Facing a suicidal schedule composed of the State's best teams, the season was high- lighted by a hard-fought victory over Woodbridge, a brilliant 75 yard run by N. Rappaport against Irvington, and H. Clark's outstanding line play. Among the stars of Coach Frank Kirkleski's squad were: . DiLeo, W. Polewski, J. Sola, and R. Van Orden. Mr. Robert Cox was Assistant Coach and Mr. Fred Wiebesiek was Faculty Manager. A. Rugani was Student Manager. Jefferson All American Football Team INCE many of Jefferson's former football men are now in Uncle Sam's Armed Forces, Coach Frank Kirkleski has selected Jeffer- son All-American Squad, with all of whom he corresponds, though undoubtedly there are others. KEEP 'EM FLYING! 72 Basketball Team HAT Coach Robert Cox has put out another strong basketball team for this year is evidenced by the team's early-season wins over Asbury Park llast year's State championsl and Garfield lan- other State powerhousel. Our small though speedy team looked for- ward to continued success in the County Tournament by winning the first round against Roselle, beating Regional in quarter finals and conquering Linden in the semiffinals. In the finals they lost to Rah- way. Out of the tournament they garnered a beautiful trophy pic- tured on this page. The team was paced by J. O'Donnell, N. Rappa- port and J, Supak. Coach Herman Kaufman was in charge of the Junior Varsity. The team's student manager was N. Levensong the faculty manager was Mr, Fred Wiebesiek. L l . h Q j---v Cross Country Team HIS year again Coach John Tomlinson gave to Jefferson a Cross- Country team to rival the great ones of past years. After placing second in the County meet, the team reached its peak in earning a tie for second place in the State Championship. Outstanding run- ners were M. Cherrichello, A. Shardien, l.. Bryant and W. Ryan. Joe Poda was the Varsity manager, Soccer Team ED by George Skarecki, chosen captain of the All-State Soccer team, Jefferson once again proved a tough competitor. Coach James Nash's charges, after a slow start, went well after midseason C. and defeated some of the State's best teams. They reached their peak in a l2-2 defeat of Pingry, a traditional rival. A. Fonseca, A. Diaz, R. Curran and W. Petusky were the stars of the team. G. Chait was senior manager. , . ., l - .l.,. Table Tennis Club HIS club, organized by Mr. Alger Davis three years ago and who acts as its adviser, has had a record of continuous victories in its matches with other schools' teams without a single defeat. lt fur- nishes athletic competition for boys not represented in major sports. All efforts tend towards developing sportsmanship in their meets. Henry Marshat is Captain. His two books, a volume of American History and the latest edition of O. U. Killer's blood curdlers, were thrown on the hall table. After peeling off his reversible and unbutton- ing his flaming scarlet sweater, little Joe bounced into the living room. Dad, dad! he shouted, guess what? Mayor Allen Kaufman, when he spoke at our school assembly this morning, said that the Class of i942 was one of the best ever and l remember that that was the year you graduated. Gee, ain't you proud? Big Joe, Sr. looked up from his evening paper's sport section, casually extracted his pipe from his mouth, glanced at his still pretty wife, who used to be Betty Battin, and answered thoughtfully: Hmm, l wonder who was in that class anyway. Say, Joe, would you mind going upstairs and bring me my TEE-JAY? You know, it was our l942 Yearbook and just about the best that old school has to its and, let's see, Oh yes, Doc Warsley's credit. Say, l wonder if he's still putting them out for Jefferson. He was always resign- ing from it after each one. Well, hurry up, Joe, and bring it down! Five minutes later, the musty, battered and oft-handled annual was opened out on Big Joe's lap. On each side of him sat his family, Betty and Little Joe. The calendar on the wall indicated MAY I967. Well, began Big Joe, as he began looking at his classmates pictured in alphabetical order, let's see: here's Otto Altenburg, well, he's still running the Piano House on East Jersey. And Russ Bayne still takes a great interest in his clothes. Say, Joie, didn't you buy that sweater in the Esquire Fashion Center on Broad Street? Rus is general manager there. As he continued turning the pages, in some spots tears welled in Big Joe's eyes, when he saw faces long unheard of. He skipped over them. Then, he easily recognized Ed Bronner as the playright and producer. But only Big Joe knew that Russ vom Lehn was Bronner's angel, Little Joe called out when he saw Tom Lee, San Berman and Walter Sutter. All airminded boys knew of the designers of the 750 m.p.h. air transport. Betty recognizef' Larry Connolly and sighed, as all women did who saw this matinee idol. 80 Big Joe laughed as he turned the page: Ha, ha! Lanky Lou Teitelbaum and Duppy Carl Dreyer! Ha, hal They remind me of Abbott and Costello! Who're Abbott and Costello, Dad? asked Little Joe. Oh, some fellows we used to laugh at when I went to school-the way you kids laugh at Lou and Carl. Say, l think their newest picture is at the Ritz. Big Joe picked up the Elizabeth Daily News , published by Cecil and Austin Hersh and turned to the movie section where Bill Lambert's four star review of the flicker and Sherman Weltchek's, Dave Nelson's and Walt Kroemmelbein's action shots from it made up Big Joe's mind to see it. Little Joe remembered Charles Apostolas from the calendar in his room, advertising his Car Washing Emporium . They now put the book down at six o'clock to hear Uncle Elmer Hanf tell his nephews and nieces where to find their birthday gifts. Betty then kept the radio on for fifteen minutes of crooning by Leo Fisher. They left for the movies at seven o'clock and walked to it. The Jeff family said, Hellol to Jack Schleck and his wife, to Tony