search for our positions in life. Now as our castles of hope near completion, we have not finished but just begun. Ann Allmond Historian
