THE Published By THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL Port Arthur, Texas Our aim for the 1949 Yellow jacket has been to put YOU into the pages of this annual. You and all your activities have been our theme. If we have successfully caught a glimpse of your student life and recorded it, we shall count The Yellow jacket of 1949 a success. A Message to the Students: The main purpose of The Yellow lat-leer is to record your achievements. As you turn its pages and engage in meditation, may it serve as an inspiration to you for future achievement, and may each new record, whether in words, pictures, or deeds, serve as a challenge towards still greater accomplishments. Sincerely, Z. T. FORTESCUE Superintendent of Schools Dear Students: The purpose of a year book is to preserve pleasant memories of days that are pastg days when youth, freedom, health and vigor ruled your life. We owe a debt of gratitude to past generations for making this good life possible. We owe an obligation to future generations to pass equal or better opportunities on to them. Wfe may be failing in this sacred task. The principle that has made our country great is that each citizen has certain rights and certain obligations. If we neglect the obligations, we shall forfeit the rights. Let us arouse ourselves and keep America great. But, my friends, lt is later than you think. tw. M' 7' XV. B. This game was important to everyone as the Jackets had already been acclaimed the best in the state. Local fans were not kept waiting long, for the excitement started as soon as the Yellow jackets kick- ed off. Tech scored fast but they could not equal the superior playing of a strong line and a fast backfield. EARL WALDEN HUGH REEDER LOUISIANA CHAMPS-24-O That hard-charging line of the Yellow Jackets kept the Fortier Tarpons of New Orleans from winning the second game played before a home crowd. This tough squad was said to be the best in the neighboring state and they proved it before the night was over. Going into the second period, the score was deadlocked at nothing. Earl Hall was called on to kick a field goal that might decide the game. Breaths were held as the ball split the uprights. This change of events crushed the Tarpon hopes and three more scores soon followed for the jackets. A FAST T -48-7 Touchdowns came right and left for the Yellow jackets when the San Jacinto Golden Bears came over from Houston to try to upset them. The Bears re- portedly had the best T formation in this sec- tion of the country. Five touchdowns were run up by the Port Arthur team before the Houstonians could score. The Golden Bears were just so busy trying to stop Yellow jacket runners that they could not get their offense working. BYRON MOORE DON SEIBERTH TOO ONE-SIDED-61-0 The fourth and final home game of this series for the Port Arthur Yellow jackets was played against Sunset of Dallas. At one time, the Bisons were con- sidered a powerful team in the state of Texas, but those times changed. The Yellow jackets went into the contest high- ly favored, and no one was disappointed at the fin- ish. Port Arthur crossed the goal-line nine times to roll up the largest score of the season. ELMER LOCKE JACK DAY if v in if! Q 1 Q -in FREDDIE I-IAAS EARL HALL .nl DON PARKER FORMER KINGS FALL--14-6 The Port Arthur Yellow jackets took their stingers and went ,to San Antonio for their first out-of-town game to play the 1947 state champion Breckenridge Eagles. The jackets, up against a pow- erful team for the first time, played a scoreless open- ing half. By using two of the oldest plays in football, the statue of liberty and screen pass, the Alamo City boys scored first but to no avail. Before the largest crowd to witness a high school football game in 1948, the jackets came back fighting to win 14-'6. MORE TOUCllDOWNSf4l1-12 Back to Port Arthur for another four-game stand came the Yellow jackets with five victories to their credit and the season half over. The john Reagan Bulldogs of Houston were the next in line to fall. Both the Bulldogs and the jackets were undefeated up to this time. The Yellow jackets scored six times in the first half before Reagan could stop them. After the half, a changed eleven came onto the field to hold the ag- gressive home team scoreless against the second and third teams. GEORGE EASTERLING THE TIGERS SCRATCHEDWZS-6 The Port Arthur Yellow jackets were the top team of the state as they moved into district play with the first game scheduled against Orange. The usual rivalry with the Tigers was renewed but this was a had season for the Bengals. Ken Reese and Olney Beltz were threats all the way, but they did not measure up to the Port Arthur backfield. Although the Orange lads did get away for one store, they never threatened again. The Yellow jackets made all four of their tallies in the first half with the hope of receiving no injuries for the next game. SECOND DISTRICT-24-0 With one district win behind them, the Port Arthur Yellow jackets moved toward the end of the season and on to South Park. After the jacket victory over Orange, the Greenies were supposed to be the only threat for the district crown. Even with Charles Saxe, later named to the all state team, the Greenies could not hope to stop the powerful machine that had tumbled seven teams without a loss. The Parkers held the Yellow jackets to four scores but did not manage to get any them- selves. fs , v. 4, .y i. , , V Y . 