SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF Our rifle team was organized in December, 1939, but due to the inexperience of the boys, little success was attained. In the next school year, however, with the same boys on the team, we won several matches against Hillsborough, Plant, and K. M. I. We also placed ninth in the Fourth Corps Area Rifle Match. After having been in existence for only three years the team reached the pinnacle of success. With several charter members, it became the first team of Tampa t win the Fourth Corps Area Rifle Match. In this con test, which is fired against twenty-three other school in nine states of the South, the ten boys with high score received bronze medals from the War Department. The following is the list of the boys who won th Match and their individual scores: George Selby - 380 Bert Pooley - - 371 Donald Young - 366 Philip Kirby - - 361 Russell Southwick 360 George Mentouri 3 S8 Ace Allen - - 352 Oscar Hewlett - 350 Leonard Vidal - 348 Claude Wilson - 346 Our next contest was for the William Randolph Hearst Trophy. In this match we placed with a score of 891 out of 1000. Only five boys, George Selby, Bert Pooley, Russell Southwick, Philip Kirby, and Donald Young, fired. George Selby was accredited with the third highest individual score. On Friday, March 27, a match was fired between the fifteen boys in Tampa with high scores in the Fourth Corps Area Match. This was a North-South Match against Bangor, Maine, for the possession of a trophy which is held by the winning team for the ensuing year. By this match the ten members of the All-Tampa Rifl Team are determined. The Tampa team won the trophy Jefferson placed three men on this team: George Selby Ace Allen, and Bert Pooley. In the matches participated in during this schoo year, the following boys attained a rating of exper riflemen : Donald Young, Acc Allen, George Selby Russell Southwick, Bert Pooley, and Philip Kirby. Much credit for the success of our rifle team can b placed directly upon Sgt. Bond, instructor of our schoo unit. Borders, Tony Leto, Mario Ippolito, Eugene Lewis, Paul Seliaibly OUR FOOTBALL HISTORY In 1939 Jefferson became a high school. With all the excitement, plans, and organization came talent from all parts of the city. This talent was to make the school what it is today. In the organization, of course, came sports. W. E. Harker was appointed head coach. He called the first practice of a Jefferson high team late in August. About twenty odd boys appeared at that prac- tice-and they were mlilg small but willing boys who found the first few practices hard and tiresome. But the soreness of arms and legs gradually disappeared. Coach weeded out the boys who didn't show up so well and prepared the other boys for their first game-against Dade City. Among these boys were Marcelo Maseda, who proved to be a fine football player and equally good in basketball and baseball. He was elected captain and lcd his team over a rocky Hrst year losing the majority of the games but retaining that hard fighting jeffer- son spirit. Then came 1940-a better year although meeting better and more experienced teams. We met, this year, for the Hrst time in our football history, other city teams --Jesuit and Plant. We lost both, but bowed grac- iously. D. A. Borders starred as the best player and was elected captain. But let us now turn to a brighter field and the pres- ent time. The first Jefferson Senior High team took to the field. It sounds good, doesnit it? I don't say this as a question to be answered, for if you are a loyal Jef- fersonian, there is no question in your mind. These spirited players took to the Held in sparkling uniforms and felt the thrill and glory of wearing the good old Gold and Blue. They heard the cry for victory but could not answer, for they lost the Hrst game. Yet boys said Never say Die, and went on to glory trimming Clearwater, a team that had tied I-Iillsbor ough. This brought the sweet taste of victory On and on we went for five straight wins, but th feat struck-due mainly to injury of a couple of our men-and stayed with the team for the remaining games on the schedule. Although this did not hurt spirit, it hurt the heart of each and every player and swell coach. This first high school football season with five wins and four defeats. jack Borden elected captain. The Typhoons QB teamj won three games out of with Hdlsborough, Plant, and St. Petersburg. Because most of these boys are now graduating, let not forget them and all their sacrifices. May they go to win more glory and fame in other parts of this THE COACHES Leff In Rigblz Asst. Coach Richard Spoto, Coach W. E. Harker 1. THE LETTERMEN Barnie Baggett D. A. SWIMMING FLASHES A D SPLASHES Our swimming team is a very tiny mite, having only five mem- bers but nevertheless it is :1 mighty mite. In its first meet, that with Hillsborough, our team defeated the vaunted Terriers to the tune of S7 to 38. Although our team members did not shine in the freestyle events, we did win enough points to outclass Hillsborough by a wide margin. Although the mighty Dragons have competed in baseball only three years, they have carved a name for themselves in this sport of sports. The first year, though we were very green, competing with well established high schools was a hard dose but we came out at the end of the year with an even break. The second year team won the majority of the games and we beat Clearwater High School four times during the season. The third year we were handicapped in that most of the first and second year men volunteered to serve our country and others to work. The only remaining lettermen with two years ex- perience were Bob Reed, Anibal Fernandez, Bill Sadler, Luciano Prida, Tony Garcia, and Mario Ippolito. As our third season closed, we held the city and coun- ty high school championship. In the deciding game, the Dragons trounced Hillsborough 18-5. This game was pitched by Anibal Fernandez and Bob Reed. Bill Sadler and Fernandez poled out a three-bagger each. XE S ix w g :.,, V. NA , Yu! s..
