Many months before, the halls of Thomas jefferson rang with one loud exclamation: Beat Odessa! A green bunch of boys made the long trip to west Texas just for that pur- pose. And furthermore, much to the surprise of all their followers, they returned to their home town with that victory behind them. Odessa's Bronchos, selected by many to take the state championship, got off to a blazing start by traveling 75 yards in eleven plays. Such a fast send-off caused many people to think that the contest would be a run away. But the youngsters from Port Arthur were not to be denied. It took the jackets only eight tries to go for their score. Frank Eidom scored his first touchdown of his, and the team's, 1949 season. Freddie Lucas let his toe tie the score. The Yellow jackets tallied three more times with Eidom crossing the line twice and Gail Mills carrying once before Odessa could find power enough to score. The Port Arthur boys did the trick by staging the biggest upset of the week, 27-13. GALVESTON ACTION PORT ARTHUR-7, FORTIER-0 New Orleans, La.. Sept. 16-fAnother out-of-town game was the second of the year for the Port Arthur Yellow jackets and again they were slated to lose to a team believed to be much stronger, lfortier High, the Crescent tity and state thampion ot' the year hetiore, was supposed to he one of the strongest teams to appear on the jacket sehedule. A defensive game was expetted and that is exaetly what the fans got. For three long periods, the battle raged bank and forth without either team receiv- ing a break. ln the middle of the third quarter, Frank liidom broke through the Tarpon setondary and galloped '42 yards for a score. The most heautiliul run ot the whole season was talled hatk hetause ot' a tlipping penalty. lfinally, thanks to .1 nice job at quarter back, Mickey Cappadonna tired the New Orleans lads with continuous end runs. Then, it was just a matter of driving to a last period tally. Freddie Lucas and his toe racked up the last score ot the game. FORTIER GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-50, MILBY-6 Port Arthur, Tex., Sept. 23-The first home game for the Yellow jackets was against a Houston team, Milby High. With two wins in the record hook, the Port Arthur team still had not proven themselves to the home town fans. Skepticism was still running high. Bogging down on the first drive, the jackets held Milby, took over on the Houston team's aio, and went for a touchdown with Cotton Mills carrying the leather. jumping to a quick six point lead, the jackets again scored after stopping the Buffaloes. Scoring almost at will, the home team built up a 31-O score at the half. The jackets scored once more before the Milby Buffaloes could clear away the fog and see their way to a touchdown. Hitting the line again and again, the Milby boys finally managed to cross the goal line for their only tally. Mills scored three times. Frank Eidom made two, Billy Wfhaley, two, and Mills tossed to Mickey Cappadonna for another. MILBY GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-4I, SAN JACINTO-6 Port Arthur, Tex., Sept. 30-Another Houston football team made the fateful journey to Port Arthur for the purpose of stopping the three game winning streak, but to no avail. Bringing against the Yellow jackets one of the best, fastest, and trickiest T forma- tion teams in the state of Texas. Never before in the history of Thomas jefferson High had Port Arthur fans seen any finer ball handling. The San Jacinto Bears were held after six attempts. Then the Yellow jackets took over and traveled 84 yards to a touchdown. The Golden Bears took the Port Arthur kick- off and brought the ball back for a score of their own to tie the count at 6-6. Fighting all the way in the second period, neither team could score until almost half time. Then, the jackets recovered a Bear fumble and Gail Mills finally cracked the line from two yards out to break the tie. The half ended with Port Arthur leading, 13-6. From there on, the Bears were whipped by sheer power. In the last half, Frank Eidom carried for one, Mills for another, Milton McGee for one, and Eidom threw to Charles Bankston for the last. SAN JACINTO GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-2I, PASADENA-0 Port Arthur, Tex.. Oct. 7fThe Pasa- dena Eagles were the next bunch of boys to move into the mosquito infested coastal town but even the mosquitoes refused to venture out on such a dismal night as greeted the visiting team. K SENIOR ANCHORS Lafitte, Cappadonna, Mills, Walker Rain poured from every