Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1975 volume:

Foreword Thomaston is a small town. We have been afforded the luxury of small town intimacy while being exposed to the problems of nearby cities. When the class of ’75 leaves the sheltered halls of Thomaston High it will be cast in the midst of harsh times. Go in peace with high hopes and when you pause in your hectic lives remember fondly the years reflected within this book. 2 2 Sallyanne Lewis Editor-in-Chief To Mr. Bouffard whose friendliness and good humor has made this senior year richly rewarding, for joining in our joys and sorrows, for understanding the catastrophes of youth. We, the class of 1975, with deep appreciation and pride — dedicate our book to you. 3 Table of Contents Foreword..................................2 Dedication............................... R Superintendent's Message It is increasingly clear to me that you cannot predict with certainty what life holds for you in respect to changes and challenges. You can decide, to some degree, what subjects in high school will help you, but it is folly to try to predict the circumstances of your life. You don’t know what the future may demand of you relative to needed skill and understanding nor do you know what opportunities for fulfillment the future may offer. Many of you have prepared yourselves far better for that unknown future because you studied a variety of courses at Thomaston High School. You explored subjects in which you exercised your skill and judgment. As you go through life you will find that the path ahead narrows. Therefore, it is well for you to continue to look around, test yourself in a number of fields, explore your interests and abilities. What you got from Thomaston High School depends on what you brought to it in interest and imagination. Through fine elementary and high school faculty members, you became familiar with human knowledge and experience, human skill and understanding, and human hope. Whether you go on to higher education or go directly to the world of work, I hope that Thomaston High School has helped you to live more fully as a human being. Dr. Marvin H Yaffe Superintendent of Schools Principal's Message WHAT WILL BF YOUR ATTITUDE? Mr. Walter B. Wriston, Chairman Citicorp, stated in a speech given to the Commercial Club of Boston, Much has been written and said about the mood of our country today. We are told that the traditional American sense of optimism has been replaced by doubt and gloom and that our expectations are now best summed up by Paul Valery when he said, 'Even the future is not what it used to be’.” Mr. Wriston points out the media is one reason why the future seems so pessimistic. In some of our newspapers we now and then see a column headed News Isn’t All Bad. However, most of the time our headlines present the bad news. It would seem we lack a balance of the good and bad news which is essential to our being hopeful and optimistic. Our country has faced many troubles and crises throughout its history. The media many times seem to report and then to prophesy negatively or pessimistically. We need more testimony to the greatness of our peoples and our democratic form of government. One good idea by one thinking individual is worth more than a gun or a law aimed at forcing men to blindly take actions. Whether it be an energy or economic crisis we need to think for ourselves and truly believe in ourselves. Great enterprise begins with and takes its first forward step in faith. One thing that keeps us all going is that we view our own means of earning our daily bread as an important contribution to our world. It is easy to be critical. The real test is to come up with constructive alternatives. The person who wants to help himself can only do so by helping others. One of the many successful men who have used this principle was James G Penney. He started with a small general merchandise store and built a multi-billion dollar business on the principle of always treating a customer as he himself would want to be treated. Yes, each of you in the CLASS of 1975 face the challenge of skepticism and deceitfulness! Do look up, think for yourself and know right from wrong. Be kind to yourself and those around you. I wish you many future rewarding and happy years. 96 Herbert W.
