Tfggvf , W Mission ' A 9 The primary mission of an LSD is to transport and launch combat loaded amphibious craft and vehicles in amphibious assault over enemy beaches, to function as Primary Control Ship for these assaults, and to provide docking and repair facilities. To accomplish this mission, LSD's are designed to carry various combinations of landing craft and assault vehicles. A well deck 396 feet long and 48 feet in width can be flooded to a depth of 10 feet by opening the sterngate and pumping sea water into special ballast tanks. This permits the entry of assault craft and boats into the well, after which the water is pumped out of the ballast tanks leaving these craft in a drydocked condition. The provision of portable ramps from the well deck to intermediate decks enhances the basic flexibility of the load an LSD may carry. A large superdeck aft is used for helicopter operations.