nook and cranny on or about the field. Mud, the great equalizer, was inches deep. From the start, either team could win. With the weather the way it was, favorites were not picked. After holding the Eagles on their set of downs, the Yellow jackets made a quick march down the field scoring on a pass from Frank Eidom to Gail Mills. Midway in the second stanza, Port Arthur capitalized on a break and Mills carried five straight times for the count. Lucas added his second placement of the night. Nearly at the end of the third quarter, the jackets took over on their own 25 and went the distance in fourteen attempts with Mills again going over for the counter and Lucas letting his toe add the final point. PASADENA GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-33, CORPUS CHRIST!-0 Port Arthur. Tex., Oct. 14-After .1 torrential downpour the week before, all Port Arthur fans expected anything to happen. The only thing they were sure about was that .1 game would be played. Frank Eidom. the passer of the team and a favorite of the fans, was forced to view this one from the sidelines due to an injury received the week before. W'ithout him, the coaching staff didn't know what would happen. The Yellow jackets scored the first time they gained possession of the ball. Cotton Mills carried the ball across after he, Mickey Cappadonna, and .1 pass to Bill VC'haley shared honors going 70 yards. Minutes later, in the second quarter, Wfhaley and Mills traveled 71 yards with Xwhaley finally scoring. Returning to the field after the half, the jackets found a tired bunch of Corpus Christi boys ready to resume the game. Whaley' scored once again in the third, Then Billy Sandefur struck pay dirt for the first time and Harold O'Brien plunged across for the final tally making it the fifth victory for the Yellow jackets by a score of 33-0. CORPUS CHRISTI ACTION PORT ARTHUR-56, ORANGE-6 The Port Arthur Yellow jacket 1949 football season moved into the home stretch as their first district game arose before them. The Orange Tigers, rated before the season as the team to beat, were looked on as not too powerful. Coach Bud Tomlin had so arranged his schedule the previous year that his team would draw a bye before the all-important Orange tangle. With this the case, he was able to give the jackets a continuous two week workout and had them keyed up for the district opener. Cotton Mills and Frank Eidom shared the honors of setting up the first Port Arthur tally with Eidom finally cracking the line for the score. After that initial touchdown, there was no doubt in the minds of any Yellow jacket fan as to who would win. Eidom scored two more six pointers besides the first, Mills made two, Billy Whaley crossed the goal the same number of times, and Harold O'Brien ran one over. Besides these touchdowns, Freddie Lucas, using his toe, was able to score five conversions and one field goal for a total of eight points. Orange rooters went wild when, in the third quarter, a long pass play was good for 43 yards and a touchdown. This was the only blood drawn by the Tigers. ORANGE GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-37, SOUTH PARK-7 The Port Arthur Yellow jackets, undaunted in seven previous engagements and in the thick of district warfare with an overwhelming victory over Orange behind them, were slowly being recognized as the potential team to whip for the state championship. Witli that record in the books, the Yellow jackets next had to move into Beaumont for the annual game against the South Park Greenies. Not considered generally as a strong team, the Greenies. after their upset victory of Marshall, now received a certain amount of respect and were considered dangerous in the clutches. Possibly the game before had taken most of the fight out of the boys because the South Park game was the poorest showing made by the Yellow jackets in the 19,49 foot- ball season. The line couldnt open up holes. The backs couldnt get started and the blocking by all was the worst of the year. The score did not typify the type of game played by the Port Arthur-team. Wfhen they got the ball in scoring position, the jackets couldnt go overg the first time that had happened all year. If they had been up to par, this fracas would have definitely been a one sided affair because of the fact that South Park never threatened and was weaker than expected. SOUTH PARK GAME ACTION PORT ARTHUR-54, PORT NECHES-7 Port Arthur, Tex., Nov. I l- fThe Port Nethes Indians. next door neighbors to Port Arthur, was the third clistritt