A Time for Freedom I still remember that pitch dark and chilly night in December when my mother, my sister and I fled our native land in a small and fragile boat with many other people. I coulant close my eyes even for one minute during the long and perilous thousand mile journey across the turbulent ocean. However, God did lead our boat through the long nights and murderous waves of the turbulent sea to a safe harbor of freedom and liberty. After those endless nightmares and fearful days, I realized that I left behind some precious things that I had loved and cherished. My father is still over there, being held prisoner by the communist regima in a so- called IIre-education camp. Because of his love for us, he endures hard- ships. I also left friends and classmates with whom I shared joys and sor- rows. I left the small hamlet bordered by a quiet river and rows of coconut palms, the laughs and cries of the children playing and the shrill cries of the crows and roosters. Gone are the familiar calls and cheers of the peasants on their way home at sunset. All these precious things are part of my native land, a land with many childhood memories, a land in which I was born and raised, and memories of a land for which my father has fought in a pursuit of freedom and liberty. He went through great hardships in order to keep us from missing any school days. Now, thousands of miles from this land, I let my mind wander through the cherished memories and browse through these unfortunate events that happened in my life. After a few months in a refugee camp, my family was settled in the country. Now, within a new school environment, surrounded by new ao- quaintances, it seems as if I have already inherited a priceless heritage from the youth of this nation. I have a dream that one day Pll contribute my tiny part to strengthen this nation which provides me a good life and new hope for my future. I now understand the meaning of the word freedom. I deeply understand the utmost sacrifice that my father has to endure in exchange for our liberty and future. I also understand the value of extreme suf- ferance we had to endure while drifting in the open sea. R students, Trading Places itHey, John! Can I borrow your lipstick? ttAmy, my shoulder pads are too tight? Sound backward? Well, thatis the way it was on Oct. 21, 1987 here at Thomas Jefferson High School. For the first time in five years, the senior class reinstituted an old high school tradition: The Powder PuffFootball Game. The guys, their skirts blowing in the breeze, executed deadly pyramids as the girls lined up on the sidelines of the football field. Port Arthur came out to Memorial Stadium to support the Jacket football team during Homecoming Week. The girls played a tooth and ttbrokenh nail game while being cheered on by the guys who were organized into three groups: Cheerleaders, Buzzards and Screamsters. The Gold team was led by the brilliant running efforts of Evy Leveige who produced the only score of the game, which ended 6- 0. The scoring was held to a minimum by the great defensive efforts of both teams. Despite the sticky fingers of Paula Pond, the Maroon team was unable to get on the scoreboard. The coaches, Beverly Dominguez and Kelly Doyle were commended for their work with the girls. The Screamsters, led by Captain Frank Nessour and lst Lieutenant Larry Triebel, turned in an ex- cellent performance during the half-time activities. Other drill team members were Michael Migues, Patrick McCorvy and Seth Dugan. Half-time activities also includ- ed a performance by the Buzzards Drum major, led the group through a spectacular routine at mid-field to simply dazzle the near 300 in attendance. WE'RE N0. 1 e The Gold Team rips through their run-thmugh before their victory. Highlighting the half-time ac- tivities was the crowning of our Powder Puff King. A Time for Fun Sounds ofjingling bells and chatter of excitement filled the halls dur- ing transition. Yards of maroon and gold ribbon, patches of sparkling glitter and tons of mums decorated the clothes of many girls. The slight chill in the air and the thrill of the event were every indication of the homecoming game on October 24. Because the game against Vidor was on a Saturday, everyone had more time to prepare himself for the activities. The Heralds were able to decorate the cafeteria without feeling rushed; girls had more time to get dressed for the dance after the game; and the football players had all Saturday morning to get their adrenalin flowing. As hoped, the evening was a success. During halftime, under a clear, starry night, Paula Pond was crowned 1987 Homecoming Queen. The finalists were Angelique Comeaux, Wendy Jackson, Shana Lancon, Dierdre LaFleur, Evy Leveige and Tracy Sessionse The game ended in a splendid victory over the Vidor Pirates with a score of 30-7. To top off the evening, the dance lasted until 1 a.m. Sunday. Behind the Scenes For many senior girls CavOchade is a umust do event. For others it is a nightmare in- flicted on them by proud parents. But whatever the reason, by late August 60 girls from Thomas Jef- ferson and other area schools were signed up to serve as CavOILcade princesses for 1987. Sunday meetings taught the par- ticipants how to walk, talk and act like princesses, and Saturdays were filled with shopping for the perfect white gown and just the right outfit for that all-important interview. As the coronation drew near, minor catastrophies were dealt with. Dress rehearsal gave the princesses a chance to practice their walk, and it gave anxious mothers a chance to check dress hemlines and the sparkle of the coronation gowns. The day of the big event saw girls up bright and early for their interviews at the Port Arthur Civic Center. After the judging, girls scrambled for beauty shops and ran last-minute PRINCESSES WITH A PURPOSE e Debra Montalvo tm and Ronda King UZi