Life is new to it. It doesn't know what it is. Time has just begun for it. It has no questions. It cannot ask. Love is a stranger; Hate unknown. On this rock a mother sits. What the mother is and knows, Is what the child will be. The child has no choice. It never has, It is born, It is alive. What will it be? All the luck in the world, QjLrrutAb Ci, Editor-in-Chief 2 Every year the senior class dedicates the yearbook to a person who has gained respect from the class, shared memories with the class, and also who will have a lasting influence onus. Therefore, the class of 1977 proudly dedicates their yearbook to Mr. William McClay. 3 Special Thanks TO MR. My life is like a walk along the beach, As near the ocean's edge as I can go. MARYANN CHANDLER Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow; It only saps today of its PATRICIA M. BOYLAN strength.'' Be who you must, that is part of the plan. Await your arrival with simple survival, and one day we’ll all understand. SANDRA LEE BEARDSLEE To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle; and never stop fighting. BRUCE DAY When I was young I used to think that the only certain thing about life was that I was some day going to die. CHRISTINE E. DePECOL Now the wind is still In a moment it will be raging. Now my soul is young In a moment it will be aging. SANDRA M. DUNN Happiness doesn't only come from doing what you like to do, but from learning to like what you have to do. THERESA L. DOMINGUE True friendship comes when silence between two people is comfortable.” RAE ANN DUFFY What you are - I once was, What I am - you will soon be. ELAINE M. EVERETT I consider the day a total loss, if I don't catch Hell for something. KAREN LYNN FOSTER There is a destiny which makes us brothers; All that we send into the lives of others; comes back into our own. SCOTT MICHAEL FOSTER Be good and you will be lonesome. I'm not lonesome. LORI ANN FOURNIER Wise men have often said, Life's joy and misery walk hand in hand and keep each other company.'' JOANNE L. FUSCO ROBIN GAGNE You only have one life. Live it for yourself.! JOHN D. FOX Let tomorrow take care of tomorrow. ’ ’ JOHN GAGNON A little inaccuracy serves a world of explanation. 12 The best moments in life are those shared with the ones you love. ” ROY GANGLOFF Live for today, while dreaming of your life tomorrow. TODD ARTHUR HAYWARD And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make. LYNNE M. HAWKSLEY Enjoy life while you can because if you don't you’ll regret it.” JAMES C. HOWE You and I are but yesterdays; The Earth of the past come to flesh. Eroded by Times river, to the shapes we now possess. ERIC PETER GROHOSKI Many people are so afraid to die, that they never begin to live. ’' KATHERINE HOTCHKISS So if you find yourself in need listen to these words of heed. Be a giant, or a grain of sand, words of wisdom, yes I can. 13 JAMES M. HOYT As we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul, there walks a lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold.” JOHN F. JABLONSKI Everything is funny as long as it is happening to someone else. ” STANLEY W. HULBERT JR. There are many ways to achieve failure, but not trying is the most unsuccessful. BRIAN DAVID JACQUES Money is like an arm or a leg, either you use it or you lose it. NANCY E. HYLAND I am what lam.” DONNA JOHNSTON By your smile you can change another’s life; By a word you can bring peace out of strife; Then lift your head and never say die; Count every blessing, stop every sigh. u DORENE G. JOHNSTON There is only one success - to be able to spend your life in your own way. RALPH LAPIO If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. REGINA L. JOHNSTON There’s only one solution; 'tis simply stated thus; A little less of you or me and lots more of us. MARK LEWANDOWSKI 1 think - therefore I am - I think. PAUL D. KNOX He who stays in the valley will never get over the Hill. TOM LATINA You must begin by knowing that you have already arrived. 15 TINA LYONS I am and can be what I make myself. ” MELINDA M. MAHAR It’s the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were. THOMAS LYONS I’ve been thinkin' about all the places we've surfed and danced and all the faces we've missed so let's get together and DO IT AGAIN. MARCIA MENDICINO I only ask that what I know should not be denied me now. As it's been earned and I have seen, my life belongs to me. My love belongs to who can see it. NORMA LUNDBERG And may I have the listening ear that helps dispel all doubt and fear. In days of uncertainty, Lord, help me. DANIEL J. MARTONE Wouldn't it be nice if we were older, then we wouldn't have to wait so long; and wouldn’t it be nice to live together in a kind of world where we belong.” 16 DAVID N. MARTONE When I die, I will go to Heaven, Because I have served the last twelve years in Hell. BRIDGET OLIVER Only a life lived for others is a life worth living. MARY LOU PAVIO All of fate's a chance, the future none can see, The road we leave behind, ahead lies mystery. 