Superintendent 's Message We made every effort at Thomaston High School to provide a more relevant environment in which you could be stimulated to discover yourselves and learn more about the world out there. You grappled with the problems you found in yourselves and in this world. Through these exercises you were able to develop strengths, skills, and concerns which inspire you to continue striving for personal and social growth. If school is to be meaningful for youth, it must be interlaced with the fabric of life. At THS we could merely play at copying life. Better education will happen, though, if we see school as a real introduction to life, and not just a preparation for it. Encountering reality, whether in or out of school, makes people want to learn and live. Your excellent teachers realize this and sought rich experiences for you. My best wishes for your future happiness and success go with you in whatever you undertake. Dr. Marvin H. Yaffe Superintendent of Schools Principal's Message To you. The CLASS of 1971, I give the challenge of P-O, which represents PRIDE with OPTIMISM. In the days facing you, the more pride and optimism you have, the more you will be assured success and happiness in each of your endeavors. There are different ways of interpreting the definitions of pride. Generally speaking, for any person to take pride” in his accomplishments he must have pride in himself. A man named Cotton once said, Of all marvellous things, perhaps there is nothing that angels behold with such supreme astonishment os a proud man. Optimism is the belief that everything in life happens for the best. It is the inclination to look on the best side of things. We know that this is the opposite of pessimism. L. M. Child once said in part, “You find yourself refreshed by the presence of cheerful people. Why not make earnest effort to confer that pleasure on others?” No one's life is enriched by the pessimist. As you take pride and are optimistic, effective communication will take place between you and other people whether they be older or younger. From this successful communicating with each other, mutual respect, trust, and tolerance will develop. You will start to listen more and speak less. Now you have finished your Senior year here at Thomaston High School. I wish you many enjoyable and rewarding years ahead. Do continue to take pride in all your efforts. Look up, stand tall, and be ever optimistic. Herbert W. DeVeber Principal