'K :ig-iq?ysT.?g'. ,. x V i',g-!fY.F.uy9 h', iii, ij... WEBER JIMMY FLETCHER THE NEWCOMERS FALL-47-0 The Yellow jackets were still leading the top teams of Texas as the district play neared an end. The ninth elevengfor the jackets to face were the boys from Port Neches, new to AA football. Even though they were small, the Yellow jackets respected their speed and were not too over confident. Although the mid-county team never did score, they played a hard ball game. The Yellow jackets crossed the goal line seven times that night. A THANKSGIVING TURKEY-55-0 Up to the last game of the regular '48 football season came the undefeated Port Arthur Yellow jack- ets. The annual Turkey Day game with Beaumont was at hand, with the Purples having lost every contest. The Yellow jackets went into play to score the biggest defeat in jacket-Purple history. Rolling up eight touchdowns in forty-eight minutes, the Port Arthur team had a final tally of 55-0. s-.v V f.,,,,,.,A,,. ,., , f Q., , ,,.4,L, -fy-, , ' 1 ., ff: ,V -1 . ,.,f 1 -pgs--, ' T..-qi ,, qv , . :M ,jak V ',,, 4 Ct. ., , , . . , t . ,4 , - -. The Port Arthur Yellow jackets completed the season with a perfect record, and were thus entitled to play the Baytown Ganders who won the district title in 12AA. For the first time, the Yellow jackets were up against one of the best defensive teams in the state. Up to this game, neither squad had lost a game, although Lamar of Houston played the Geese to a tie. Everyone realized the kind of game that was coming after the first few minutes of play, After the jackets recovered a blocked punt on the Gander 25 yard line and five plays failed to yield a score, Cowboy Hall ran in to try his second field goal of the year. Hall made it good from the nine to put the jackets out in front. Opposing lines battled each other for over half the game before another score was made. This touchdown was set up by an intercepted pass that was run back to the Baytown 19. From there, eight plays elapsed before the jackets could charge through the Gander line. DARRELL LAFITTE Q MICKEY WALKER GAIL MILLS HUGH WILSON 5 Q I CECIL KING LOUIS LUMBLEY JERROLD PEERY MAYNE BROUSSARD QUARTERFINALS GO-35-0 The Port Arthur Yellow jackets moved into the state capitol for their quarter- finals battle against the Austin Maroons. The Jackets were slight favorites over the faster Maroons before game time. Reports from Austin for a week preceding the game tried to build up an air of over confidence in the jackets and so prime the Maroons into a better mental con- dition. This seemed to make no difference to the Port Arthur boys who entered Texas Memorial Stadium to do or die. In the opening minutes of the game, the superior Port Arthur linemen opened a hole in the center of the line to make possible a 41 yard touchdown run. Minutes later, another hole was opened in the same place but this run was good for 89 yards. The Yellow jacket plays were going all the way that clay. Three more scores followed in the second half, two of them good for long gains. The first was good for 17 yards, the second was a center plunge from the one, and the last carried for 73 yards. TOO MUCH KINCANNON-6-13 A strong and powerful Port Arthur Yellow jacket eleven went to Austin for the second straight week, this time on December 18 to play the Wacto Tigers for the semi-final crown. As the appointed day arrived, a light drizzle began to fall. No passes were expected in Texas Memorial Stadium that day, but as the day got under way, passes filled the air. At the end of two quarters, the Yellow jackets and Tigers were still fighting for the lead. The Bengals broke into a thirteen point margin in the third stanza behind the able passing of Claud Kincannon. Richard Parma cracked the center of the line for the second score. The Port Arthur eleven scored early in the last period and a few moments later, jack Day went 89 yards for a tally that was called back because of an offsides penalty. After winning this game, The Tigers went on to take the state championship from the Amarillo Sandies, 20-0.