17 NICHOLAS PERNICIARO III Freedom is nice to have. So I say you’ll only live once and I’ll live it all. I made it! ” NANCY JEAN PISCOPO It's only the giving that makes you what you are.” JOYCE S. PIERPONT We need to have people who mean something to us knowing that being with them means coming home. SUZANNE E. PIZZO Tomorrow may rain so I’ll follow the sun. LYNN ANN PIOTROWSKI Love is the key we must turn, Truth is the flame we must burn. Freedom the lesson we must learn.” -V I I SCOTT POTTER If you don't succeed try, try again.” 18 NICHOLAS V. SAMELA I rise from bed each morning not because I am dissatisfied with it, but because I can not carry it with me. JUDITH MAE SANDFORD The better part of one's life consists of his friendships. JOHN SCHEPPARD Rise and shine for we are all children of the universe, and only together will we reach the stars, find the answers, and the mystery of life. 19 WILLIAM R. RYAN Rockne wanted only bad losers; Good losers get into the habit of losing. HOLLY M. ROY DENISE A. RAINVILLE And so my fantasies become realities, and I must be what I must be and face tomorrow. In friendship we see only those faults which may be prejudicial to our friends. In love we see no faults but those suffered by us. JAMIE JEAN SHYPINKA I shall not pass this way again. Any good thing that I can do, let me do it now! For I shall not pass this way again. TERRY ROGER SIMPSON There are three sides to every argument your side, their side, and the right side. ’' 20 CATHERINE A. STEPHENS Human happiness is from not so much the great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as little advantages that happen every day. KARLA S. SUCKLEY The rainbow is more beautiful than the pot at the end of it, because the rainbow is now. And the pot never turns out to be quite what I expected. JAMES PAUL SKRZYPIEC Life is a preparation for the future; and the best preparation for the future is to live as if there were none.'' DAVID VanHAASTEREN Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out after it. DIANE M. VIETS Friends are like bracelet charms. If you truly love and enjoy your friends, they are part of a golden circle that makes life good.'' ERNEST WOODS We only go through life once so live life to its fullest. JANICE VOLOVSKI Like Columbus in the olden days we must gather all our courage, sail our ships out on the open sea, Cast away our fears and all the years will come and go and take us up - always up. REBECCA JEAN WOODS A well-adjusted person is one who makes the same mistake twice without getting nervous. NANCY-LYNN WILSON We have chatted daily together, enjoyed the very same things. Had lots of rainy weather, but know what sunshine brings. Whatever life may choose to send, I hope to keep you my good friend. 2t HUCKLE” Track . . . Cross Country . . . Young Life . . . Hey Samela!! 1977 32 1977 CLASS PRESIDENT To the Class of 1977, To enjoy and to be enjoyed, to pretend and to be pretended to, to listen and to be listened to, to learn and to be taught, to experience and to be experienced, to love and to be loved, to grow and to be grown is to truly live! You the students, the people, have made the Class of 1977. You have given it your strength to survive and nourished it from your hearts to enjoy. Although high school may seem like your entire past, it is but a flash of light in the brightness of a lifetime. It is a memory, an experience, of what has been. Now we must look onward, not backward, we are now beyond and we all must move forward and live a full rich life as we know it to be individually as seen in our hearts. I give to you my hopes that you shall conquer your dreams and dream on. Supply the strength exhibited as a class, as a generation for not only Thoma-ston to grow on, but the whole world. It has been indeed a privilege and honor to have lead the Class of 1977. 1 wish you all good-luck, God Bless You, and all the happiness in the world! With my sincerest hopes of success, Janice Volovski In Memory of Billy Johnpiere The sky is like the sea, It's far beyond our touch. We cannot see the end, But we would like to so much. Hardly a man. Watching the seniors. And starting to dream, Of how I would look. And how it would seem. But here I am now, Looking how it began, And how it was. Am I now a man? So many firsts, Have happened so fast. They were all so fun, How 1 wish they would last. The very first time, That I had driven a car, It was only yesterday, It wasn't that far. And I’m now looking back, And I reminisce. Of that very first person, Of that very first kiss. And I'm looking again. At how I look now, And where am I going? Will 1 get there; how? Now I'm really that person, Once just a dream, And my high school days, Went too fast it seems. And I look upon