The times were changing, and TJ. was changing with them. Students were dependent upon the cheeses in order to get to school. This mobilization created a diversified student body, coming from :ill parts of the city, able to learn about other cultures and to intermingle with different types of people. The constant impact of this experience of the cheeses and of its accom- panying mixture of cultures, has produced the theme of this yearbook III sr'- ---'I M 1- ' 4 Q ,.Ib.- lg. 4 ILL I . With its usual enthusiasm, the administration led Thomasjefferson through a productive year. Always ready to lend ti listening ear, Mr. Brock found himself busy with students, with faculty, with the city school administration, and with the community at large. Mrs. Diamond worked on improving the school's present and future curriculum and planned assembly programs. Mr. Edwards and Mr. Norment performed their necessary, though often time consuming and sometimes routine, duties. The spectrum of the calls for their attention ranged from watching the buses roll in or proctoring the cafeteria to conferring with students who had problems, The administration was able to pull the loose ends of many varied types and methods of learning into a great year. Mrs. Walter's tasks sometimes included making deposits for school organizations and typing Mt. Brock's correspondence. Throughout the year, Mrs. Swift maintained a constantly-updated list of potential graduates and prepared the college-bound seniors' transcripts, Quite often the secretaries could be seen working long after students had left, trying to complete another day's work, Seeing that the daily attendance sheet was typed and distributed filled Mrs. Miller's time, Mrs. Garber fielded many of the incoming calls while Mrs, Riggan balanced voucher books and wrote checks. An integrated program of literature, composition, and language usage was built around a theme of particular interest to students. Paperbacks were used as the basic textbooks for these thematic units. Some students were allowed to select a unit of speech and drama in place of the regular English class. Successful evalution of the projects was expected to bc used to decide on extension of the program to many more students next year. The varied curriculum attested to the fact that the students had different interests and backgrounds. From A.P, American ,Studies to 9B History, the department tried to make history alive through field trips, speakers, and periodicals Problem Solving Is Aim of Math Department In addition to teaching students the basics of algebra and mathematics in the new twtryear Algebra I course and the 9B Math interdisciplinary course, the Mathematics Department still prepared students for college, Such offerings as Calculus, College Algebraffrig, and Trig Analysis satisfied the need of this second group of students. The mathematics leaming center had no full time staff . This lack was partially offset, however, by Mr. Constanoble, a volunteer aide, who still offered his invaluable help. Showing the continued excellence of the Math Department, students gained first place in a regional math conference at Virginia Commonwealth University. Entries were also placed in the Virginia State Mathematics and Science Teachers regional competition. MRS. E. DAVIS B.S. After deliberation in Spring, 1974, the Class Council chose Mrs. K, P. Hancock to be the new Class Sponsor and Mr. D, L. Pendergrast to be Class Advisor, In Summer, 1974, the elected officers, advisors, and countilmen met in session and organized committees to take care of traditional Senior functions. The Senior Showdown Committee formulated plans to hold the affair in March, by November, the Senior Prom Committee had completed most of the plans for the Senior Prom to be held in May. Many Seniors looked to 1974-1975 as the final step before going into vocations and into college. Various courses at Thomas jefferson prepared many students for a harder college education. It is probable that many Seniors will look back at their day of graduation injune, 1975, as one of their most joyful days. FRANK LEONARD SAMUEL ARMSTEAD, JR. C ACTIVITIES House and Senate Emphasize The House of Representatives was re-enacted this year by Senate decree for the purpose of obtaining more student involvement in school affairs. To create interest and stimulate positive thinking on the part of all students, each Action Group chose its representative to the House. Each House member was charged with the responsibility of becoming an active facilitator of twoaway communication between the students in his Action Group and the Senate. The major project that the House of Representatives sponsored was an opinion poll. During Action Group meetings questions dealing with continuing the P.A. soap operas and having buses to away basketball games, for instance, were asked. Every student was given the opportunity to express his yes or no opinion. These polls proved extremely popular. Senate holds daily meeting with Mike Elkin in rharge. The Student Participation Association placed the most emphasis on student participation in school activities. In November, the Senate sponsored a Homecoming Dance. Buses to and from ball games to boost school spirit and a tea for the teachers between semesters were also arranged. In addition to sponsoring activities, the S.P.A. actively supported programs of orit-ming new students, the school steering committee, the Senior Corps of Helpers, and the PTSA. During the Spring, the major Senate project was revision of the Student Handbook. Throughout the year the Senate cooperated with many community activities. As a result of a questionnaire on drugs, Senate was able to aid CODAC, a drug abuse prevention organization, with information, opinions and ideas to help the drug problem. These projects, along with others, helped the S.P.A. reach its objectives for the year. Student Participation HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. There were many highlights even though the record would not indicate it. The Viking offensive machine averaged 308 yards per game. Top efforts of the year were Charles Butler's 211 yards rushing against Kennedy, Reggie Gi-ay's 169 yards passing against George Wythe, and Gary Falden's great defensive play of being in on 18 tackles a game. Falden and many other unclerclassmen should make the team much stronger in 1975. Training right along with the boys each day, Deborah Snaggs, Sharon Rickman, and Susan Wallace enjoyed much success in their new sport. Because of the lack of local high school cross country competition for girls, these Viking pioneers competed with the Richmond Track and Field Club Women's Team against other women's teams throughout the East. Setting records almost weekly in races from 2 to 10 miles, the trio very quickly gained State, Regional, and National respect. Indoor Trackmen Star on Boards Viking Indoor Trackmen enjoyed another successful season, winning numerous honors and qualifying nine athletes for the State Championships. Leading the team were East Coast Invitational 600-yard champ Dave Clatterbuck and Regional Indoor 1000-yard champ Robert Logan. Sprint stars Marcus and Robert Carroway and Loujones ranked among the bcst in the area once again, andjuniors Dave Benson and Victor Williams joined this group to keep the Vikings winning in the 880 and mile relays. In the field events, State hurdle qualifier Stanley Carroway showed versatility as thc team's top long jumper and shot putter while Brent Evans ranked with the area's best in the triple jump.