game of the season stheduled, The Indians had already tome out on the short end ol' the score in one gaine so the local fans were not expctting too inueh of a ball game but surprising little Beaumont still had to he rernernlvered. Onte again scoring at their first opportunity. Gail Mills threw a pass to Frank Eidoin lor the counter, No time had elapsed before Mills scored utter two attempts from the 55. A short time later Mills again scored, this one from the fifty. After that, it was literally no tontest, The Yellow 'latkets stored virtually at will. Mills rnade another, Eidoin urossed onte, Mills threw to Mickey W'allcer for another, and Eidoin passed to Billy W'haley for the last. Freddie Lutas added tive points the hard way, one at a time. PORT NECI-IES ACTION CONVERSION PAIR Cappaclonna and Lutas PORT ARTHUR--72, BEAUMONT-I3 Port Arthur, Tex., Nov. 2-l-f'Age-old Turkey Day rivalry with the Beaumont Royal Purples came down to its true meaning in 1949, with both teams coming down the home stretch neck and neck. The final game, this one, would decide who would get the district crown and he eligible to represent ll AA in the state playoffs. Beaumont realized that the only way to win this one would he to open up passing and continue to do so for forty-eight minutes. But this startegy backfired. Harold O'Brien intercepted and on the second try, Cotton Mills went 542 yards for the score. For the second straight week, the Yellow jackets scored almost any time anyone felt like working up the energy to run down the field. So many touchdowns were made that nearly everyone lost count. The play of plays, though, came in the closing seconds of the game. Six points more would set a new margin hy which the jackets had heaten Beaumont but the ball rested on the Port Arthur three. Gail Mills faded back, cocked his arm, and let fly with a pass completed to Claude Gaspard on the fifty. He went all the way for a score. Playing back and forth in the first period, neither team could score. After an exchange of blocked punts, Tomie Ward, big 200 pound Galveston fullback, broke for the side lines and romped 46 yards to take the lead, 7-0. But a few moments later, just time enough to get mad, Gail Mills came storming down the field and ran 38 yards to tie the score. After getting no where, Galveston punted, and Port Arthur turned the trick again for another tally. Frank Eidom scored this one and another just a few minutes later. Mills went over once in the third period, also. Although played on a rain-soaked field in a blinding deluge, the score was higher than most had expected. PORT ARTHUR- I 3, MARSHALL-0 Port Arthur, Tex., Dec. 10-East Texas' contribution to 1949 football, the Marshall Mavericks, came to Port Arthur to meet the Yellow jackets in the state quarter-finals battle. Once again, as the week before, the jackets didn't seem to be able to get rolling. Finally, after intercepting a pass, the team was able to advance the ball to the Marshall nine. From there, Freddie Lucas booted a field goal that was just short of the mark. Then late in the first half, Frank Eidom tossed to Mickey Cappadonna, a play that covered 71 yards and the first score of the game. The final tally came in the third stanza when Gail Mills hit left tackle for 72 yards and the last score, making it 13-0, MARSHALL GAME ACTION -rf PORT ARTHUR-I4, AUSTIN-20 Port Arthur, Tex., Dec. l7hInto each life, some rain must fall, but it doesn't look like it should always fall in the lives of the Port Arthur Yellow jackets in their thirteenth game of the season playing for the right to participate in the finals of the state of Texas. The Austin Maroons had a sweet touch of revenge to hand to the Port Arthur team for the way that they were treated the year before. Not until the last few moments did anyone realize what was happening. It seemed impossible for any team to be able to bring to a halt the scoring might of a team as powerful as the Yellow jackets were. Witli a little over a minute gone. Albert Pessara stepped back to boot the ball out of danger but the low flying punt was blocked and recovered for a touchdown. just a few moments after, the Maroons started a drive that carried to a fourteen point lead. At last the jackets came to life and Gail Mills scored to cut the lead by half. But Austin wasn't through for the afternoon. A pass caught the jackets napping and the Maroons led, 20-7. Back comes Port Arthur to again cut the fatal lead but never enough. Taking the game 20-14, the Austin Maroons moved into the state finals.
