Behind the Scenes For many senior girls CavOchade is a umust do event. For others it is a nightmare in- flicted on them by proud parents. But whatever the reason, by late August 60 girls from Thomas Jef- ferson and other area schools were signed up to serve as CavOILcade princesses for 1987. Sunday meetings taught the par- ticipants how to walk, talk and act like princesses, and Saturdays were filled with shopping for the perfect white gown and just the right outfit for that all-important interview. As the coronation drew near, minor catastrophies were dealt with. Dress rehearsal gave the princesses a chance to practice their walk, and it gave anxious mothers a chance to check dress hemlines and the sparkle of the coronation gowns. The day of the big event saw girls up bright and early for their interviews at the Port Arthur Civic Center. After the judging, girls scrambled for beauty shops and ran last-minute PRINCESSES WITH A PURPOSE e Debra Montalvo tm and Ronda King UZi practice their walk the night before the pageant. errands. Halloween night was turned into a fairy tale for the princesses as they were greeted by the sight of an ice-blue castle upon entering the civic center to make their debut. Lots of picture taking and last- minute primping was the prelude to presentation of finalists and finally the queen. Hearts thumped and knees knocked during the whole performance. But finally - after an intermis- sion that seemed to last forever e the princesses made their way back to the stage for the coronation of the 1987 CaVOILcade royaltyi Winners included Miss Con- geniality, Holly Temple; Finalists, Diane Hawthorne, Suenda Clewis, Wendy Jackson, and Diana Rus- sle tNederlandi. Fourth runnereup was Leprecia Fontenot, third runner-up was Keri Ferret, second runner-up was Aimee Reeves tPNGi, first runner-up was Melissa Landry tPNGL and Queen was Christi Caner of Thomas Jefferson. WANT SOME PUNCH? - Debbie Ver- ret, the CavOILcade sponsor, is the only one who can afford to gain a few extra pounds before the big night I JUST BRUSHED MY TEETH! e Rachel LaFleur Uzi seems to be in no hurry to get ready for the pageant.

A Time for Fun Sounds ofjingling bells and chatter of excitement filled the halls dur- ing transition. Yards of maroon and gold ribbon, patches of sparkling glitter and tons of mums decorated the clothes of many girls. The slight chill in the air and the thrill of the event were every indication of the homecoming game on October 24. Because the game against Vidor was on a Saturday, everyone had more time to prepare himself for the activities. The Heralds were able to decorate the cafeteria without feeling rushed; girls had more time to get dressed for the dance after the game; and the football players had all Saturday morning to get their adrenalin flowing. As hoped, the evening was a success. During halftime, under a clear, starry night, Paula Pond was crowned 1987 Homecoming Queen. The finalists were Angelique Comeaux, Wendy Jackson, Shana Lancon, Dierdre LaFleur, Evy Leveige and Tracy Sessionse The game ended in a splendid victory over the Vidor Pirates with a score of 30-7. To top off the evening, the dance lasted until 1 a.m. Sunday.