Spirito, too, who had just published his book on How to Divide! When Joe bought the tickets, he spied Dan Hourihan making eyes at the cashier. Playboy Dan had married a working wife and made hay while she ran a Bingo emporium. After the main feature, the news came on the screen. Big Joe saw many of his class- mates flash on the screen. There was Lidon who had just coached his North- southern basketball squad to their tenth straight national invitational title. Joe Di Leo was the commentator. Chet Czujak was shown training for his fifth defense of his heavy-weight title and Cliff Gregory in an adjoining camp doing the same, Cliff was welter-weight champion. After coming out of the Ritz, the Jeff family stepped into Gus Stavros's new Highway Club to have a little snack and saw Carl Serafin, crack column- ist of the Elizabeth Daily News making his usual rounds of the town's haunts. Finally, as they left to go home, rain began to fall and Big Joe had to invest in a taxi ride home. lt wasn't until they reached home that they found out that Marv Sandor had driven them home. As they marched upstairs, they met their landlord, Art Kornhauser, who greeted them affably. WeIl, said Big Joe, as they entered their smug apartment, there you are: you've met some of my 1942 classmates, ranging from mayor, to movie stars, to newspapermen and taxi drivers. Now, good-night, Joie, l must go to bed now because l've got to get up early and open my newspaper stand at Broad and East Jersey. Sleep tight! Sl J X f Glam f 7 i r ' D f jj' j . ll X REEN and weak in the knees we arrived at East Scott Place in September of l939. Jefferson was a new experience to all of us. We,-all big fellows in our respective Junior High Schools,-found ourselves deflated and relegated to looking for bakelite sandwiches and the mythical elevator. Some of us made new friends and some of us made new enemies. During our first month, we saw our first football game and Jefferson played its first game of the season against Edison Vocational, our inter-city rival. We beat them,-decisively, but the rest of the teams on our schedule weren't so easy. Our final record during that 1939 season was two wins, seven losses and one draw. At about this time we sat spellbound as pearl-diver Con Williams spieled his adventures in one of our best auditorium programs. And we gasped at the amazing number of grandmothers who had died in the families of the upper-classmen. We, of course, didn't know about the World's Baseball Series. We stifled laughs when the mike decided to talk back to Doc Warsley during our auditorium pep meetings. Some of us were a little angry when Harold Friedlander argued against co-education: but it was his assignment for a forum discussion, and we suspect he didn't really mean it. That was the year our amazing cross-country squad won the County and State championships and placed in the National's. In October, we entered the social whirl in a big way. Apples and cider disappeared as we enjoyed our first barn dance. Our first Christmas Pageant awed us rightfully. Detention was popping up occasionally. In January, Dan Hourihan was elected to the sophomore presidency in one of the closest races ever: Vincent Corsentino was chosen vice-president. ln April, we grew tired of our School Band's cry, On to Albany! How- ever, we were glad and proud when they placed first in the national competi- tion. Baseball was dropped as a major sport. We enjoyed our first field day with Battin. And we finished our first year delirious. 82 Came l94O, and suntanned and rarin' to go, we came back to tell in- coming sophs that the pool was on the seventh floor. Every morning two Battinites came to Jefferson to take a first period French lesson in Room lO2 and Jeffmen had a taste of co-education. At this time Bob Walsh startled us with his up in the air haircut. Red Corsentino was elected to the junior class presidency and Victor Gualano to the vice-presidency. When Wendell L. Willkie spoke from our new City Hall's steps, school suspended class sessions for two hours and what a time we had! The Dance Club be- came the only co-ed club in the school. Mr. Bob Cox was appointed our new cage coach and did a fine job. He piloted us to the County's semi- finals. Bill Lambert was named to the chief editorship of the Monticello Times for the following year. To finish up this year's activities, Mr. Harold Vogt and Miss Catherine Close announced their engagement. Then in l94l, we came back feeling fine and just like we did in the ninth grade. Dan Hourihan was elected to the J.S.O. presidency and Vin Corsentino to the senior skippership. Doc Warsley scrapped his Activity Booklets and introduced a new idea in his Identification Discount Student Tickets allowing for discounts for tickets to most of our school sports and activities. Just about every student bought one and approximately l,5OO were sold. This year, we also found out, that baseball was coming back among the ranks of major sports at Jefferson with Mr. Kaufman as the mentor. But this year, our football team had another off season. ln November our J.S.O. and Student Council were really going to town. Roy Fricke was named to the all-State Band as a basoon player and George Skarecki was named all-State soccer captain. Detention was now a regular pastime,- and that's where we learned to catch up on our sleep. Our greatest basket- ball team since l93l beat Asbury Park but lost to our local rivals,-St. Patrick's. We did advance to the County finals but in the final test lost but not before bringing home a beautiful trophy. This was written in March of i942 and hence we are looking forward to, in the few remaining 'weeks left us at Jefferson, our baseball team, robins, prom, the distribution of this TEE-JAY Yearbook which has all the earmarks of being another real corking number, and finally that objective of our stay at Jefferson-Graduation!
