1 - : presents The 1966 Owl Volume XLV Thomaston High School Thomaston, Connecticut '-ay Foreword As editor of the 1966 Owl it gives me great pleasure to take you on a tour through the halls of Thomaston High School. Take your time, relax, and make the most of the pictures, writeups, and events that are here before you.. It is here that you will recall your fondest memories. X Editor-In-Chief Table of Contents Faculty ........................ 3 Dedication ..................... 4 Seniors ........................ 9 Underclassmen...................37 Activities .....................43 Athletics ......................61 FACULTY TO RAYMOND GIANNAMORE whose friendliness and good humor have made your classes both enjoyable and memorable, whose sincere interest in preparing us for the future’s challenges and to make us better citizens, and whose devoted guidance in sports has made him a teacher, a coach, and a friend, whom we will long remember. We the Class of 1966, with great pride and appreciation dedicate our yearbook to you, our Mr. G. Superintendent’s Message The 1965-66 school year came and once again Thomaston’s students were acquiring skills necessary for a life of continuous learning. For some seniors we find that the end of the school year represents a culmination of true friends and familiar way9. When many of you entered Thomaston Junior-Senior High School, it was only natural to view the school as overwhelming hut found that, as soon as you learned your way around, everything became quite normal; that you were one student among peers, teachers and other personnel to complete the scene in an institution of learning. You were exposed to challenging subjects and participated in special activities, some of which included: 1. First seventh-grade class to vote for class officers, 2. Biology trip to the Peabody Museum, 3. Junior class trip to the United Nations, 4. Junior Prom—“Brigadoon”, 5. Class night 6. Classmates visited Switzerland and West Germany, 7. Senior Ball—“Christmas Carousel”. The challenges offered and knowledge gained during your years in the classroom served to prepare you to someday fill a responsible role in society with a good chance of satisfaction to yourself and to others. The preparation has been best, of course, for those who have invested the greatest effort. We hope that the educational environment at Thomaston High School has helped you become aware of your own possibilities, has encouraged you to want to be better informed and use your intelligence to understand the world in which you live and the people who share your global habitat, has enabled you to develop your mental resources for a life of continuous learning, has helped you become an educated citizen who acts upon an unswerving loyalty to democratic ideals, and has provided you with personal inspiration. Dr. Marvin H. Yaffe Superintendent of Schools Today we are supposed to be guided and motivated by many different mottoes, slogans, and jingles. We are advised to buy this, do that, and go there. Printed advertisements, as well as radio and television commercials, challenge our attention and our critical judgment. You, the Senior Class of 1966, must not allow yourselves to be confused by conflicting statements. Each of you should test these assertions for true source and comparison. How do they relate to your needs? Will they benefit you mentally and physically? Could possible harm come to you from accepting them as true statements? Some people place placards on a wall or have a framed motto on a desk. However, what counts are the words by which they live. If the motto says, “Smile,” and they carry a frown; or “Do it now, and they procrastinate then these mottoes have no meaning. Those people are hypocritical and need to search for the truth because they say one thing and then do the opposite. Though our world seems materialistic today, people still want to help each other. It has been determined that it takes seventy-two muscles to frown and only fourteen to smile. Being considerate of the feelings of others will always be appreciated. It is true that what counts most in life is what we do for others. As you move forward one big step in 1966, do face the world to serve and give of your talents. We have heard, and will continue to hear, how necessary it is for man to find peace with all mankind. Ralph Waldo Emerson states, “Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” With you and me and all other working toward the goal of peace, it shall happen. Yes, it may seem far away. Yet, Browning writes, “Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?” I congratulate each of you for earning your Thomaston High School diploma. Together with your folks and your friends, I am proud of your accomplishments. We encourage you to go forward. Look upward, listen critically, and act thoughtfully. Herbert W. Before I leave I want to say thank you to my teachers, my friends, and the people of Thomaston. You have made me very happy during this year I have spent in your wonderful country. I have had wonderful experiences that I will never forget. Thomaston has become my town and Thomaston High School my school. I think that I have here another country, family and friends that mean almost as much to me as Colombia. I think the best way to know the United States is to live with her people—to understand her. I have done this and now I know why you are so prosperous. I think it is because you are very organized in the way you do things. The Student Council and other organized groups in Thomaston helped me very much. Everyone has done very much to make me very happy here. Please remember that you have a home in Cucuta, Colombia and I hope you will visit me sometime. Because I hope to return to Thomaston someday I will not say good-by, but