them, And I almost must cry, They are so beautiful. Why must they die? But I stand now proud, So glad to be here. And I will never forget, These days, so dear. The Beach Boys Researching February, 1977 86 87 88 90 Donkey Basketball 92 The Seniors Halloween October, 1976 94 96 97 98 YEARBOOK, 1977 Findings based on analyses of several hundred young people, first at age seventeen and then at age thirty-four, showed that successful adults are self-educating, psychologically mature, easy and open with others and believe in their own competence. Those who were most successful, could express feelings and emotions, knew their own strengths and weaknesses, and had the capacity to identify with others. Your future promises a highly competitive and rapidly changing job market, demanding a broad education with emphasis on interpersonal skills as well as technical ability. The important traits of intellectual curiosity (the desire for continuous learning throughout your life), logical thinking, the ability to learn from experience and the ability to get along with others are significant qualities that make a difference in the long run. When you leave Thomaston High School to enter higher education and or the world of work, hopefully, you will want to continue to grow in the ability to think rationally, to express your thoughts clearly, and to read and listen with understanding throughout your life. We sincerely hope that the Thomaston Public School system has helped you develop some of these abilities mentioned above and that you will be sensitive to the need to refine them and to keep on learning so that you will be able to cope with life's problems as a successful and competent adult. Dr. Marvin H. Yaffe Superintendent of Schools THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE You have the RESPONSIBILITY of meeting responsibilities with each of your rights and freedoms. Thomas Jefferson was thinking of the opportunity to seek life, liberty and happiness when he listed them as rights. He knew that they could not be guaranteed to anybody. However, we are bom seekers and we should have the right to search for the very best in life. The right to own property as your private property, which you so legally develop, means that no one shall forbid that right. Being a responsible person is closely related to being self-reliant. S. Smiles states, The spirit of self-help is the root of all genuine growth in the individual; and, exhibited in the lives of many, it constitutes the true source of national vigor and strength. Help from without is often enfeebling in its effects, but help from within invariably invigorates. Bovee states, Doubt whom you will, but never doubt yourself. Responsibilities are also closely related to duties. One's vocation is never some distant possibility. It is always the simple round of duties which every passing hour brings. The reward of one duty done is the will to fulfill another. Theodore Parker states, Let us do our duty in our shop or our kitchen; in the market, the street, the office, the school, the home, just as faithfully as if we stood in the front rank of some great battle, and knew that victory depended on our bravery, strength and skill. When we do that, the humblest of us will be serving in that great army which achieves the welfare of the world. It has been said that no person is free who is not master of his or her self. True freedom consists of the observance of law. J. S. Mill states, The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good, in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. As our Bicentennial Year comes to a close may I ask you to ever keep in mind the introduction to our Constitution for the United States of America; We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. To each of YOU, members of the CLASS of 1977, I wish good health, happiness in achieving your goals, and a full peace of mind through meet-.ing your responsibilities. Herbert W. DeVeber Principal 99 It’s graduation and it’s unbelievable that I’m here. They’ll call my name in a few minutes, and I’ll walk up to receive my diploma . . . where do I go from there? I’ve always had the security of the school routine and its activities, surrounded by the friends I was so familiar with. Now we’ll all be going in different directions, and I wonder how long it will be before the memories that meant so much start to fade. After twelve years of this you would think I would be ready to move on, but I feel like I’m leaving a part of me behind. Maybe that’s good though, because I I'eally have changed in the three years that I’ve been here. Well, pretty soon they’ll get to my name. Then I’ll be up there, and it’ll be all over. In a way, I guess everything’s really just beginning. V I A 100 Autographs Best Wishes REYNOLDS CARBIDE DIE CO. INC. 27 Reynolds Bridge Rd. 203-283-9913 XXV VI-ARMS REST. D. M.
