A New Beginning x 9 Thomas Jefferson High School 2200 Jefferson Drive Port Arthur, Texas 962-8451 Volume 35 1981-82 PORT ARTIIFR. TEXAS PIVBUC IJRIHRY The beginning of school held 0 new challenge for everyone. For Seniors, it was their last year. After groduotion they would go off to 0 new world with bigger challengest For Juniors, they were op- prooching their lost years of high school and getting ready for their future. It was the first year at TJ for most of the Sophomores. They had to get oc- quointed with 0 different school and teachers. This was the first year for all Freshmen to attend TJ. Plus, it was their first step on the ladder to graduation With the addition of oil Freshmen the attendance rose to ap- proximotely 2200 Mixed emotions were seen on faces about the beginning of school. Some of us were happy because we sow friends who had been out of touch through the summer. Others of us were sad or depressed because the summer, sleeping late, going to the beach or watching T.V. had all ended. We oil did agree on the over- crowded halls and Classrooms. As the year went by complaints were every day. Yet we still held our heads high and somehow we even managed to have 0 laugh or two through the year. Seniors Shayne Rlleyt John Batiste and friends catch up on the iotest issue of the Filer Freshmen Pomy Sandy and Kim find time between English and History to smile for the camera. The beginning was also a routine to most of us by now. We come back to o lit- rle crowded situation We went through the usual pro- blems: finding lockers, fin- ding the tight room, and changing closses on your mixed up schedule, It was a challenge to get through the maze of students in just six minutes. Soon we all got settled down and things started 90- mg just 05 they had in the post years You could soon see couples walking down the hell. Then to let you know you were really back in school the homework stoned pouring in Gt seemed to be on the nights you already had too much to do, let alone homework; Then come finals and boy did the headaches and late night studying show on students. Though somehow everyone lived and we even managed to have a little fun along the way. Principal Rothenberget and Head Coach Ronnie Thompson talk over Dome instructions with Mr. Petisco and Mr Crtcchio, This Annual is dedicated to Henry Honk Clark The death of Coach Henry Honk Clork mode February 3, 1952 0 very mourntuI doy. Cooch Clerk was an inspiration to students, teachers, and othletes or Thomas Jefferson for 35 years. In honor of his dedicated service, the Spirit and Desire Aword was changed to the Honk Clork Aword. Clark was looked up to by all who knew him. Prin- cipal Rouel Rothenberger expressed his views about Clerk's death by saying, We lost 0 tradition and 0 fine example for students and teachers. Bill Meehon said, Honk Clark was 0 great man whose legacy is the many successful students and players he influenced. I feel very fortunate to have known him. He was 0 winner on Earth and I know that he is on even greater winner in Heaven. Athletes viewed Ciork with great admiration and respect. Sheo Walker, who gave on exceptional speech on Clerk at the football banquet, said, His knowledge and actions set on example for everyone. Dorren Terrell further explained, To me, Coach Clerk was an inspiration to the team and will never be forgotten. Morty Totum also commented, Coach Clark was one of the first coaches I had contact with at T.J. As 0 sophomore, I played defensive back and spent most of my practice time with him. I got to know him well and the more I knew him the more I liked him. He told me lots of stories and I think that's what I miss most. Yes it's true. A legend and a hero is gone, but his memory will live on to inspire us forever, Rest in peace, Coach Clark. No conventions were held this year since there were not enough candidates running for offices. The big difference in elections this year was that the school was not able to get the city voting machines. Voting had to be done by hand and the results hond counted. At football games, pep rallies, and porodes, Hussor spirit could not be ignored. Pre-proctice for the corps began on July 13 leaving a majority of the girls hot, tired, and frustrated. Their hard work was displayed in the Red and White Doy performance, at the close of pre-proctice. Regulation practice began on the first day of school and led into footboll season and fall parades. Hussor spirit shined bright during all activities, especially at the Dome. As that game faded from their minds, plans for Hussor Boll, tryouts, end the Son Antonio trip were being mode. So where, do you ask, does he get this unique talent? Well my dad stoned rodeoing when he was 10. He took my brother, Kirk, and me with him to the rodeos, His brother, Kirk, is 01979 H. graduate. Rodeoing takes 0 lot of work and hard practice. Kent insists, HI rodeo every weekend and I attend two or three rodeos, but I don't practice much. People do not realize it, but it takes more than just a tough cowboy to get on 0 wild bull or horse and ride. There is 0 lot of equipment involved, such 05: chops, gloves, bull ropes and the traditional cowboy hat and boots, which cowboys are famous for. Rodeoing draws many kinds of people. Having been taught the basics by his dad, he has been soiling since he was nine. Charlie and his crew, sophomore Chuck Lohoye, spend five days a week practicing for their races in the summer. They spend much of their spore time reviewing rule books and studying soil shapes and tactics. Four to five hours are spent every day practic- ingt For every hour spent soiling, you have to spend another hour cleaning rhe boot, says Chorlie. Last year, Charlie and Chuck roced together in the Sec Explorer Regional Championships held in Port Arthur and took second place. They were competing with sailors from New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and southern parts of Louisiana. This year the competition will be held near Key Largo, Florida.