Hasta Luego, Adela. The council is composed of eighteen members elected from the six grades of the school. In its regular meetings, held at least twice a month it prescribes studied solutions to student problems, as well as allotting funds, sanctioning student activities, and forming general student policy. Many of the tasks from former years have been continued this year. The book store is available for those students and teachers who wish to purchase literature for classroom and outside use; ice cream has become a very popular seller at lunch time as well as at basketball games. Also the suggestion box remains for the benefit of those who wish to see their ideas given thoughtful consideration. The Thomaston Chapter is affiliated with National Association of Student Council and the Connecticut Federation of Student Council. Its by-laws and principles are stated in the Student Council Constitution. Owl Staff The Owl Staff is one of the largest and most popular organizations in the school. The main purpose of this staff is producing the annual yearbook. The staff consists of three main sections: the business staff which handles the finances; the literary staff, which is responsible for the write ups; and the typing staff which does the final assembling and typing. There is much work put into the composing of this yearbook. Deadlines have to be met, extra money has to be raised, photographs have to be taken, and most important of all, yearbooks have to be sold. The organization of this yearbook is certainly not considered a task, it is a job that is done cheerfully for the good of our school. National Honor Society This June when you see car loads of students with swim suits and food baskets heading for Mrs. Platt’s cottage on Bantam Lake you can be sure it’s the day of the Honor Society’s annual picnic. “All work and no play” is not their motto, despite popular opinion. The Honor Society of Thomaston High School is a chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. Its purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, service, and leadership and to develop character in students of Thomaston High School. Founded in 1943 the chapter has been an active and challenging activity for junior and senior students for more than twenty years. The Chorus together with the band and many solo performances made both nights extremely successful. These annual concerts demonstrate the unselfish time and effort put into them by the members, but all this would almost be impossible without the dedication of our advisor, Mr. Collins. Therefore a very special appreciation is owed to Mr. Collins who liberally devotes his time to make our chorus both enjoyable and rewarding. The main objective of the band this year was to make their music “sound” even though the instrumentation was small. This was achieved only by the determination and total co-operation of the band members. The band took on some new responsibilities this year. Bibliosophs If one day while walking through the halls of T.H.S. you happen to notice a group of girls dressed in plaid skirts with madras blouses and unmatching knee-socks, or something of that sort, don’t panic! It’s only initiation day for the Bibliosophs. The Bibliosophs Club has that rare combination of fun, socializing and education all wrapped into one. Once a Bibliosoph always a Bibliosoph; this saying surely holds true for these girls. They are devoted to their club and they do all they can for the good of our school. A few of their many jobs are caring for the library and its books, aiding students to use the library properly, cataloging books, and arranging displays for the bulletin board. The Bibliosophs also take charge of the candy counter at basketball games, where they earn their money for their annual spring vacation. The Thomaston High girls varsity basketball team has done an outstanding job this year. They finished up their season in second place in the Berkshire League. This year as in others the girls had had that indefinable something, commonly known as the will to win. Then success is due largely to the coach who is tops in their opinion. Throughout the year there was fun and hard work combined, and throughout all their games they showed true spirit. The captains were Pam Morton and Elaine Chizinski. Second Row, Left to Right: Miss Tomasiello, Coach; Sullivan, Rogers, Although the girl’s junior varsity basketball season has not been too successful, the girls have been lighthearted and have remained spirited about it. They have realized winning is not the main objective, but the feeling of closeness and sportsmanship ranks first in importance. Another person to share this feeling is the new coach, Miss Tomasiello. This is Miss Tomasiello’s first teaching and coaching experience and she is continually searching for ways to better the team. Co-Captains for this year’s basketball team are Susanne Fazekas and Gail Chapman. Led by Capt. Kip Brammer the team came through with some exciting victories. Vern Pont was the team’s leading scorer and John Belonick was the team’s defensive standout. Other seniors who helped in the team’s victories were: Ed Waldron, George Kasper, Art Johnson, and Chuck Holbrook. With many returning lettermen, the years ahead should be good ones for T.H.S. soccer. Row 1, Left to Right: Whalen, Koenigsbauer, Parson, Brammer, Ostroski, LaMay, Holbrook, Holman. Even though the season wasn’t a decisive victory, the team displayed a lot of enthusisam and skill through the efforts of the coach, Miss Tomasiello. Pam Morton was chosen captain. The old and the new skills of the girls will be brought together for a more victorious team next year. The season was concluded with a Lasagna supper at the home of Miss Tomasiello, where the girls enjoyed a night of laughs and fun.
