It is a painful, continual and difficult work done by kindness, by precept, and by praise, but above all - by example. We, the 1972 annual staff of THS, feel that MR. CHARLES J. ROSS has truly exemplified these qualities in education and sports and wish to dedicate this annual to him. 3 SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE To the Annual Staff and Sponsor: Once again the annual staff has ac- cepted the responsibility of publishing the yearly record of Thomas Public Schools. Also, once again the students of Thomas High School under the able guidance of Mrs. Haggard completed an excellent record. I am very proud of this accomplishment by our future citizens. I commend highly the Staff and Sponsor for this fine work. BOARD OF EDUCATION A. C. Minton, Jr., President; Ross Pickens, Member; Dick Frans, Member; Kent Kirkpatrick, Clerk; Eddie Perkins, Vice President. 4 High School Principal Set your goals high, as most people are about as successful as they make up their minds to be, and are willing to sacrifice to obtain these goals. CHARLES J. ROSS Grade School Principal Tommy Murray, principal of Thomas Elementary School, received his elementary and secondary education at Independence, his Bachelor of Science, and Master of Teaching at Southwestern State College. Thomas and Clinton, reign as the wln- nlngest high school football teams In the last 25 and 10 years, respectively. Thomas, which has made the state playoffs ev- ery year since 1955. owns a 25-year winning percen- tage of .814 with a combined record of 227-49-7. Clinton, which has made an appearance in a state finals game each of the last six seasons, dom- inates the 10-year standings with an .880 mark be- hind a 105-13-3 record Thomas barely edged out Ada for the top spot on the 25-year list, the Cougars winding up with an .807 percentage. Ada had one more victory than the Terriers but it also had two more losses and two more ties. Ties were counted as half-a-victory and half-a- defeat in figuring the won-loss percentages Ada did come out No. 1 in one category — for the most state championships won. The Cougars have 11 to their credit during the last 25 years (In- cluding a mythical one in 1954 when there were no state playoffs) while Thome has claimed eight. 25-Year Standings Team (8uue ftUm) 1. Consistency is the keynote to the success of Thomas and Ada. The Terriers have had only one losing season (1965) in the last 25 years and the Cougars have never dipped under the .500 mark in that time. Interestingly enough, both Thomas and Ada have better winning percentages for the last 25 years than they do for the last 10. The Terriers drop from .814 to .750 while the Cougars fall from .807 to .765. Clinton, on the other hand, goes from a .744 mark for the last 25 years (good for third place) to its remarkable .880 count during the last decade. All four of the Tornadoes’ state titles have come since 1965. The school closest to Clinton on the 10-year list. Weleetka, has never won a state championship. The closest the Outlaws have come was In 1961 and 1965 when they made the state semifinals. Weleetka's .855 10-year winning percentage topped an old playoff rival of the Outlaws. Mariet- ta, by .003 of a point. Clinton, Weleetka and Mariet- ta are the only schools to top the 80 per cent mark during the last decade. The old theory of competition being more equal in the larger classes does not appear to be true ac- cording to the winning percentage tables. The big- gest classes, 4A and 3A. have as many schools in the Top Ten of each list as the other four classes combined. Lawton (No. 4), Midwest City (No. 5) and Tul- sa Rogers (No. 6) are the 4A representatives on the 25-year list while Ada (No. 2) and Clinton (No. 3) are from 3A. Four Class 4A schools — Midwest City, No. 5; Enid. No. 7; Norman. No. 9. and Lawton. No. 10 — earned spots on the 10-year roster while two 3A schools — Clinton, No. 1, and Ada, No. 8 — also made it. Six schools — Ada. Clinton, Lawton, Lindsay. Midwest City and Thomas — showed their long winning traditions by making the Top Ten on both of the lists. The winning percentages of the top schools would be even higher if only the regular season records were considered. When a school makes the state playoffs, of course. It will either win it all cr be stuck with a loss (with the exception of ties which still count as half-a-loss). 10-Year Standings Tram (State 1111m) I. (llntan (4) ..................1M t.
