Jefferson Loses Accreditation, New School Promised That headline blasted the Dragon ' s of 1967. In the simple signing of a paper, Thomas Jefferson High School lost its posi- tion as a school and died. Alumni, seniors, and underclassmen struggled to revive the memory. The Dragons fought hard so that Jefferson would not permanently disap- pear. These dedicated people, who would always consider themselves Dragons, finally achieved results. They were prom- ised that, as soon as possible, a new Jef- ferson would be built. For four long years, the Jefferson Alumni watched and waited for that promise to be kept. Then, in July, 1971, plans for a new high school were announced. No name was chosen yet for this new school, and it became the anonymous, High School C. Dragons held their breath and kindled their hopes, while the school board delib- erated on a name. The school board mem- bers reached a decision, and finally, at long last, a four-year-old promise was kept, and Thomas Jefferson Senior High School was reborn. Reborn, but without a home. While the school board and county commissioners searched for just the right site, the new Jefferson Dragons attended classes on the afternoon session on the A. P. Leto High School campus. This small, confused group of sophomores and juniors soon caught on to the traditional Jefferson fire and spirit, and proceeded to let the community know that the Dragons were indeed back, and there to stay. Two years passed while Jefferson eyes, old and new, were turned towards a piece of land at 4401 Cypress Street, and the building construction. The new Dragons were waiting patiently at Leto, waiting for a home. Finally, on August 27, 1 973, Jef- ferson students entered that home — a true Dragons Den. The new Jefferson building utilized every modern educational concept, not just structurally, with the mall area and open classrooms, but also with a curriculum devoted to the individual student. This dream, that became a reality, offi- cially opened on October 24, 1 973, with the dedication of Thomas Jefferson Senior High School . . . a DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE.
