Superintendent’s Message The 1965-66 school year came and once again Thomaston’s students were acquiring skills necessary for a life of continuous learning. For some seniors we find that the end of the school year represents a culmination of true friends and familiar way9. When many of you entered Thomaston Junior-Senior High School, it was only natural to view the school as overwhelming hut found that, as soon as you learned your way around, everything became quite normal; that you were one student among peers, teachers and other personnel to complete the scene in an institution of learning. You were exposed to challenging subjects and participated in special activities, some of which included: 1. First seventh-grade class to vote for class officers, 2. Biology trip to the Peabody Museum, 3. Junior class trip to the United Nations, 4. Junior Prom—“Brigadoon”, 5. Class night 6. Classmates visited Switzerland and West Germany, 7. Senior Ball—“Christmas Carousel”. The challenges offered and knowledge gained during your years in the classroom served to prepare you to someday fill a responsible role in society with a good chance of satisfaction to yourself and to others. The preparation has been best, of course, for those who have invested the greatest effort. We hope that the educational environment at Thomaston High School has helped you become aware of your own possibilities, has encouraged you to want to be better informed and use your intelligence to understand the world in which you live and the people who share your global habitat, has enabled you to develop your mental resources for a life of continuous learning, has helped you become an educated citizen who acts upon an unswerving loyalty to democratic ideals, and has provided you with personal inspiration. Dr. Marvin H. Yaffe Superintendent of Schools Today we are supposed to be guided and motivated by many different mottoes, slogans, and jingles. We are advised to buy this, do that, and go there. Printed advertisements, as well as radio and television commercials, challenge our attention and our critical judgment. You, the Senior Class of 1966, must not allow yourselves to be confused by conflicting statements. Each of you should test these assertions for true source and comparison. How do they relate to your needs? Will they benefit you mentally and physically? Could possible harm come to you from accepting them as true statements? Some people place placards on a wall or have a framed motto on a desk. However, what counts are the words by which they live. If the motto says, “Smile,” and they carry a frown; or “Do it now, and they procrastinate then these mottoes have no meaning. Those people are hypocritical and need to search for the truth because they say one thing and then do the opposite. Though our world seems materialistic today, people still want to help each other. It has been determined that it takes seventy-two muscles to frown and only fourteen to smile. Being considerate of the feelings of others will always be appreciated. It is true that what counts most in life is what we do for others. As you move forward one big step in 1966, do face the world to serve and give of your talents. We have heard, and will continue to hear, how necessary it is for man to find peace with all mankind. Ralph Waldo Emerson states, “Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” With you and me and all other working toward the goal of peace, it shall happen. Yes, it may seem far away. Yet, Browning writes, “Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?” I congratulate each of you for earning your Thomaston High School diploma. Together with your folks and your friends, I am proud of your accomplishments. We encourage you to go forward. Look upward, listen critically, and act thoughtfully. Herbert W. DeVeber, Principal 5
