EDITORIAL Henry Sumner Maine once said: Except the blind forces of Nature, nothing moves in this world which is not Greek in its origin. When we think of modern-day education, we think solely of a new twentieth-century invention. We do not stop to think that the geometry which we study today was developed as early as 230 B.C. Or that our modern system of education had its birth in the time of Sophists. The education in Sparta consisted chiefly of learning from books —a very modern-sounding concept. Despite the repulsion of anything old, the education of Athens still stands as one of the most successful in its results of any system in the world. Through the years the pendulum has swung from the idea of an education of physical training to that of strictly academic curriculum. But now it seems to be swinging towards a middle of the road course, which combines an education by doing with that of learning from books: a curriculum well suited to modern-day living. To MRS. HELEN SCOTT LEAVY oecause of her interest in all projects of the school and the community and her patient guidance, we of the Owl Staff are proud to dedicate this book. 6 ADMINISTRATION iflui Harold Konson, B.