practice their walk the night before the pageant. errands. Halloween night was turned into a fairy tale for the princesses as they were greeted by the sight of an ice-blue castle upon entering the civic center to make their debut. Lots of picture taking and last- minute primping was the prelude to presentation of finalists and finally the queen. Hearts thumped and knees knocked during the whole performance. But finally - after an intermis- sion that seemed to last forever e the princesses made their way back to the stage for the coronation of the 1987 CaVOILcade royaltyi Winners included Miss Con- geniality, Holly Temple; Finalists, Diane Hawthorne, Suenda Clewis, Wendy Jackson, and Diana Rus- sle tNederlandi. After a brief delay, the parade went smoothly. Bands and drill teams from area schools showed up to contribute to the festivities. Many old-time classic cars putted down Gulfway, as well as plenty of new sports cars decorated with streamers and CavOILcade Princesses. Queen Christy Carter and four runners- up rode on a traditional float spon- sored by a local oil company. After the parade, many people headed for the thieves market. Dr. J im Weeks There were many changes during the 1987-88 school year, but the biggest change was the arrival of our new principal; Dr. Jim Weeksi He came to TJ with 18 years of experience as a principal in the PAISD. He served as principal at the night school at Edison Middle School, and for the last 15 years was principal at Franklin Elementary before taking on the T1 position. 81 love working with the kids and teachers at TJ. There is always something exciting going on. I like to deal with a challenge? The biggest change for the students this year was the addition of Saturday Detention. 8A friend of mine gave me the idea for it. I COWBOY J IM e Dr. Weeks daydreams about being on a ranch instead of at school needed to get students, attention? he said. With the arrival of Dr. Weeks came a boost in school spirit because of the reinstitution of the old Powder Puff Game. Dr. Weeks also planned new programs and changes for the 1988-89 school year, which includes a closed campus during the lunch periods and continued plans for the fence set up in the student parking lot. The lot will again be secured by a security guard who will patrol the student parking lot to keep undesirables off our school grounds. He also plans to establish a TEAMS program for reviewing and learning TEAMS skills. There are still some areas that need to be improved. Pd like to see the good behavior of our students continue, he said. Dr. Weeks is married and has two children His hobbies include traveling across the country in his trailer home and spending time with his family at Toledo Bend. 81 have more hobbies than I have time to do them inf he commented. He likes antique furniture and collects tlEarly American Junk, which is anything from the early days. Dr. Weeks looks forward to seeing students continue having spirit and taking pride in their school. Dr. Weeks grabs for the smaller skis instead of t 8 larger ones. ' Teachers are Human T00 TEACHER SHOCK o The camera captures Mr. Worthyis expression to an astonishing answer from a student. Some students think teachers are somehow bigger than life - they are supposed to know all of the answers all of the time. But, teachers are just like anyone else. They have the same feelings and just about the same homework as students - only about 100 times over! They spend many late nights working on grades or doing work for classes they take. So, give a teacher a break. Theylre only human after all. Teens take time to work Many students find it hard enough to have time for themselves with seven hours of classes and then piles of homework. Yet, some students still take on an extra load in the form of a part-time job. The objec- tives are the same: MONEY! One expense students often in- cur is that luxury that is often seen as a necessity: a car. With the gasoline price on a constant rise and the price of insurance, the ex- pense may be more than most parents are willing to pay. It often comes down to the clichefiif you want something, you,re going to have to work for it? And given that choice, many students start the search for employment. Other reasons for students seeking employment include weekend and prom expenses. Yet along with the monetary gain with a job, comes the academic pressure of maintaining grades and keeping up with homework. Late night cram ses- sions become a routine that doesnit mix well with early mom- ing classes. Some students compromise and enroll in the work programs of- fered. This allows them to work during school hours and lighten their class load. Others, however, cannot bring themselves to cut their academic classes and either work on the weekends or in whatever spare time they can muster up during the week. But this year there was a slight difference about the team; they lacked experience at many of the key skill positions. With three weeks of two-a-day ractice behind them, the lackets boarded a bus and headed to LaPorte to face the Bulldogs in the first of we non-district games. ,.,l The first game, as well as the rest of the preseason, was a nightmare. The Jackets dropped the first five games by a combined score of 59-187. Among these losses was a 45-7 wipeout at the hands of state-ranked Aldine MacArthur. Home Sports Entertainment televised this one-sided affair over a five-state area. The Ygllow Jackets were stopped by the Generals top-ranked defense, being held to under 100 yards total 0 ense. After the Jackets scored again, they looked like they would take the game and the district crown; Things turned, and the J ackets were defeated 14-1 3. In the last three district games, the Jackets faced a must-win situation. They started their playoff march with a 30-7 Homecoming pounding of Vidor. The scoring started quick when each team traded