L PLANTE .lohn Baptiste Laplante was born in St. Joseph, Missou- ri, on 5 June, l940 Following graduation from Severn School in Annapolis he attended the U.S. Na val Academy. He was commissioned in .lune l962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. His initial sea duty was in USS D. H. FOX IDD-7792, in Atlantic Fleet destroyer, as CIC Officer. Following a tour as a student at the U.S. Na val Destroyer School he served in two Pacific Fleet destroyers. USS SAMPLE CFF-lO48j as Operations Officer and USS DUNCAN CDDR-8742 as Weapons Officer. In December l958, Commander l.aPlante took com- mand of USS SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CLST-ll22j, home- ported at Guam. SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY was inactivat- ed in September l969, and Commander LaPlante 's next assignment was as Commanding Officer of a sister ship, USS FLOYD COUNTY KLST-762j homeported in San Diego. He next reported to the U.S. Na val Academy, where he served in the office of the Commandant of Midshipmen. This was followed in June l972 by a tour at the U.S. Na val War College as a student in the College of Naval Com- mand and Staff. During this tour he earned a Master of Science Degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University. In September l973 he returned to the Pacific Fleet as Executive Officer in USS SAN BERNARDINO KLST-ll89j. He was then ordered to the staff of the Commander, Na val Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, where he served as Current Operations Officer during l975 and as Aide and Flag Lieutenant from February l976 until February l978. He reported aboard USS THOMAS TON fl.SD-282 for duty as Commanding Officer in May l978. Commander LaPlante is married to the former Phyllis Elaine DeBartolo of Youngstown, Ohio.
