fireman stood around the railing The train had one passenger car behind This was wooden looking like a large oblong box on four wheels with the sides taken out It had a roof supported by beams running up the sides It was connected with the locomotive by a chain which allowed a considerable amount of play between them Of course the tracks were wooden The horse was a fine black racer and ex cited to go Its jockey was a negro boy He was dressed in a satin suit of purple and red and his face was already damp with beads of perspiration Mr Drury gave a humph and climbed into the train He was sery dignified tn his manner He lifted the tails of his coat so as not to sit on them and settled back with his arms on his chest Hts air was one of cer tatnty that the train would lose and this whole idea prove preposterous The ttmekeeper raised his gun tn the air and pulled the trigger The shot rang out and the horse and locomottye started off Peggy waved her parasol to her father and also to Tom The locomotive snorted puffed and blew the whistle It looked to the people like a big dragon on wheels A few children cried and clung to their moth ers skirts while others looked on with pride and excitement Ihe train and horse were going pretty fast now 'Ihe trains speed was almost three ml s an hour anl the horse not far ahetd Alter the locomotive and horse hid gone by the grove of trees they were out of sight of the people at the starting place but there were small groups of people here and there along the tracks waiting to see the race. As the train was picking up more speed now it was nearing the horse. Those who could sie. were shouting and jumpng up and down wit excitement. Then as the racers came to another grove of trees the tr'in passed the torss. The men in the train became more excited. for now. once the locomotive had gotten ahead it ctuld stay there if all went we . .LISI as t e train came to a clearing. .1 terrible catastrophe occurred. The driving- axles which communicate th: motion of the coanecting ro ls broke. giving the train a ter- rili: ie-rk then stopping. Nlr Drury was thrown from his seat onto the floor and one of the heayv seats fell on his legs He was knocked unconscious at once Immediately men ran to his rescue Ihey were very much distressed Of all the men on the train why did tt hase to be Sam to get hurt' said one The men pulled Mr Drury from under the seat and carried htm outside Get a doctor someone hurry This man his got a broken leg and cant be mowed shouted one of the men But how can we get 1 doctor said another Its almost four miles back to Rtdgeton and with no horse Vee cant possibly get one near here Irom out of the mob of anxious men stepped Tom Axerv Please let me try my chtnces of ldxtng the engine he pleaded The men scoffed at his idea but the fireman sit lt will do no harm for tm to try Maybe if he can hx the train we can back tt tip inl get the doctor one of the onlookers If we dont hurry Tom grabbed the tool box from the locomo ttse and went to work He seemed to know what to do becaus hed been reading about sttch things tn his snare lime In less than fif teen minutes Tom had got the axle back tn place ind the engine wis ready to go baek for the doctor The horse wasnt tn st ht any where vet The engine st rted off ba kwarls but eottld make just as good lime that way In the meantime the engineer left word to the people that when the horse came by to stop htm ttnttl they could go on again together lhey thought this to he no more than fttr XX hen the spectators. ba:k at the starting ace aw hc tr'in comin towarls thent backwards they were all very much ama7el. l eggy was one of the many who hurriel tip te t e side of the engine to inqu're.