touchdowns. The Mustangs ran off to take a comman- ding 20-7 lead with three minutes left until halftime, but the Jackets rallied back with touchdowns by Adrian Landry and Brian Francis to take a 21-20 halftime lead. The second half was a nightmare. From the ensuing kickoff until the game was over the team totally fell apart. The Jackets turned the ball over seven times and the Mustangs rolled to a 48-27 victory. It was a heartbreaking loss for a team that had come so far, the unpredictable season had ended. The team then faced Nederland and the game was a nip and tuck affair, but a three point shot by Derrick Zaeharie am with three seconds left in overtime gave the team a 67-66 win. The season started slow with the Yellow Jackets winning about half of their games. But then came tournament play. The J ackets won the West Orange- Stark Baseball Tournament before district play began. With district, the Jackets put themselves in the spoilefs seat. Picked to finish no better than third, the team erupted to a 4-1 record in the first half of district play. Then disappointment came when the J ackets drop- ped their next two games. The J acket effort lead the team to a district play-off on a rain delayed Saturday night. In a must-win situation, Robert Chesson 0b hurl- ed a one-hit shut-out to ensure the Jackets a spot in the state play-offs. MIT; '9' '1'. Fans came from all over to winch Ihe Jackets play. Post-Season J ackets The Jackets pulled out a nail-biting district slate to face the PN-G Indians in a one-game play-off The winner would earn the district championship, and the loser would advance as the runner-up. Fate was on the Indianls side. The Jackets had defeated The Tribe in all four previous meetings, but it seemed nearly impossible for the Jackets to win the last contest. The game began with the Jackets favored to win, but it was not to be. The Indians pulled the game out slowly, but they hung on to the lead. Despite a seventh inning run on points and the stranding of l l mEn on base, the Jackets were destined to lose. They advanced as the district runner-up. Post-season play-offs consisted of only one game each. With every game a must-win situation, the Jackets were hard at work on the practice field. In their first play-offcontest, the Jackets slammed a 10-2 victory down in the books behind Robert Chessonls 021 arm. But, the next week would prove different. With a week of rest, the Jackets headed to Houston to face the top-ranked defending state champions. Chesson, the scheduled starter, had to sit out the game because of a sore arm, so the Jackets had to empty their bullpen in a 4- 0 loss. The season ended for the J ackets. The team, coached by George Zoch, turned out to be quite a squad. Power lifting is a sport where each competitor lifts against every other competitor, It is both an in- dividual and a team sport. The lifters competed in three events: squats, bench and dead lift. The weight totals are combined and awards are given. Each of the top Power Lifting five spots is awarded points. The points are tabulated and the school or team with the most points wins the meet. The Jackets started one of their competitions off with a third place fmish at the Little Cypress- Mauricevill Meet. Paced by two first-place finishes, the first meet in which the team competed was a success. The Regional Meet was next, and the Jackets sent seven lifters to the competitions Five of the lifters qualified for the state meet. At the state level the team was not quite as successful. T. K. Earlier in the school year, questionaires were sent to every freshmanls homeroom class. Unfortunately not all of the questions were com- pletely and correctly answered, therefore, they are not all printed. As freshman section editor, I thought the questionaires would be one way to get to know the freshman class. The answers I received ranged from funny to surprising and from unusual to interesting. One thing I did learn was that a hopeful, successful, and hap- py future lies ahead for the class of 1991. We have witnessed a lot of changes, worked and played hard throughout the school year and evolved into new people, yet hopefully retained some 0fthat llfresh innocence. At times it seemed it would be impossible to complete the 1988 Yellow Jacket. With all its pictures, pages, picas, points and endless deadlines, the job before us held lots of responsibilities as well as fun. After all was said and finally done, it was clear to all that we did the best that we could. Considering we started the year with the completion of the I987 book hanging over our heads, we met our challenges and then some. Along the way we met a new principal, many new teachers and even more new students. We were subject to new rules, were granted some new privileges and experienced the beginnings of new traditions. So, the name of this volume is appropriately, ltA Time to Change? With the end of the school year, there came a rush of work, frazzled nerves and anxious moments when even the most positive of us doubted that this document would ever be mailed to the publisher, let alone published. I would like to thank everyone involved with this tremendous effort. I would also like to thank the Port Arthur Independent School District for the opportunity to learn from this experience and for the overall education afforded me by this district and Thomas Jefferson. Finally, even though many people have put down Port Arthur, the city turns out a lot of good, quality people. Itls a good place to grow up in, and itls the best place to get educated. I hope you enjoy the 1988 Yellow Jacket, and I hope every time you glance into its pages it brings back lots of good memories and recalls the many times of change. Torrey's Fan Club Specid dunks to Torrey S. Moomr. who gives me the courage and detemimtion to reach my goals - nI love youll The de-Pa Good Luck Kirk 6: Angie!
