DEDICATION: TO MR. WILLIAM WIRT BROCK, JR. The most parodied figure at Thomas Jefferson High School, Mr. William Wirt Brock, Jr., was born June 15, 1912, here in Richmond. In his sixty-three years, Mr. Brock has shown a great dedication to the education of youth. Much of his work has been done here in the state. Our principal earned his B.S. degree and was graduated with honors from Virginia Polytechnic Insti- tute in 1934. Twelve years later, he earned his M.A. degree from the Univer- sity of Virginia. In the interim of his earning these degrees, he taught at John Marshall High School 119361, served five years' active duty with the United States Army in World War II, and then returned to John Marshall in 1946 as Assistant Prin- cipal and Senior Counselor. He put his military genius to work as Comman- dant of John MarshaII's Cadet Corps. 1951 marked the end of his association with John Marshall. It was in this year that Mr. Brock was transferred to Albert H. Hill Junior High School. Finally, in 1958, Mr. Brock came as Principal to Thomas Jefferson. In his years as chief administrator, Mr. Brock has been extremely active in school-related matters. In addition to serving on various advisory commit- tees, he has attended a Health, Education, and Welfare seminar in Italy and The Netherlands in 1961, taken a course in the Humanities on a John Hay Fellowship in 1964, and attended an educational conference in Hawaii in 1967. He further studied independently at U. Va., VCU, VSC, and VUU. Education has not been the only facet of Mr. Brock's life. Until 1968, he was active in the United States Army Reserve, from which he retired as a briga- dier general. He served as president of the Torch Club, was chairman of the Central YMCA, and was a member of the West End Kiwanis Club. Addition- ally, he has been and continues to be active in a variety of church and civic activities. He enioys a warm family life with his wife, the former Lida Stokes, his two children, William W. Ill, and Angier Brock Caudle, and two grand- sons, all of whom reside in Richmond. It is to this devoted leader that the 1976 MONTICELLO is dedicated. As his reign as Thomas Jefferson's principal comes to an end, those who have known him during his tenure here will realize the loss of one of the schooI's most inspirational personalities.
