CAPTAIN WALTER I. WALLIS, USN COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Walter 1. Wallis was born in Los Angeles, Califor- nia. An NROTC graduate of the University of Southern Califor- nia, he was commisioned as an Ensign in June 1961. His first assignment was aboard the USS NAVARRO CAPA- 215J, followed by attendance-at the Naval Destroyer School After serving on the USSIVMLES C. FOX CDD-8295 as Weap- ons and Engineering Officer, Captain Wallis reported to Ameri- can University where he received a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations. EXECUTIVE OFFICER Commander Arthur James Gilbert is from Roselle Park, New Jersey. He joined the Navy in June 1967. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy he reported to USS RUPERTUS CDD 8513 in Long Beach California as Weapons Division Officer from December 1967 to December 1969. After serving as Operations Officer in NADVGR USMC Vietnam from January 1970 to January 1971, he was transfered to Fleet Training Group Staff where he served as Weapons Readiness Instructor from March 1971 to February 1972. He reported to USS REASONER where he served as the Weapons Officer from February 1972 to February 1975. He served as Naval Science Instructor in FLTSWTRACENPAC from March 1975 to March 1977. In August 1977 Commander Gilbert reported to USS LEAHY CCG-165 where he served as the ship's Engineer until April 1980. He then received orders to USS THOMASTON and reported aboard on April 16, 1980. Commander Gilbert's decorations and awards include RVN Staff Service Honor Award, Navy Commendation Award, Vietnam Campaign and Service Awards, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Achievement Award and the 1967 President's 100 Pistol Award. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Gilbert of La Jolla, California. He is married to the former Carol Ann Fenton. They have 3 sons Zachary, Garett, and Aaron. They reside in Ramona, California.
